  1. I still think there's a very real chance that both the Cubs and Brewers make the playoffs -- perhaps the single likeliest combination is the Cubs, Brewers, Mets and Dodgers. The NL East and West are stronger divisions, all in all, than the NL Central, and the intra-division remaining schedule will probably reward the Cubs and Brewers, while hurting the Padres, D-Backs, and Braves.
  2. Amazing. Yet again, Christina Kahrl thought about a deal in negative terms. Who'd'a thunk it?
  3. So about that SLG% below 425 thing... It's clear diamond dude has no idea as to what he's talking about and hates Murt cuz he's white. Remeber his silly idea that the only reason people like him is beecause he's white and has red hair. No, I hate that people over inflate his value because appearance is something they're comfortable with. Do not make generalizations such as this one ever again. They are inappropriate and against the board's guidelines. This post, as well as the assumption that people like Murton because he is white, are way out of line. You are entitled to your opinion regarding Murton, and I encourage healthy debate about him, RF, and how to improve the Cubs. But you are not entitled to make racist generalizations about other posters.
  4. I could see Greg Olsen starting by opening day too, if not at some point in the season. That would also, likely, be an improvement, despite Clark's nice year last year. Not in the blocking dept. Clark should start. Olsen should get significant time though. I'd really like to see is a formation with Berrian and Bradley on the outside. Olsen in the slot. Hester and Wolfe as split backs. Get Olsen on a nickel back, probably a good 5 inches shorter. Get 2 fast RBs on LBs or safeties. Nice. Very nice.

The proper place for a debate about Theriot's status as a "natural SS" is in this thread. In Baseball Discussions. Not scattered across repeated threads throughout several different forums. Please keep discussions as topical as possible, and do not continue debates in new/different threads. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Please take the Theriot/Natural SS argument back to its original thread. That's a fine debate to have, and I encourage everyone to participate and offer their opinion. However, repeating arguments from controversial threads in a completely thread is trolling, and it is not acceptable. Nor will it be accepted. Continuing this trend will result in warnings, suspensions and bans.
  7. The knock on Braun has never been his hitting; it's always been his defense. For his entire minor league career, Braun's been knocking the crap out of the ball (he did struggle a bit in High A in 2006, but that was after mowing through Rookie and Low A in 2005). Braun will cool off a bit as pitchers adjust to him, but his hitting prowess and power isn't a fluke.
  8. Wouldn't you? :)
  9. Okay, fine, I'll take a non-run scoring double play.
  10. Uh, triple play, please.
  11. Why is it that the Cubs seemingly always have a ton of games against the Reds at the beginning of the year when they aren't terrible?
  12. Give Adu a couple of years at Benfica and he'll really be something. Can't wait 'til Jozy heads over to Europe.
  13. I have friends on here. Well, keep posting. Maybe you'll have some scoops on some upcoming trades. Do not start this again.
  14. stay hot, fontenot And Jones, and Theriot, and Ramirez. And snap out of it, Soriano, Kendall. Soriano's really been struggling of late. We need another one of his hot hit streaks.
  15. His disappointment in natural. You don't get the majors without that kind of desire and heart. Any player worth his salt who gets the call is going to want to stay up there. I think his future is in the rotation, so in a way, I'm glad that he's disappointed. I think it means he'll work hard in AAA to make it back -- only this time as a starter, rather than the 11th or 12th man in bullpen.
  16. How exactly do you go about replacing Hill? He's a top 20-40 starter in the game under team control for the forseeable future. Wow, that is a bold statement. I think that that this is wildly untrue but I would be happy to listen to you prove it. THe jury's still out on Hill. He has yet to demonstrate that he can pitch consistently year over year. No stamina. If trading Hill is all it will take to get Salty, get Salty. You're right about the jury still being out; but the jury is considering whether Salty is enough return for Hill. Pitching is the most valuable commodity in baseball, and Hill's posted phenomenal numbers since he came back last year. What more does he need to do to prove his value to his detractors? He has a 1.14 WHIP, a 3.58 ERA and his K/9 is 8.01 (and to boot he's 14th in MLB in WHIP and his 105 K's places him 23rd in MLB). His numbers are better than Zambrano's in pretty much every category except W's and GS. It seems each and every time he has any struggle he becomes 'one-pitch Rich' and everyone jumps on him. We should be glad to have Hill. The trio of Zambrano, Lilly and Hill are among the best 1-3's in baseball. But I guess Rich's lack of wins means that he isn't man enough to stand among the best pitchers in baseball. Instead we should relegate him to the bullpen or AAA.
  17. He still might be, actually. On the other hand, who wants to take that risk? Depending on the cost in players, I'd take it. Theriot + Petrick.
  18. Well, he's not a relief pitcher, so I definitely don't think the Reds will want him. I don't know about Minny. judging by some of the players they've employed or been low on, i don't think they'd really appreciate his skillset. On the other hand, he's cheap talent which probably would fit into their plans. Somehow Jacque Jones comes to mind.

  20. Well, he's not a relief pitcher, so I definitely don't think the Reds will want him. I don't know about Minny.
  21. A fair point -- and it's not just recently that the Cubs have had problems developing position players. It's a long-standing problem. Personally, I'd go after Hunter and Griffey and use Murton as bait in at least one of those deals.
  22. Yes, the extra win is helpful, but you have to consider the future, too. If you can simultaneously develop Murton, Cedeno/Theriot, and Pie AND make the playoffs, that nicely sets you up for 2008. In the case of the CF, Pie might not be quite ready. In that case, an upgrade to a rental like Lofton might make sense.
  23. That's the problem. They may just be "marginal" upgrades but when you're around 89-90 runs each win brings your chances of making the playoffs up so much. All wins aren't created equally. Wins between 88 and 92 are the most valuable in baseball, economically and on the field wise. You misunderstand me; I'm not arguing with you. I'm saying that unless you are going to get someone -- like Glaus in your example -- our internal options are pretty much all better than what's available on the market. Pie is likely an upgrade over Jones/Pagan. Murton is an upgrade over Floyd. Cedeno/Theriot is an upgrade over the mess that was the first 60% of the season. Now, there are players out there who are even greater upgrades than our internal options. For example, Griffey or Dunn in RF. Torii Hunter in CF. For those not willing to go too far outside the box, I think Minnesota knows they are falling out the race, and I think Hunter might be available. His EqA is .289 right now; likewise, Rowand is lighting the world on fire with a .312 EqA. Dunn is at .295 and Griffey is at .311.
