  1. The Dodgers needed an upgrade, be it pitching or offense. They got that upgrade in Hanley Ramirez so it's very plausible that they no longer feel the need to upgrade their roster, at least at the cost of a prospect of significance.
  2. My concern isn't just trading Garza, it's getting top value for him. I'm sure someone will still take Garza off our hands, but will we still get elite type prospects for him after a down year and with a (slight) injury lingering? I tend to doubt it.
  3. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy at some point. Of course we won't have a chance to contend next year if we trade away our good players. We've had a major infusion of talent the past couple of years, we'll have a very high draft pick and a very large pool of draft money next year, and we have great talent evaluators in the front office. We could make a legitimate attempt at contending next season and still build for the future at the same time.
  4. The new CBA apparently killed that scenario. Now teams lose the pool of money that comes with the first round pick in signing guys who have gotten qualifying offers, meaning a team that signed Demp would have far less money to spend in the draft than they otherwise would. That likely keeps teams from signing him and keeps us from getting a pick for him. So if he declines the trade to Atlanta, our options most likely become take whatever LA offers us or have Dempster on the team next year on a 1-year deal. Neither is very appealing.
  5. There's very little value in keeping him with the new CBA.
  6. Is a team at all likely to give up a first round pick and the draft pool money that comes with it for a 36 year old pitcher? And keeping Demp so we have first dibs (or a guaranteed shot) at him in the offseason is of very little value to a team in the position the Cubs are in.
  7. Stop it. They didn't trade him last time for a [expletive] offer, I hardly think they will trade him this time for a worse than [expletive] offer. They didn't take the previous poor offer because it appeared there were other alternatives. If Demp shoots this trade down, then there are no other options for the Cubs.
  8. You're right and we're winning 70 games or less during that time. Makes complete sense. And keeping the good pitcher in his prime would help us to win more games if we choose to try to do so.
  9. I wasn't referring to the situation we're in right this moment (Demp still deciding) and if that's what raw was talking about then I misunderstood him. I was thinking in terms of if Demp does ultimately reject this trade. Then it's clear - it's the Dodgers or stay with the Cubs and we lose all leverage in the process.
  10. This may be nitpicking, but I think I'd want more from Atlanta for Garza - I'd want it to center around Teheran. And why would the Dodgers still give us Eovaldi knowing Dempster is limiting our options to them or nobody? Colletti's not very good at what he does, so I guess it's possible he won't react to this, but I'd expect the Dodgers' offer to plummet if Demp nixes this trade.
  11. You think the Dodgers would buy that we'd be happy just holding onto Dempster? With as clear as it is that we're in a full rebuild and not planning to contend at least through next season, I'd say the threat of keeping a 36 year old pitcher will fall on deaf ears. Dempster nixes this trade, the Dodgers have 100% of the leverage - no matter how good the Theo regime is at negotiating.
  12. Well that explains it. Most scouts don't think Baez is going to be playing SS when he reaches MLB. That doesn't mean he won't. No reason to give up on the hope this soon.
  13. I'd keep Baez at SS as long as possible in the offhand chance he figures out a way to stick there. And I wouldn't package Garza and Vitters together unless I was getting something ridiculous back.
  14. Him being traded allows him to seek a multi-year deal after the season (without a team having to give up a pick for him) and the Braves are reportedly his second choice on teams to be dealt to. I'd be pretty surprised if he exercised his NTC.
  15. Shut up and go to Atlanta, Ryan. Quit being a buzzkill. This would be an awful way to get our hopes up.
  16. I want a lot better than Lee for Garza. He was ok for a demp return, but he better not be the center piece for Garza. We've set the bar too high now. I agree with this. As excited as I am over the Demp/Delgado deal, I'd be pretty letdown with Lee as the centerpiece for Garza - unless there's a lot of good quantity included.
  17. We're supposedly getting something else to "offset the money." Somebody (Goldstein?) said that something else would be us sending them cash. Sounds like it's a one-for-one deal - Dempster for Delgado.
  18. This is a fantastic return. I figured the Braves would be more likely to overpay due to their higher need than LA for pitching, but I didn't really believe they'd give Teheran or Delgado. I love Theo.
  19. This is what I've been thinking. Years of control are good and I get why they're so valued, but it seems like productivity and talent are being pushed to the side more often than it seems prudent to me. Yes Demp only has half a season of control left, but he's a really good pitcher - probably the best on the market if Hamels/Greinke/Garza aren't dealt - who would help a contender greatly down the stretch. That should be worth a lot.
  20. I'm not questioning you at all since you'd know better than me, but why? All I've seen to this point is that Lee is clearly their best pitching prospect.
  21. I do consider it a big win, the statement was meant to say that maybe Theo does have some jedi mind tricks up his sleeve because he got that good a return for (admittedly very good) Sean Marshall. And Torreyes is the reason I like it so much. I'm not really fazed by his poor start to the year since it appears a ton of bad luck was involved.
  22. The Marshall/Torreyes trade makes me wonder about the jedi mind tricks thing..... In seriousness, if there's a game of chicken going on over Zach Lee, I feel better about Colletti flinching before Theo. That's my main point. Theo is patient enough to wait out Colletti and see if he gets nervous as the deadline approaches.
  23. It may be a bit optimistic, but it's at least not blind optimism with Theo doing the negotiating for us. And at this point, Dempster is probably far and away the best SP on the market (assuming Garza is out too long to be traded, Hamels really is extended, and teams have shied away from Greinke due to injury). That means if a GM like Ned Colletti gets desperate, the desperation move is made for Dempster.
  24. Yeah, I knew what you meant. Just pointing out that I'm still not sold that dealing Garza is the best move.
