No he wasn't signed to be the closer, but Dusty didn't hesitate to pull the trigger when JoBo went down. Dempster proved himself worthy of another season as the full-time closer w/o thinking of pulling him for Eyre (or Howry) .. unless Dempster implodes, which I don't forsee happening.

Because unlike when they signed Remmy and Hawkins, this time there is no "serious" talk of Eyre or Howry (if signed) to be their closer. They are signed (or will be?) to be relievers or set-up men - and God-willing - that will be their job all year. I realize that Eyre has a bonus pending if he becomes the closer, but as long as Dempster maintains his form of 2005, there is no reason for that bonus to kick-in.

Could everyone please use some kind of prefix for when posting speculation or trying to start a discussion? Abreu a Cub? leads me to believe I'm going to see a link or a snippit of a rumor or something that leads me to believe a deal is close. Those kind of subjects should read: DISCUSS: Abreu in RF? .. or something similar. Also threads that say "RUMOR: (PLAYER) to the Cubs??" should not be started if it's the poster's rumor and no one else's, especially if you're just looking for discussion. Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of healthy discussion, but don't post mis-leading Subject lines, please.

They haven't been. In fact, the signing of Eyre hasn't been reported yet. It was a report on WSCR that said the Cubs could sign Eyre by the end of the day. The report apparently mentioned nothing about terms, check me if I'm wrong. That is what we know, and, more importantly, what we don't know. The rest is, well... Most frustrating of all is they have been "reporting" that a deal could be done tonight. However on one specific update, they said "a deal could be reached as soon as tonight.. then again, it could take awhile. #-o

I'd imagine they would still press on with Furcal, because JH wants speed at the top of the order. It might help in their negotiations, however, thus bringing Furcal's price down to something more affordable for them.
