  1. Absolute certainty? Perhaps not. But I'd say it was pretty close considering that the bat was around head level and still on its way up. He threw that with a heck of a lot more force than is requireed to flip it near the plate. That's a pretty big miscalculation. Either way, I'm fine with the penalty. 50 games (and $175,000) and 50 hours of community service is still a lot. The article actually said that he will lose $145,000 but he can donate the other $30,000 to me if he'd like.
  2. I'd trade damn near any combination of 5 players not named Murton, Cedeno, Ramirez, Lee, Barrett, Prior, Wood, Zambrano or Marshall. ANY combination. I'm pretty sure I'd throw Marshall into a deal for a stud like Cabrera. Marshall's value is at its absolute peak right now. Coming into the spring he wasn't even considered for a rotation spot. He's enjoying some not so expected success. He's shown enough this season that I wouldn't consider him in some of the deals I would have this past offseason. But you shouldn't let 2 months completely change your view of a player. If Marshall is the hangup in a Cabrera deal, and some of the other pitchers are coming around by then, I'd most likely include him. The only reason Marshall wasn't being considered for a spot in the starting rotation coming into the spring was because most of last year was spent in Daytona. He was one of the top SP's in the system last year and he's always had the skills to be this successful.
  3. I'm going to be an optimist and say over. We'll score 2 runs in the first inning today; Cedeno will get on and steal 2nd base, then Walker will pull one into the short porch in right. Guzman will K 8 in 6IP but get a ND and the Cubs will win in the 14th inning.
  4. Do you think that the Cubs are the only team with this sort of problem with top prospects? Just looking back over past drafts, 3 of the top 5 picks in the 2002 draft still haven't even played in anything above A-Ball. Usually each year the top picks are based alot on hype and signability. The draft is always filled with guys that haven't done much yet but are just waiting to bust out, while others have already reached their peak and will only get worse in the pros.
  5. I hadn't really heard was officially happened to the player yet, so I went on an internet search and it looks like it is officially ruled suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Here is an article from yesterday that talks about it briefly...rather scary article if you read all the way through it.
  6. A solid, veteran bullpen can overcome one mediocre everyday player. I realize that our offense is weak, but good pitching IMO will be more consistent and more valuable over time. Our pitching can keep us in it, our offense still has plenty of time to come around. I'd rather lose a game 2-1 because of our weak offense than lose a game 10-9 because of a powerful offense but no pitching.
  7. The 2nd batter in the 8th inning singled to break up the no-hitter. Billingsley ended up with a line of 8IP H 6/1, and maybe ironically Broxton finished this game off for Billingsley as well.
  8. For those interested in minor league news outside of the Cubs' organization, Dodgers' prospect Chad Billingsley has a no-hitter going through 7 innings tonight. He's up to 93 pitches right now so I'm not sure how much longer he'll go but it has definately been an impressive start for him tonight. A 7-pitch walk in the 5th inning is the only reason he isn't working on a perfect game right now.
  9. Iriki isn't the first player to get the 50-game suspension; several players have already received it and one has received a 100-game suspension that I'm aware of. Here is an article from awhile back mentioning some of the suspensions.
  10. I know that Burnett does have a serious injury history, but at this point I truely believe he is a hypochondriac. Every time his elbow moves he thinks it must be hurt it seems like.
  11. The Cubs are catching on to the OBP revolution? Sprowl's best asset is his ability to draw a walk. The ability to draw a walk is seems to be Sprowl's only asset. Outside of his all-star year in 2003, his minor league numbers have been horrible. He's already 26 and this is his first experience above the A-ball level. I just don't see the point in swapping someone who likely has no future at the ML level in Sprowl, for someone that has atleast a better shot at contributing in Farina. With Richie and Reyes already at C, Sprowl doesn't even really have a spot with the team. I guess he'll sit on the bench and come in every week or so and try to draw a walk.
  12. Pierre hasn't lit the world on fire, but he certainly hasn't been as awful as the crap we've had in past years. Even though his average is only .268, he is still in 3rd on the team with 19 hits (Walker and Cedeno tied for first with 20) and he has scored 13 runs so far, the most on the team. He's also 7-7 in SBA thus far, and today alone his speed was able to cause two errors where he got on base and scored both times.
  13. Well usually when I eat a peanut, I place it in my mouth and chew it for a few seconds, then swallow it. Seriosly though, I'll eat a peanut pretty much any way; dry, salt roasted, raw, with the skin...none of them affect the taste a whole lot. The best way to eat them though is to go to a Logan's Roadhouse restaurant where they've got the peanuts in the shell; you're actually expected to just throw the shells on the floor when you are done.
  14. DJaxx, do you have any insight into why this move was made? Farina is is 3 years younger and has just about the same amount of experience as Sprowl does. Farina only has 7ABs this year, so switching a backup catcher for a backup catcher doesn't make a whole lot on sense to me.
  15. Is Veal still going or is his night done? It is nice to see him with a good start, hopefully they don't push him too far though given his recent injury history.
  16. The one I'm talking about broke a window about half way up in the apartment building down the left line. It might have been in BP, but I remember him even offering to go help the guy replace the window that he broke. I don't really remember him hitting one onto the rooftop but with his power it really wouldn't surprise me either. I also remember the time the ump told the pitcher to throw the ball while Glenallen was still out of the batter's box and he still managed to hit it into RF. I wish that we still had characters like GA Hill and Julio Zuleta on the team to lighten the mood a little when things like the Lee injury happen; they may not help a whole lot but they make the team a whole lot more fun to watch.
  17. You do realize that you have been talking to a HS coach, right?
  18. As famous as Glenallen's fear of spiders is, I'll always remember him for the homerun he hit that broke the window in the apartment building down the left field line.
  19. Here is a brick already on sale at E-Bay. It is a $100 buy it now auction (not much of an auction since you can only buy it now). Seems a bit steep to me but it does include the MLB authenticated hologram deal so it might be worth it.
  20. I wouldn't say most Wal-Marts have gas stations; some do. There are two Wal-Marts within about 15 miles of my home. One of them does have a gas station; one doesn't. Neither of them have a Sam's club next door. I guess that shows how much I know about Wal-Marts. The closest one to me is 2 1/2 hours away (actually there are 2 of them there that I know about) and both have their own gas stations. Then again if I can avoid going to Wal-Mart, I do so there are probably plenty of Wal-Marts without them that I've seen and completely ignored in the past.
  21. Don't most Wal-Marts have their own gas stations now anyways? And even if they don't, there's almost always a Sam's Club right next to it that will have one. If it were me, I'd pull out a 12ga pump and chamber one round (probably the most intimidating noise to any would-be thief). Then politely tell him to get lost, and that if he tries anything funny that he'll be having lead (or steel depending on your load) for breakfast.
  22. See I doubt they would "announce" that...I think they may just quietly shop around. Perhaps Cuban gets the sense that's gonna happen and this is him getting his name out there? Or maybe Cuban is trying to create a false market and lure the Tribune into trying to sell the Cubs. Once they figure out that the market isn't as big as they thought it was, Cuban will swoop in and buy the Cubs.
  23. At this point if I'm Griffey, I have double knee replacement and take a whole year off. Then I come back much healthier and ready to play again. He'd most likely have to move to LF and take it a little easier in the field, but atleast this way he'd probably make it through an entire season.
  24. MiLB's box score is stuck at a 2-2 tie with Serrano still at bat. I guess that spares me of the anger and frustration, although I still know what is going on I can choose not to believe it :)
  25. I'm following the game through the MiLB box scores so my updates are a bit slow, but the game is in the top of the 9th now and Atlee is in for the Jaxx.
