  1. Cot's has Adam Dunn as a free agent after the year. He might be an option if we dealt Lee.
  2. Ah. I suck at figuring out service time. My bad.
  3. You don't consider Prince Fielder to be close to Lee's production? Or did I (and Cot's) miss an extension he signed? The Brewers control Fielder through 2011. This is not his walk year. He is slated to hit FA at the same time as Adrian Gonzalez. Cot's:
  4. You don't consider Prince Fielder to be close to Lee's production? Or did I (and Cot's) miss an extension he signed? Okay, aside from grossly overpaying in a long term contract to a similar overall player whose skillset promises to age poorly, there is no one close to Lee on the FA market. He's only 26 this year. Give him a 5-year contract that will run through his age 31 season and I don't think that's too far into his "old age" years to really bite us that hard. Money would be the question for me as I have no idea what he'll be asking (but would figure he'll be looking for $17-18 mil pretty easily).

  6. Maybe we could try Theriot as a pitcher. Theriot you can trade, eh? Theriot can fill Silva's role if we trade Silva. Theriot could be the guy who wills the offense to score and wills the team to victories when he's on the mound.
  7. Maybe we could try Theriot as a pitcher.
  8. I'm not so sure that's true. He's pitching well now. No team is going to build around Silva as an anchor to their rotation but a team in the hunt would definitely want him to fill out the back end of their rotation. Keep in mind also that a lot of GMs are old fashioned enough to like that 7-0 W-L record. Sadly, Jim Hendry is probably one of those dumb GMs and will deem him untouchable. The trade deadline would probably be a good time to start actively shopping him. I just wonder if Hendry started making a big effort to trade him now, if some GMs might get the idea that Hendry/Lou/Rothschild – the guys who "fixed" him – don't believe he'll continue to remain "fixed." You probably are right, though, that his W/L record could have some GMs very interested right now. I just feel like we could get more for him if we wait until at least the deadline to start actively shopping him.
  9. I have no real interest in trading Gorzelanny unless somebody overpays quite a bit. He's still relatively cheap and young and has been very productive as a Cub. I don't see a great benefit in trading him – barring somebody overpaying, that is. As for Silva, his value probably isn't up enough to get any kind of value for him. We might get some salary relief if we trade him now, but if we want to maximize his value (or, at least, have a chance to) we probably need to wait until the offseason and hope he performs well the remainder of the year. As for Lilly, if he'll waive his no-trade rights, I wouldn't be opposed to trading him.
  10. Does the 100 IP total include fall league innings? If so, I understand. If not, I don't see why you can't add the 2009 regular season pitching with the 2009 fall league pitching. It does not. So in actuality Cashner threw about 115-120 IP last year. The point is that since he threw in the AFL last year, then throwing in the AFL isn't going to push Cashner into uncharted territory so he can build endurance. Ok, now I get what you're saying. My point was that his threshold for number of innings should be higher than the 100-120 you've cited since he made it to 120 last year (with AFL included) and likely will be close to the 120ish number again this year after (I assume) the AFL. So while you're right that the threshold for innings pitched won't be any higher after this year, he should be able to reach as many as 140-150 innings next year. Right? It's probably just nitpicking, but I felt like the numbers being thrown around were too low.

  12. I honestly didn't think they'd get more than a PTBNL for him.
  13. The Crew had some kind of indication. I'm not sure what it was, but they knew something. Whatever happened, the Cubs failed to see McGehee's potential. And it does hurt, especially now. Did the Cubs have any indication that Randy Wells could perform like a top of the line starter? Or did the Twins envision Johan Santana as one of the best starting pitchers of his generation? The Brewers likely saw a guy who could make the 25 man roster and contribute to some degree. A 25th man, as was mentioned earlier. Them choosing him in the Rule 5 draft doesn't mean they saw him as a .900+ OPS guy or even necessarily a starter. There's a really good chance the Cubs and Brewers saw the same thing - a potential semi-productive role/bench player. It's just the Brewers had room for that guy all year and the Cubs did not.
  14. If Lou goes by what he said yesterday, he's planning on working Cashner into the 7th-8th inning after a little while. And why does fall league pitching not count in your total? Cashner threw in the fall league last year, so that's not going to help him build innings relative to 2009. Are fall league innings different in the fall than pitches during the summer? I'm honestly confused about this – has he not pitched in the fall league since 2008 or why can the fall league innings not count toward his 2009 total if he did pitch in the fall league in 2009?

  16. Yeah, you two are probably right. I was just thinking he'd be a better alternative to Hoffpauir, perhaps, and would get a boost from facing only righties. Trading Lee would definitely be a selling move, though.
  17. I'd kill for some mid 700's OPS out of third base this year. I see your point. If he was still a Cub, McGehee would be OPSing about .500 right now, though.
  18. I wonder if Colvin could play 1st? A Nady/Colvin platoon, perhaps?
  19. He has a career .741 OPS in the minors and he's a third baseman. There was very little indication he'd turn into the productive player he's been.
  20. According to Fangraphs, he's never thrown mid-90s heat consistently. He's hovered much of his ML career in the 89-90 range and has dropped to 88 (2008-2009) and 87 (2010) since. I think he was helped early in his career because of his quirky delivery. He's actually not been that bad this year, it appears, as he has a 4.64 FIP – much more in line with his career than the past couple of seasons.
  21. Kinda like what the Cubs did with Castro?
  22. I probably wouldn't complain if Ricketts gave Rothschild a lifetime contract.
  23. Since they put him in the bullpen anyway, I think this is a good move. Get him up to the majors and see if he can contribute. If not, he likely goes back to starting in AAA.
  24. When was the last time the Cubs did that? How often are players traded for and then traded away? Mark DeRosa is certainly an answer though. Todd Walker and Michael Barrett?
