  1. Uk is doing what most teams can't, stick close to LSU.
  2. Every hitter guesses, it's just a matter guessing right and unlike the Cubs against AZ, not swinging at pitches that they guessed wrong on.
  3. Dusty is def. a better fit for the Yankees rather than the Reds. Hopefully Bruce gets off to a hot start for them.
  4. There's quite a diff. between Clark and Justice as far as style of hitters. Esepcially Colvin's inability to draw BBs, I find it odd to compare him to Will Clark, although they're both LH'ed. :)
  5. Derosa should be an ideal #7 hitter for this team. Theriot should be an ideal utility player for them.
  6. I don't think it would be as much as a disaster as some of you are making it out to be. For one, Steve Stone criticizes alot of the big contracts Hendry gives out. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know 4 players = $80 of a years salary = bad. But it would be an improvement over Hendry. He has no experience, he's never been in any front office capacity.
  7. Jones isn't the type of player you block someone with the ceiling of Pie for. Pie has done everything he can at AAA, but him at the btm of the order and find out. To trade Pie and keep Jones without any prospects in the near future in CF doesn't make sense. I got nothing against Jones, except that I think Pie will develop into a better ballplayer, already better defensively and cheaper. This Cubs team isn't a WS contender with Jones in CF and without sign. upgrades at SS and RF, which is why I'd rather see Pie and his higher ceiling over Jones.
  8. If I was the Cubs and knowing their strengths and weaknesses, I would look at Keppinger of the Reds. Everyone knows what Cincy needs, it happens to be one thing the Cubs have more than enough of. Look into it, he's a great #2 type hitter, never overwhelmed me defenisvely like Theriot, but has a better bat than Theriot. If they don't have the money or the resources to get Tejada/Renetria, Keppinger would be at the top of my list. I believe Cincy will go with Alex Gonzalez as their starting SS and they have 2 more years of that bad contract remaining.
  9. He's a better player than Jones and would upgrade RF, Church is only a stop-gap in CF. His OPS+ over the last 3 years has been 119, while Jones is at 98. That's a pretty substantial diff., while it's not a signifcant improvement which the Cubs need, combine with a SS, and it becomes suffice.
  10. When did Jacque become a good defensive CF'er? From watching him out there, below avg. arm, avg. range, and poor instincts is what I saw from him defensively. From Pie, you'll get one of the best defensive CF'ers in the game, prob. 2nd best to Taveras in Colorado. Obviously, we don't know about Pie's bat. He hasn't had a stretch where he looks comfortable with how the pitchers are working him and he hasn't the squared up the ball enough.
  11. That's the prob. when someone who's familiarity with game extends mostly from WGN and then have the power to make extremely important baseball decisions. Stone doesn't know about player development, contract negotiations, putting together a solid staff around him, etc. If that would be one of the 1st moves by this gentleman, without knowing potential purse strings, having Stone as GM would cont. the futility.
  12. Don't worry bout it then. I prefer drunk pics. :drunken:
  13. Look at how he got along with much of the brass of the Marlins, imagine what him and Steinbrenner would end like.
  14. I can only hope Rosenthal is wrong. I'd like to see what Bruce Miles has to say about this. J <>< baiting Miles....
  15. I'm more curious to see if he'll change mechanically.
  16. http://ussmariner.com/2007/10/09/the-seeds-of-success/
  17. The future of stats is in play by data, that would answer what you're looking for.
  18. Ignoring numbers speaks volumes as well. In context, I'm sure Byrnes was speaking of the post-season prediction from baseball prospectus which had them being swept. I'd like to think I know stats pretty well as well as advanced metric stats, despite the fact I prefer numbers that are calculated via eyesight rather than box scores. Until people get their heads out of their ____ about it being one or the other, they'll never realize they work better together than by themselves.
  19. They have to find out, unless every positional prospect is on the Soto development track of 3 years at Iowa before becoming an everyday starter.
  20. Hopefully, he'd have a good relationship with the city in regards to upgrading Wrigley. Being a landmark, everything has to go thru them 1st as far as major changes.
  21. Sabermetrics just gives a more detailed and more accurate description of what happened as far as productivity. Hell, if you know how to look at OPS and each component of it (OBP and SLG) and account for park factors, that's more than enough. As far as pitching... WHIP, HR/9, BB, K ratios, IP, and runs allowed are not complicated stats that when combined, give enough non sabr-stats to paint that picture. Of course these stats tell you what has happened and not why it happened, which I'm more concerned with.
  22. He struggled this year compared to last year, everything depends on his sinker for getting outs. It'll prob. be diff. for him to be drafted, being an undersized crafty RH'er.
