  1. Since these things should be based on performance, I voted for Oswalt because he has been very, very good. Since that is the case, he deserves it. That not withstanding, I would punch the punk in his mouth if I saw him on the street as well. Your team has some good guys on it (a la Ensberg), but Oswalt is a dirtbag.
  2. Len was saying all game yesterday that Corey would be given a couple of days off. And if ya miss Chip, you can always tune into TBS. :P
  3. It wasn't exactly his fault, but it does nothing to dispel his reputation as a glass man. I am sure glad the Cubs didn't give him that contract, as I seriously doubt it will be the last injury he suffers as a Dodger. Link
  4. Albert won't remain in the game for its' entirety. I'll bet that either Alou or Luis Gonzalez come in for him at some point.
  5. Yeah. Carlos just happened to have the hottest streak of his career on the biggest stage. He is good, but very overrated, and not nearly worth the contract he got. As for the ASG, the NL outfield should have been Abreu/Jones/Cabrera or Lee. No way does Edmonds belong in the game. In fact I could list 10 outfielder more worthy, based on this year. I have to say Eckstein deserves to be ther more than Izturis, who has gone in the tank after his hot start.
  6. Well then he would immediately become Dusty's leadoff hitter, since we all know speed is more important than the plate discipline and the ability to get on base.
  7. I couldn't agree more. I never thought Stone's knowledge of the game was any better than average. Sure he would try to predict pitches, but other than that he wasn't very indepth about his analysis. And I do think some fans want the color man to be very personal in their criticism. They want the anouncers to say what a fan might yell from the bleachers. Stoney is probably in the best place he could be now. He has weekly segments on a radio station built around sports broadcasting that has more to do with fans venting and personal insults than actuall analysis. Stoney is an entertainer more than he is a solid source of information. I agree and disagree. IMO, Stone knew as much about the nuances of the game as anyone I have ever heard. But on the other hand, I enjoy Len and Bob, and they have been clearly critical of the Cubs poor play lately. I don't think Stoney made things more personal, I just think Len and Bob's jabs are far more smooth and subtle, but noticable to those who recognize the problems. I also agree that it is a real stretch to call Len and Bob homers. Their criticisms of Bakers personnel decisions and poor play have been frequent and accurate, but as I said, just more well thought out and subtle.
  8. I agree. I want to blame somebody, and it is tempting to blame Walker, but the Cubs were smoking balls all over the park, and the pitching was adequate. It was just a combination of Brad Wilkerson and bad luck, IMO. The first two games of the series, on the other hand.......
  9. If Barrett is is pitching to Z, we're in serious trouble.
  10. Nah, I am resigned to Corey's failure. I hope he comes through, but I won't get upset if he doesn't.
  11. Probably just precautionary, as Livan is still inder 300 pitches.
  12. Plenty are worse when it comes to in-game management and personnel decisions? I don't think so. Maybe a small handful, but that's it. And that's being very generous.
  13. Eggg-xactly. No way that happens. Like going to, say, a Twins forum and seeing them post about getting Derek Lee. Mench comes up a bit on the board. May be unlikely, but Texas does need some arms. I think Andruw is almost the player who is least likely to be traded right now. If the Braves traded him, they could kiss their playoff chances goodbye, as he is the Atlanta offense at this point. Now if the Braves slump for a month, things could change.
  14. I don't rade Prior or Zambrano, unless the return is overwhelming. I love Dunn, but if it takes Z to get him, the Reds can keep him.
  15. I just look at the overall stat package. WHIP, ERA, BAA, K/BB are all indicators for me. When they are all good, it indicates that that pitcher is good. Sometimes that equates to wins, sometimes not. Sometimes you get pitchers with excellent peripherals and few wins, and other times you get pitchers with a boatload of wins and poor or average stats. IMO, if there is a consensus among most of the stats, you should consider the mismatching stats to be anomalous, even if it is the win total.
  16. Yep. While Clement's K/9 are down this year vs last, so are his walks/9. Overall his BAA, OBP allowed, and SLG allowed are comparable to last year. XZero where do you get your run support numbers from? ESPN.coms stats. It's under individual pitcher rankings, expanded II. I remember so many games Clement started and dominated, only to get one or no runs. Kerry has had the same problem. I remember getting in a argument with a Cards fan on the Cards.com site a year or two ago about Wood vs. Morris, and if you transferred Morris' run support to Kerry, he would have had 22+ wins 2 or 3 times, conservatively. If you go back and see how many games Wood and Clement started over the past few years in which they went 6+ innings allowing 3 or less runs and either lost or got a ND, it's mind boggling. Wins are so overrated, just ask Clemens this year. The fact that Johnson won 16 last year is a testament to how totally dominating he was. Or how Astros fans were talking about how Pettitte was a legit #1 because he won 20+ games...well, things arent going so well in Houston for ol' Andy without the Bronx Bombers behind him. I could go on and on about how overrated wins are, but I digress.
  17. Why is Clement winning more in Boston? Maybe it's because he is recieving an average of 7.45 runs of support a game. Last year with the Cubs, he got 4.03, and 4.20 the year before that. You are going to win alot of games when your team scores seven and a half runs a game for you.
  18. It's a total mess. The Cubs do not show any evidence of effective coaching. The don't move runners up, can't get bunts down, hit sac flies, etc. They only rarely show insight as to how to work the count (especially in critical situations), and are mediocre baserunners. There is also poor defensive decision making, i.e. Hawkins yesterday, and Hairston trying to catch the ball off to his side and at waist level the other day. Pitch selection for both the hitters and pitchers has been very questionable. There has been an overall lack of hustle as well. All of these things can be attributed to bad coaching or a total lack of it. And then you have the managerial decisons, mostly poor, which have been documented in this thread. Also the abuse of players (Fox), medical misdiagnoses, failure to address mechanical issues, and on and on and on. The whole coaching staff has to go, IMO.
  19. and amazingily enough the Cubs have scored 7 runs by the 3rd inning. Lets try to make sure that the moves are poor before we discount them I don't think you get it: statistics are never wrong - and infalliably they predict future events. I have a stat here that said Neifi was going to go 6 for 9 today. I do. No I'm not going to show it to you. It's secret. I bet $10 mil on Neifi going 6 for 9 today and now I have all the money in the world, thanks to statistics. Here's my impression of some: "Dammit - Neifi did good! The Cubs frickin won....man that sucks!' Here's my impresion of some others: "Yes, I was right today! That means all the other times I was wrong and will be wrong in the future, which will prove to greatly outnumber the time I was right, don't matter!" Well that's just baseball. You get a hit 33 times out of a hundred and you're an all-star. If you're a manager and you only make the right decision 33% of the time, you're usually out of a job. Being able to tell that Jerry Hairston is better than Neifi Perez isn't comparable to having to hit ML pitching. It's common sense.
  20. Hendry is the man. We get Nomar without giving up Clement, Pie, Guz, Brownlie or any of the untouchables. Brilliant. I am all over this BandWGN. Many doubted and spouted when the deadline passed. To them I say, enjoy your ample helpings of fresh crow.
