there's also dodger stadium and angel stadium - neither bearing a corporate name. my point is, a team like the cubs does not have to put a corporate name on the ballpark to be one of the larger-revenue teams in the game. wasn't the Angels stadium called Edison Field for a long time? 6 years from 1997-2003. I know you're speaking of SS. But I don't agree with you on CF and RF. RF for one, we have Murton. Who could have a decent year but he will not be Fukudome good. KFUKU has very good defense on top of better offense. CF you have Pie. And Pie is no guarantee to be anything. So if they do get Figgins I think it's a huge upgrade. 2B is the only one I can agree with you on. I was on Derosa's side ever since I heard of the trade. I'd like him to be our 2B. But if Roberts can put up Derosa #'s + 50 SB I'm still happy with that. So we'll have a somewhat black hole in SS (BTW, it's still much better than it has been in a few years). If we get FUKU, FIG, and ROB I think that's going to be a very good offense. Not only that, maybe we can finally get some stability in the line-up. Figgins could be a huge upgrade or a marginal one. His stats this year were great, but his OBP was fueled by his high BA. It really doesn't look like much changed except more of his hits fell in. If he settles back around a .300 average, which is likely his upgrade will look marginal for the cost. I don't believe tickets to sporting events are deductible anymore. It's no longer a business expense? When did that change? Don't remember exactly. I think they've been phasing out "entertainment" expenses for quite a while now. As I think about it, it may be that sporting events and the like are partially deductible.

Back in the days when Ernie played shortstop...... a bleacher ticket cost $1.00, and the minimum wage was $1.00/hour. So, the folks on the lower end of the economic scale had to work an hour to attend a CUBS game. Today, the same kind of folks have to work 5-6 hours to attend a CUBS game, and it continues to rise. Baseball revenues and salaries are rising at a pace that greatly exceeds the rise in the cost of living. This is not news. It cannot continue forever, but it will continue as long as it can; i.e. until baseball hits that magic point of diminishing return.

Some guy posted it on baseball-fever's message board. When I was doing my research on my thesis paper about Cobb, Speaker, and Jackson in undergrad, I had to read on microfilm a good bit of those old sports columns and they are always hilarious. "the Yankees were as comfortable as a lamplighter in a gunpowder factory".... that's beyond outstanding. I really need to find a way to discover some of these. Please...list these "facts" for me. * Offensive and defensive statistics (you can look them up). * The Cubs winning percentages with Theriot starting/Cedeno starting. All the "mathmeticians" that want to say that Theriot "sucked" in 2007 - I don't really know what to say. I am sure he will improve, and I am sure there was a reason why he started at SS most of the year. I know he was inconsistant at best offensively, and didn't play SS like Ozzie Smith. I can appreciate that the 2007 Chicago Cubs were a hell of a lot better than the 06 Cubs - and they got almost all the plays from SS because of Theriot. I watched a hell of a lot of games this season, and we definately had a better team when he was in the lineup. I love players like Theriot, and hope he is our SS/2B for as long as he plays like he did in 07. I'll bet you if you asked any member of the team they would agree with me too. The Cubs finished 65-62 with Theriot starting, and they were 20-15 when Theriot did not start. They were 8-6 when Cedeno started this season. If you want to make the winning percentage argument, you're arguing for Cedeno because his winning percentage was a lot higher than Theriot's. The Cubs scored 4.496 runs per game when Theriot started. They scored 5.17 runs per game when Theriot did not start. They scored 5.07 runs per game when Cedeno started.
