  1. I don't think I have done that yet, so I just felt like I needed to try.
  2. I understand that, at least the baseball being a business part. What I was trying to say was, unless the company was paying annually, the new owner probably wouldn't see any of the money from the naming rights deal. For instance, if Sears signed a 4 year contract @ 10 mil per year for the stadium naming rights, that money would go to the current owner of the team. Which would increase their sale value some, sure, but when the new owner bough the team they would not directly see 40 million dollars from the deal. Therefore, it's unlikely selling the naming rights would result in any kind of change in what we see on the field. Also, the "when business is good, it's usually reflected on the field" part seems to be just plain untrue. You said it yourself two sentences later - More money doesn't mean a better team. Hell, look at us. We have one of the higher payrolls in all of baseball and we've made the playoffs three times in the past decade. Basically, you proved exactly what I was trying to say with that last sentence. I said IF selling the naming rights meant a world series title - then hell yes, sign me up. But as you and I both know, that's not the way it is. More money spent the right way means a better team. Sure the Cubs spend a lot but the guy spending it is an idiot so he doesn't spend it wisely, thats why we get pretty bad results for how much we spend.
  3. Lou also said Cubbie today...sorry if you have a problem with it, I don't think you will be successful trying to get people to stop saying it. I am indifferent on "Cubbies" so whatever, but I think that you care way too much about what people call the team. It wouldn't matter if we called them the Chicago Houjvadillas it would make ZERO difference on the play of the team, which is the thing that matters. So you don't care if they change the name of wrigley, then, right? I don't care if they change the name of Wrigley because it will put more money towards winning (as long as that also goes with getting a better GM than Jim Hendry) and no matter what they officially call it I will still always call it Wrigley Field. What they want me to call it doesn't matter to me. Fair enough, but I seriously doubt the bolded part. Unless by "winning" you mean "Sam Zell's Wallet" I would be upset if a name change did not increase the payroll, but if that's a direct result of a name change, and if we had a GM who was more responsible with the money he was given to spend, then I would be all for it. I won't call it anything but Wrigley, but if slapping a new name on the outside of the stadium (it would be nice though to keep the Wrigley sign on the outside of the stadium) allows the Cubs to spend more on getting good players then do it ASAP. A championship is worth more than a name could ever be. I'll agree with this 100%. If changing the name of wrigley means a W.S. title then, by all means, slap "American Girl Field" on that red sign out front A.S.A.P. Problem is, the money will probably go to pad Zells already-fat wallet. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but currently the tribune (Zell) owns both the cubs and wrigley. Therefore, when he sells the naming rights, the tribune (he) will get the money. Then he'll sell the team. The team will then be the responsibility of the new manager. And unless the company who buys the rights has to pay a fee yearly to keep them, I would doubt the new owner sees any of the money. It'd be like me selling you tickets to a game, then taking the money you give me for the tickets and giving it back to you so you can buy more snacks. Why would Zell do that. Granted - I could have this process all completely wrong...but I just have the suspicion that money will go to zell - not good players in the future. Unfortunately, I think your right. I doubt Zell would even consider changing the name if he wasn't getting paid for it. If there is some way though to have the stadium(name unchanged)+team sold together and then the new owner sold the naming rights to increase the payroll, I would support it. However, as it currently stands, I doubt the Cubs benefit from the name change as long as the name change happens while the team is still under Zell's control, so that would annoy me.

  5. GeoVANY Soto is a stud.

  8. Weeee ooooo weeeee ooooo weeee oooo Wait wait wait, do you hear something? Weeee ooooo weeeee ooooo weeee oooo Oh boy, it's getting closer...
  9. Yeah, if he really was a fan it's understandable...if any of us ever played MLB I'm sure if we were asked what we thought about playing for the Cubs that any of us would admit that we hoped to get a chance to do it at some point in our career.
  10. Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein put up with the Santana trade from early November to the beginning of February when Santana was finally dealt to somebody else. And the Twins didn't even have a reason to wait on the trade like the Orioles did with the Bedard trade. Plus the thing that ended that trade is Minnesota decided that they were going to stop negotiating, ask for final offers, and make the decision right then. If they hadn't decided to do that the Yankees and Red Sox might still be waiting at their door. At the same time, I will say again what I said then. Opening Day. If the trade isn't done by then, the negotiations should stop and just let the players play for at least 6 weeks. If the Cubs still need Roberts after that period, they can always revisit it. Brian Roberts is not Johan Santana. There is a big difference between getting the best pitcher in baseball and getting a guy who MIGHT be a top 5 second basemen, and is really only different from the guy we have because he is faster.
  11. I'd enjoy playing...that spot still open?
  12. I think I should do the Hudson+Soto+Griffey for Towles+Young+Buchholz I already have enough young guys, and this adds more sure things and less possible good things...I think I upgrade at catcher, get more consistent at pitcher, and sure Young could be a stud, but I think Griffey should be solid...so what do you guys think?
  13. Pujols and Braun at 10 and 11...I can't believe people are so down on Pujols...and Braun is a monster.
  14. Well he sent a counter offer of Tim Hudson+Geovany Soto+Ken Griffey for J.R. Towles+Delmon Young+Clay Buchholz So I countered with Tim Hudson+Geovany Soto for J.R. Towles+Clay Buchholz...what do you think?
  15. Should I trade Pierzynski (my final pick) and Buchholz for Kevin Gregg and Geovany Soto?

  17. A noble act for a noble cause. Whats the over under on # of pages after the trade is actually announced (if its ever announced)...my guess is that it woudl be suprisingly little...I mean...seriously, how much more can be said about Brian Roberts? They won't announce the trade, they are going to keep it secret. The trade will happen, they just won't tell anyone and Roberts will play wearing a Ronny Cedeno mask and have to answer questions explaining how he learned to bat left handed so quickly.
  18. yay I love this post by a poster at the end of the story. I hope he was joking:  Haha, that was me. Lol, nice
  19. That's why I emphasized that he wouldn't be a threat to take Pie's job. He could play maybe once a week against a tough lefty. No! the guy that backs up Pie needs to be awesome defensively as well as being able to hit because guys like that are a dime a dozen. Besides, the Cubs have a long and storied tradition of never running a guy out to CF that wasn't all that great defensively. If the guy could hit and be awesome defensively, he would be the starting CF as soon as Pie hits his first slump. I want a guy that will not be a threat to Pie's job and future. If Pie proves a flop, then go out and get a starting CF. He was kidding.
  20. That would be ideal.... Roberts Fukudome Lee Ramirez Soriano DeRosa Soto Pie Edit: Crap, I have 2 second basemen and no shortstop....Rammy is gonna need to cover a lot of ground....
