  1. I noticed they were climbing in the standings. Nobody's really been talking about it. Sounds like a soft spot in the schedule, but then again I think we can all say that we've seen cases where a team gains confidence by beating up on a bunch of crap teams and it carries over to some degree to the tougher parts of their schedule. I'm pretty sure the Crew are still the team that will be there with us in the end though. Cardinals seem to be showing their stripes alot more lately. I can't wrap my mind around the Stros being significantly above .500 by September. If it happens it will be chalked up as a big suprise.
  2. I think some people were in favor of bringing Lee to the North Side a couple years ago when we got Lilly. Lilly's been good, but how would a deal for Lee be looking right about now?
  3. And the fans' safety should be a concern too. Sitting behind the dugouts might be a little more dangerous now. I've seen a couple people get whacked already this year. I'm not sure if it's statistically happening more often, but I'd be interested in seeing the numbers. You can tell people to keep their eyes on the game, sure, but inevitably they're going to be chatting with their friends, buying a beer, etc.
  4. Every time I hear something about Prior I think back to 2003 when he & Woody would just mow down everyone in their path, and back then I was like :yahoo: And now when I think back to it I'm like :cray:
  5. That's what I thought. But back then people erroneously attributed his home runs to the use of maple. Later it was found to be good old fashioned roids. Kind of like how people once thought the increased home runs were due to a "juiced ball."
  6. Pie needs AB's that he will not get up here. Edmonds is very low risk mediocre reward. I hate the guy but he is better than Pie right now. Pie can come back up in September. But it's unholy. It's blasphemy.
  7. Wait a minute. Signing Edmonds? WUT? Where did this one come from? No. freaking. way.
  8. I'll bet Bochy is questioning his decision to go to SF right about now. But that's off topic.
  9. This is what Simers does. He baits an athlete until they can't handle his schtick anymore. Then he writes an awful column about it. The LA Times has the worst sports section in the country. From what I remember living in LA, the entire LA Times itself is pretty shaky. Maybe it's gotten better, but things like this make me think not. I don't even think Mariotti would chase a guy around like this and bait him with little contests and what not. It's pretty juvenile.
  10. No, that was Dusty. He doesn't want to admit he's pulled that boneheaded maneuver off twice. Well, that's what I thought. Sportscenter quoted him as saying he'd only seen that happen when he was a player. Wonder if he'll get called on that anywhere but here? I'd like to see Baker take the responsibility for once. I'm surprised the players haven't called him out when he says things like this. Remember when the Cubs were so bad at fundamentals when he was here and he kept saying his teams didn't play that way and blamed it on the Cubs players not learning it in the minor leagues? Yes. I remember lots of things like that. I also take responsibility as a fan for not accepting he was bad until after the '04 season.
  11. I laughed out loud at this little exchange:
  12. Meh personally I dont know why Lou deserves credit for this move. Melvin was the one who made the move look good by walking him. Personally I wouldve went with Cedeno, who has shown patience this year, that way if Melvin pitches to him, he has a better chance to put the ball in play. Or if he IBB's him, then you still have one of your best hitters still available, instead of being wasted to get IBB. Melvin should have pitched to Soriano and see if he would get himself out like he so often does. Lou makes a good call and he still gets critiqued. Cub fans are never happy. Just because a call works out doesn't make it a good call. If Fox struck out the first two batters he faced, it was still would have been a bad call. Fans tend to judge calls based on the results, but managers should be judged based on the situation, not how it turns out. I think that's true, but I do find it to be a bit of a double standard that comparatively few people give Lou credit for the good moves he makes, but entire threads are dedicated to the bad moves.
  13. Near the end of that article is an interesting witness report: That would certainly seem to back up Benson's side of the story.
  14. Since Marmol is excelling in his current spot, why not keep him there especially if Woody can figure out being a closer? Either/or will work for me, but I don't really get the complaints about Marmol not closing. There's nothing magical about the closer role. It's relief work, and the rally can come in any inning. It needs to be killed when it happens, whether that be the 7th, 8th, or 9th.
  15. Trust me...it's true. Remember the old donut shop? That became media relations in 2005 because there was no place to put them when they expanded another department. Now Media Relations is in a trailer in the parking lot. One very small department has people in four different areas because there is not a space to accomodate them all. It's an old ballpark and there is no more room to add office space. So if they redo the grandstand, I think the current employees might be quite happy. It was why everyone was looking forward to the triangle building on the corner of Clark and Waveland as it would have included office space. How hard would it be to rent some office space somewhere? It makes no sense that they allow the space in Wrigley to constrict them. Yeah I don't get that either.
  16. We just need a couple of these guys to find himself a bit, even if it's only for a few months of the season. We could get lucky here, by switching guys in/out of those 4 & 5 spots as they become hot/drop off. ....or, it could suck. I dunno. I liked what I saw from SG, hopefully he can continue. And hopefully Dempster continues looking like a good starter. This was a really good weekend, any way you slice it. I don't think many people thought we would do this to the DBacks. So it was awesome to see.
  17. It would appear so. The Sham Closer will get no love from the likes of BH.
  18. So you're suggesting to not have a catcher at all? :D Ronny has talents we haven't even begun to explore.
  19. I don't understand why everyone is so down on Benson. Its not like he was put into a very good situation to succeed last year. What good is cutting him when he is at worst going to be your second best RB. Exactly. NO ONE would've been able to run behind that offensive line last year. Absolutely no one. LT would've been shut down running behind those tackles and guards. People have to understand that the offensive line is the MOST important part of the football team. Want to know why Tom Brady is so good? Look at all of the time he has to throw the ball. Any QB in the NFL could be a good quarterback if they have that extra second or two to sit back and read the defense. The same goes with running backs too. Give Benson another shot next year. I really thought he was much better than Thomas Jones was in 2006 and I still think that he could be a productive back in the league. He was at least as good as TJ in '06, but last year he slowed down considerably. He just looked much slower, much less decisive. He wasn't hitting holes as quickly, wasn't running or cutting as quickly. Just slower. Maybe he can get it back, I don't know.
  20. I could go with either/or but I would really like to see Kerry grow into the closer role because it's clear that, if nothing else, Marmol is comfortable in his current role. If we don't need to move him out of that comfort zone, then so much the better.
  21. Damn you can't do that Kerry. Tying run comes up.
