  1. Sure it takes a decade to actual results, but after the 1st 5 years, you'll see progression from the minor leaguers as the 1st and 2nd year guys will likely be at or near knocking on the door of the majors rather than how well they are doing at the majors.
  2. Yes the tallest midget, especially when there will be likely little to spend in the off-season and bigger issues (the OF) that need to addressed. If they had money to spend like last year and C was the primary weakness, I wouldn't mind them going after a different C. Yes, MLB is tougher than the minors. Often, the progression of a hitter as he matures and reaches his prime as well as improved coaching will counteract the improvement of talent he faces. Unless there is a significant hole in his swing or a slow bat, the hitter (if he has the tools) will make the adjustments to become an asset. I believe Soto has the bat speed, approach, and raw power to become an asset in the line-up especially for minimal salary and it is worth finding out if he can.
  3. I've always thought that Soriano and Ramirez were worthy of a FB to the ribs as well for their pose.
  4. agree. I thought most people here believe in the "reverting back to your career stats" theory. If he went back to his career minor league stats, he'd still be the best avail. options of the 3 they have now, much cheaper, and more likely to improve compared to 2 catchers on the downswing of their careers.
  5. There's no problem with skeptical of any prospect unless that becomes a reason to not see if he can make it over a likely inferior player. At this point, I think Soto would outproduce Kendall and Blanco if given the chance to play everyday. I hope he gets chance to prove me right or wrong.
  6. Based on... The need to be opposite or the past failures of Cedeno & Dubois? He has the ability to hit for a fair avg., double digit HRs, 20+ DBs, and BBs. His might start his career like that, who knows? I think he'll do better if given the chance, he has the bat speed, raw power, and approach to exceed your "guess". Of course, those are similar #s as Blanco would put up at a fraction of the cost.
  7. Need a minimum of 5 years to make any kind of accurate judgement.
  8. UK is up 42-20, despite being outgained 421 to 345. Poor game despite the score.
  9. UK 14 Kent St. 14 Kent St. should be up more but they can't hold onto the ball. They dominated this game for the most especially on each line.
  10. UK takes advantage of a Kent St. turnover and drives down for the TD. 14-7 Cats
  11. UK ties it up at 7-7. Woodson will soon get the chance against UL to show he's one of the top 5 QBs in the nation.
  12. UK down 7-0 to Kent St. after a fake FG on the 1st drive of the game.
  13. Well now at least the 2nd half will be interesting. That's a hell of an arm, he should be a pitcher. :)
  14. He does look like an interesting option, especially as a platoon player. My original suggestion was to convince Soriano to play RF and bat 5th for the good of the team. That way Murton or a Murton platoon would be more than adequate in LF. Either way, I don't see them having the money to get a key FA or the prospects to trade for a proven ML'er of high quality.
  15. If I'm Hendry and knowing I have a minimal budget for next year, I'm looking for someone cheap or a hidden gem for RF. I'd consider someone like Seth Smith of the Rockies, who doesn't have a spot with Hawpe and Holliday on the corners and platoon him with Murton. I don't like Murton in RF, but his bat, makes him a cheap and likely productive RF'er against LH'ers.
  16. Blanco is adequate for 40 starts, he's not going to hit, he gave the Cubs more in the past offensively than he's likely capable of in the future. I want him on the Cubs to help mold Soto into a ML starting C. I'm ready for them to stick Pie and Soto out there everyday next year.
  17. It's worthy of a FB to the ribs, IMO.
  18. That doesn't mean that Barrett and Kendall went from good to bad b/c of them, just bad to worse.
  19. I agree...if they can get those numbers at his cheap price that would be nice. It's almost like (good) Barrett at a decent price. His arm didn't impress me though. How is this defense on balls in the dirt? He's agile for a C and he has enough arm strength. It's hard to tell how good his arm is with these pitchers, even a young Pudge would have trouble preventing runners from stealing.
  20. It was an amazing jump in numbers, his numbers before '07 were .262/.344/.371 w/25HRs in 1574 ABs. This year .353/.424/.652 w/26HRs in 385 ABs. He changed his approach somewhat and it's his 3rd time thru Iowa, so it's hard to say what caused it. But, if they can get .260-280/.330-.350/.380-.420 or better from him, take it. He's not as good defensively as Blanco but much better than we've seen Kendall, so they would be wise to use him as the primary C from here on out, since Kendall seems to be slumping over the past 2 weeks.
  21. How many catchers are above avg. hitters? If you wait for that, you'll be spending a ton in FA, trading a large % of your farm, or still waiting. If he does well defensively, can hit in the .260-.280 range with some pop with a good eye at the plate, he'll be fine there and better than what they've had since the 93' season w/Wilkins and before that Davis.
  22. Yes, it's like a free trial offer, so you can try it before getting stuck with paying for it. (j/k)
  23. Agree. The logical thing would be to get rid of Dempster next year, bring in a reliable set up guy and make Marmol and his 1.45 ERA and high strike out ratio the closer. But who's going to take Dempster and the $5.3 million contract Hendry signed him to? Jake - Can we go to the Pirates well one more time please? Demster would be a good compliment to the highly paid Matt Morris. And replace him with who? Overspend again on more middle relief? I trust Dempster more at this stage than Wood and Wuertz. Dempster is not a problem on this team compared to needing fresh bodies in RF, CF, SS (unless they upgrade around Theriot) and C long-term.
  24. Dempster has prob. been an avg. closer during his tenure as closer. Of course, if Marmol was closer and Dempster was a set-up guy this year, similar W-L totals would be there over the course of the season, just more games lost in the 7th than the 9th. Unless you reduce his role to that of someone like Wuertz, swapping someone like him and Marmol isn't going to amount to much improvement.
  25. We'll see what they do. If they're smart, they'll go for Logan White. If not, another retread.
