  1. That's a medical opinion that you're not competent to give. If you have a definitve authority that you can cite as a source, you should do so. Given these circumatances, offering an opinion in such authoritative terms is the height of arrogance. I'm sorry, but I don't think the claim that stopping 10-15 pitches short of his average doesn't hurt is that outrageous a claim.
  2. 86th pick- Byron Leftwich, QB, Jacksonville
  3. Yes and finish 20 under .500 and watch Furcal, Giles and Wagner go elsewhere. You really think September is going to make or break a FA's decision on the quality of the franchise? The Cubs are in a big city, big market, with good talent, and recent success.
  4. I think if a GM spends $8MM on a position player and get under .350 OBP or under .750 OPS, he's a fool. I'd rather spend $8MM+ on a left fielder who can post an .850+ OPS. I really don't think a .340 OBP or .746 OPS is rare enough to spend big bucks and call it an upgrade. Supply and Demand. Position scarcity matters.
  5. I don't want CUBS management being paranoid about anything. Paranoia is a mental illness that requires treatment. Letting Carlos get in the usual innings (pitches) in for the day that he has gotten used to every start IS a positive result. It could be argued that every time he winds up and throws a pitch he risks blowing his arm out forever. I stand by my original statement..... you are overestimating the level of risk here. Pitching is an unnatural motion. No harm was going to come to Carlos by stopping at 89 pitches, but it's possible that it could going beyond that. Given the massive lead, it was unnecessary.
  6. Furcal's OPS is practically meaningless. Any leadoff hitter's is. I'd take a .600 OPS from my leadoff guy if it meant he was hitting .200/.400/.200, especially when you add in his ability to steal a base at a great clip. I don't buy that. A player is more valuable when he can get past first base on his own, whether it's by hitting 2B, 3B, HR, or by stealing bases. Of course, Furcal steals a lot of bases at a pretty good percentage(92/107, 86% the last 3 years), so on the whole he's probably more valuable than his OPS indicates.
  7. Giles is one of the top hitters in the league. If he wants 11/12/12, only 3 years, then I'd be hard pressed not to give it to him considering the dire straits of our outfield. EDIT: Math is good.
  8. I like to go on gut instinct, tea leaves, and wind direction. All of which say say Walker is cheap and productive. Cheap and productive are good things unless someone has changed the rules of MLB. auggiedoggie is that you? Nah...auggie would make up stats. I think the answer to why teams let Walker go can be found here. haha, remember when i made cool posts hope everyones happy will all-lowercase non-sensical ramblings instead Just as long as you don't move to Iowa.
  9. The Baseball Cube lists a couple of inactive Danville minor league teams, but on the brief alumni list, only a couple of the players listed were not born in the 1970s. The oldest 2 were born in the mid 30s.
  10. 4 years for a 27 year old is not that big a deal. It's not the same as offering 4 years to a 32 year old. 4 & 32 works for me. That what Renteria got right.. Renteria got 4/40, Cabrera got 4/32.
  11. petersons great, just don't listen if he says he can fix a pitcher and that you should definitely trade everything you have to get him. Who did he say that about? I don't remember.
  12. Lineup: CF Hairston 2B Walker 1B Lee RF Burnitz 3B Nomar LF Hollandsworth SS Cedeno C Blanco P Zambrano
  13. Damon won't be worth the contract he'll command. You might as well bring back Lawton.
  14. Hope that's sarcasm. Uh, no. Wow. So I guess the '04 White Sox were one of the best teams ever, huh? No, and the fact that they were 25th in MLB in ERA probably had a hand in that.
  15. He was brought back by the Cubs b/c in 04' the Cubs were too RH dominant offense. Needing to get some LH hitters in the mix. A goal for the Cubs is going to be get stronger defensively, IIRC they rank near the bottom of the NL in defense. According to BP, The Cubs are 5th in the NL in Defensive efficiency, 12th in MLB. That's not even close to the bottom, and certainly not worth sacrificing offense to improve. EDIT: Wow, I'm beyond late. Reading comprehension is fun.
  16. Sing's 24! Pitchers are players too!
  17. I've never really complained about his defense, it really hasn't been that bad. His Rate for the year is like 97.
  18. I was very relieved to click the link and see Paul Sullivan's name at the top.
  19. I expected more out of the NSBB community, offense-happy zealots.
  20. Shapiro is different from Hart in that he hasn't made any ridiculous deals sending away quality talent for little in return. Also, coming from a Lorain county resident(well, until this summer), I've heard that the sellout streak is, how do you say it, less than legitimate. :) The tickets were bought regardless, haha. Yeah, the Indians had more talent than they knew what to do with. I mean, Albert Belle was let walk. Same with Manny Ramirez. Thome had to be let go because of the youth movement. Ditto with Vizquel. We traded Brian Giles for Ricardo Rincon. Richie Sexson for Jason Bere. We blew out Jaret Wright's arm in '97. Russel Branyon...well, that one isn't quite a disappointment. The list goes on... My personal favorite is Jeromy Burnitz for Kevin Seitzer.

  22. Who cares how many HR and RBI he has if he's producing in ways not influenced by the team? He's slugging over .560 away from Petco, and as you mention he gets on base at an outstanding clip. He's worth it, just not for more than 3 years because of his age.
