Soriano's deal was better. I apologize I should have clarified. Soriano never lived up to being paid $18 mil a year, just like Cutler looks like he is not going to live up to his contract if he keeps turning the ball over. Both were over paid, decent players, but not worth the money in the long run (though Cutler has time to make up some of it). Both teams overpaid and bid against themselves. There was no team going to give Cutler this money even if he was on the open market. That is all. Never did I compare the dollar amounts or say it was like a disaster. Yeah, he did. Depends on how you look at it. On a year by year basis solely, some years he came close, some (one?) years he provided surplus value, but overall he came up well short thanks to a couple of [expletive] seasons. Well, he averaged 3.37 WAR per season over 6.5 seasons with the Cubs. At $5 million/win, he was worth $16.85 million/year. At $5.5 million/win, he's at $18.53 million/year. That's with his sub-replacement season, and his 1 win season. Yeah, if you are fair and look at his value over the whole contract, he doesn't look as good thanks to this season, but this perception was from his play with the Cubs, not people saying that he wasn't worth it because he was awful this year with the Yankees. He was pretty much worth the contract for when he was playing with the Cubs. I don't think it's fair to say he never lived up to it.
