  1. The fact that they haven't really looked at long-term answers leads me to believe they haven't given up on Pie completely yet. If they got a long-term guy, they'd have to give up on Felix. You could use Pie to keep the other player cost down though. Definitely. I'm not sure I've seen an outfielder I'm willing to give Pie up for, though. Definitely not DeJesus. Maybe McLouth - though would Pittsburgh give him to us without absolutely scalping us? Yeah, those Pirates have absolutely burned is in the past. What I wouldnt give to have Bobby Hill and Jose Hernandez back. Excellent point. But, the big difference there is Aramis had one great season and was crap in four other seasons with Pitt. McLouth, though, has played four seasons with the Pirates and has had two very good seasons. Plus, I'm not sure how salaries will play into it. Aramis was close to getting a very large payday. McLouth may not be that close.
  2. Offensively, there's little doubt you do this deal. But, as others have pointed out and I didn't think of, he's atrocious in the outfield and has only played left for years now. I'd still deal of him (perhaps) but I wouldn't give more than a Kevin Hart and another prospect . . . or something similar.

Pie will likely be up with the team in September as late inning defensive insurance, barring a trade. I don't think it's a must to beef up the outfield, but I'm intrigued that the Cubs are exploring opportunities to improve. Yeah, as happy as I've been with Edmonds to this point, his nagging injuries are worrying me. It's good to see Hendry and Lou thinking ahead to get insurance for a possible Edmonds collapse. And even if we don't get Ibanez, looking at 120 OPS+ hitters is always a good thing.

  6. For a 120 OPS+, I'd give a couple of decent minor leaguers. Ibanez would force Edmonds to the bench and give us a heck of a pinch hitter. I'm not convinced Edmonds will stay healthy all year. I agree with you...Even if Ibanez isn't playing real well this year the fact that we could get another left handed center fielder in case of a Edmonds injury. Ibanez is most definitely not a CF. He can barely play the corners. Kosuke would move to center and Ibanez would stand in right. So then why not get Adam Dunn? Based on everyone wanting Ibanez and no one wanting Dunn, their costs might be pretty close, their defence (or lack thereof) is pretty close, but Dunn is loads better on offense. I'd definitely prefer Dunn, but I figured his cost would be much, much more. For similar prices, though, I'd take Dunn every day.

He can barely play the corners. Kosuke would move to center and Ibanez would stand in right. Exactly. So why not keep the OF the way it is? Soriano in LF, Reed/Edmonds in center, and Kosuke/DeRo in RF. Above average defensive team. Soriano in LF, Kosuke/Reed in CF, and Ibanez/Kosuke in RF? Not near as pretty. My fear is that Edmonds is unlikely to remain healthy and Ibanez may come cheaply. But, I'm not for the move if Ibanez can't play right so it's a moot point anyway.
  8. Good point on where he'll play, I hadn't realized he's never really played much right field. If he came really cheap (i.e. Ibanez for Hart and maybe a lower prospect) I might consider it. But if he can't play right, it may not be worth it.

I agree with you...Even if Ibanez isn't playing real well this year the fact that we could get another left handed center fielder in case of a Edmonds injury. He's not much worse this year than previous years. OPS+ from 2001 to 2008: 115, 122, 103, 116, 115, 125, 121, 120 What is OPS+ anyway? The exact formula is pretty confusing, I believe. One of the more knowledgable statguys on here could explain it better.

Fuku, Soriano, Edmonds, Reed, DeRo, Ward I just don't see a need for another outfielder, plus it would put Kosuke in CF. I'm ok with Kosuke in center, if he's fine with it. Adding another outfielder is a problem, though. It would help DeRo since he would pretty much not have to play the outfield anymore, but we may have to get rid of Ward too - that isn't ideal, but I'm not sure I'd hold the deal up because of that.

  13. as someone who corrects people for their grammar, you might want to avoid phrases like "might could"   Is that some kind of Louisiana thing or something? I've seen that before, though extremely infrequently. "Might could" is a very southern thing. I hear it around here all the time. I had never heard it until "The Wire." I've never seen "The Wire." I'm sorry to hear that. Figured out why I've never seen it - I don't get HBO.
  14. If Ned Colletti gets desperate for him, I've got no problem shipping him off now. I don't see how it makes us better this year, and I don't see how we're going to get anything significant enough for Eyre and Cedeno to help us in the future. It wouldn't make us better or worse this year - but if we could get Hu and, perhaps, Kuo from Colletti, it'd make us a good bit better in the future. Obviously, though, I'm banking on us being able to take advantage of Colletti's lack of intelligence. I wouldn't give the two away for nothing.

  19. Rupert Murdoch, I think.
  20. If Ned Colletti gets desperate for him, I've got no problem shipping him off now.
  21. I thought about Hu and Kuo, but figured that'd be too much for us to get. Even from Colletti, I'm not sure we'd get both of them for Cedeno and Eyre. I'd do the trade in less than a heartbeat if available, though.
  22. I would have to think any Manny to the Dodgers deal would have to include LA parting with either Kemp or Ethier. Perhaps Kemp and Hu for Manny? I heard something about a Manny for Kemp rumor. Am I the only one that thinks the Dodgers would be idiots to do that deal? If the Dodgers are willing to part with Kemp for a rental, can we sell them on Edmonds? He's tearing it up and a heck of a lot cheaper than Manny. We'll even swap young SS. Edmonds and Cedeno for Kemp and Hu. They can have Eyre too. Manny wouldn't necessarily be a rental. He's got two options I believe, plus the Dodgers have the funds to give him pretty much whatever deal he would want. Now, that doesn't mean I'd give up one of the best budding stars in the game today for him, but he wouldn't be a rental. I could see Colletti doing the deal I brought up, though. I thought Manny's demand to waive his NTC (or 10/5 rights, whatever it is) was that his options not be picked up. Though the Dodgers have the funds, are they really going to pay Manny $20m next year? They already have JP, who can't play CF, and Jones, who can't play CF. And JP's there for 3 more years. He doesn't want his options picked up, but I'd say he'd settle for a huge payday even if he doesn't hit the open market. Knowing Colletti, I could see him offering a 4/70 type deal to Manny - which likely would be enough to get him to sign. And 58 of Andruw's 59 games this season have been in center. It may not be ideal, but he can play there adequately still. I agree, I'd love to find a way to get Kemp or Ethier. I doubt Colletti understands their true value (or any prospects' value) and it'd be terrific to fleece him for one of those two. The question is, would Hendry go through with a clear and obvious fleecing? As big into fair deals as he is, I'm not sure he'd do some semblance of an Edmonds for Kemp deal.

  24. Realistically though, what the heck do we ask for in return? I'd think it would be major league players over prospects. I'd be more than a little surprised if Hu were not involved.
