  1. Getting rid of the 8th reliever and having 4 outfielders for 3 spots isn't really an untenable situation. Especially when Almora can get plenty of run as a defensive replacement and is a guaranteed start against LHP. They can also just ride Happ's hot streak and if he hits a cold spell just ship him back to Iowa. Or someone else needs a DL stint or just gets a multi-day knock. Or they make an early trade and one or both of Almora and Happ are gone. In other words, we don't need to apply permanence to a situation that is 100% guaranteed not to have it. 20 days ago we all would've laughed at the suggestion that we'd be having a conversation about how to make room for Happ, in another 20 days he might be hitting .190 or Heyward might have bonitis or Almora might be in the American League.
  2. having Duensing try to go 2 innings seems like begging for a save situation, why not get Johnson an inning before he goes back down?
  3. College hitters who bash the bejeezus out of the ball always have my attention.
  4. Jay if you could limit the babip regression to one out at a time, that would be great
  5. perhaps the first time an umpire has ever called out Votto looking
  6. Same, I started cackling at Bryant hitting another one to make it 12-0 so I flipped the game on the TV just to see him line out. Not cool, gameday.
  7. DAILY CUBS TRIVIA Did you know? Kris Bryant is really good at baseball
  8. He had a rough road trip, 3 for 19, 1 2B, 4/1 K/BB. I'd prefer him out there to Candelario but he's probably got to hit his way back into the lineup against RHP.
  9. I won't go so far to say that's the *right* expectation, but Happ's is a unique situation. Adjusted for level he has 800+ PA as a pro that don't put him as ready for anything above replacement level in MLB. A month of hitting HR in a hitter-friendly league doesn't wipe that away, although like I said in the first sentence, replacement level is probably regressing a bit hard.
  10. That's not terribly surprising, ZiPS is going to put heavy emphasis on his .733 OPS in AA.
  11. maybe the nicest thing you've ever said about a white player
  12. Lackey very curious if the ball is still in the vines, doesn't want any surprises when he does his late night rabbit hunting
  13. Baez didn't get to face Arroyo last time, have to think he'll probably throw out his back swinging so hard and then Happ can stay until Zobrist/Jay are healthy or longer. Joe's playing the long game.
  14. the odds of Lackey giving Happ the 'why did you open the gate' look tonight are at least 80%
  15. Maybe today is the day I subscribe to the Athletic
  16. I don't know what I expected.
  17. his most recent tweet before that dustup: [tweet] [/tweet] What in the world is Schwarber doing as a talking point, is this the 'how dare you let this person endanger himself by playing the OF' nonsense again?
