  1. Colvin is the only "important" player we've got playing in the CWS; Smith was only a 35th round selection and he's a junior. I'll bet he's going back unless we overslot him but who knows? I wasn't referring to the Cubs. The Short-A season in my town is a Cardinals affiliate. #-o Who cares about the Cards? Der "closet Cards fan" wood does, that's who. Note the bolded part. True, I also see that they are "our" short season team.

  3. To further emphasize the point of how insignificant the K total is compared to the OBP, I'd take a guy with a .400 OBP and 200K's over a guy with a .380 (just throwing a number out there) OBP and 100K's. A hitter would never be able to sustain a .400 OBP and strikeout 200 times, his BABIP would be so insanely high I'd be very surprised if it ever happened. An average player will get between 500-600AB's per year so if he's striking out 1/2-1/3 of the time he'd have to have around 200 hits a year to maintain that OBP assuming that he doesn't walk or get walked very often.
  4. Bruno, I can see where you're coming from but most of our hitters have no clue at the plate so striking out right now is just as good, if not better than, making contact. If our players went up there looking for good pitches to hit and just trying to go with them, I'd be thrilled but that isn't the case. Almost every single player on the roster swings early and often, and when they get down in the count they give up; they don't shorten their swing and try to go with the pitch. I'm sick and tired of watching our hitters give in and roll over a pitch on the outside corner which usually ends up with more negative effects than possitive effects. Also, hitting balls to the right side to more a runner over and that kind of stuff is a great mentality but you've got to get runners on base and in scoring position for that to work in most cases. Since the Cubs can't even get men on base, it is a moot point atleast for the time being.
  5. I don't think that is true; soft grounders to 2nd do nothing, and if there is a runner on first then there is usually a force out at 2nd and nothing is changed if the defense can't turn the DP. There are also shallow pop-ups and soft liners. I'm not much of a stat-head, but I'd be willing to be that as a whole our team's BABIP is very low.

  7. The $8mil is the contract value, I think that part of his advisor's trip to Chicago will be to hammer out the signing bonus and the proration of the contract.
  8. Some of Prior's injuries are totally unavoidable. He couldn't have gotten out of the way of that line drive, and the Giles collision happened so fast that it wasn't very avoidable either. The injury this time is a bit of a mystery to me, but I'm quite happy with the way he's came back. I know that the job of a starter is to start, but if you rush a starter back after an injury you're asking for nothing but trouble and more injuries. Prior's got a long career ahead of him if he's handled properly, so a few bumps and potholes down the road should be expected. Wood's problems IMO stretch back further than 2003, I think they go all the way back to his TJS. Whenever your elbow gets hurt it is a natural tendency to compensate with your shoulder so now he's having shoulder problems. I think more than anything, these are both power pitchers and power pitchers are always at the highest injury risk. Those power sliders and curves do alot of damage to the elbows, and as I mentioned above when elbows hurt most people compensate with their shoulders. If you recall Pedro was suffering from this a little while back, but his mechanics were straightened out before it caused serious damage. Maddux has been able to last so long and pitch so many innings because he always has low pitch counts, but he also doesn't through very hard either. Zambrano is a true marvel IMO, he's one of those throwback types that can seemingly through a CG everytime out and still bounce back without a problem. I don't know how he does it, but it hasn't caught up to him yet and let's hope that it doesn't anytime soon.
  9. Ok I moved Soriano and Lopez, and also dropped Wilson and picked up Ibanez as a short-term replacement in the outfield. I've looked around on some trade proposals but no one in my league is very active so I guess it might take awhile.
  10. How are they anything alike other than getting big signing bonuses? Brownlie was coming off of injuries that he never really bounced back from. Big signing bonuses that won't be lived up to. I'm not that impressed with Samardzija, he doesn't have great velocity, and he didn't have very good numbers either of the last two years. I guess I don't see why he was even a projected top 20 pick. I thought he was hitting 93-94 with his fastball and that he had a pretty good slider as well? Most college baseball players train for baseball year-round, Samardzija probably trains very little for baseball except for just before and during the season. He's got some potential and I think he's got room for improvement. I know that our system has had a problem with developing some arms recently, but I think he's got enough natural talent to overcome that to a certain extent.
  11. I think we should trade Baker, Maddux, and cash to the Braves for Bobby Cox. I think at this point he's everything we need; he's fiery and not afraid to get in a player's face, but he also supports his players and loves playing the young players.
  12. DJAXX, with all of your connections in Jackson how about starting up NSBB radio....tonight?
  13. Boo!! I say Ron comes over here and does a PBP for us!!! But in all seriousness I guess this means that we'll have to wait on delayed info from MiLB.
  14. I noticed that the Astros' pitching coach wouldn't use the cell phone, he used the hard-wired phone every time.
  15. Don't forget that comes to  0.98 WHIP. If he velocity comes back, maybe 2007 might not be a longshot. I don't think the velocity will be that big of a deal; it will be mentioned but it shouldn't affect his game too much as long as he mixes his pitches and his speeds good enough.
  16. I would agree with that if people were wanting equal value for Prior's talent, even with the injury problems. I think that is a little bit different when people are advocating cutting our loses and just salvaging a minor leaguer for him. Like a said, maybe "hate" was the wrong word, but alot of people had all but given up on him and turned their back to him.
  17. I guess instead of a Dope Slap, it was a Dope Smack. Note to Brian; please don't use your head like that all the time!
  18. I don't see that happening tonight; we've got 7 more runs to tie and no outs to work with.
  19. Well I'll be...Pierre with an RBI single into RF.
  20. Mabry has a couple of good rips and hits a flare double into LF
  21. Cedeno takes strike 3 right down the middle.
