  1. Yes, but we can level the playing field by throwing in the towel against the Astros... :D
  2. Egads I hope not. I've got Patterson & Livan in my fantasy rotation for the championship this week against abuck. Maybe that's the reason Dusty likes Neifi and Macias so much - he has them on his fantasy squad as well. Yes, his HACKING MASS team.
  3. Here we have Baker discussing his lineups again. Can anyone tell me when Baker has said we don't need to play the veterans now? Can anyone show me where he's said it's a good idea to see what we have with some rookies? Right.
  4. This probably belongs in the fantasy forum, but I think a reasonable argument could be made that Nomar, Corey and Kerry were the biggest busts for the Cubs this season regardless of fantasy output.
  5. I agree. That injury could have happened to anyone. It was a fluke. It didn't happen because Nomar is fragile. He just slipped. No amount of conditioning can avoid freak injuries like that. The injury caused the slip, the slip did not cause the injury. The injury was caused in part by Nomar being susceptible to "freak" injuries. He's going to be an enormous risk next year. If he comes back, you have to have Ronny available to back him up. You can't afford another $2.5m .300 OBP in the lineup. I'm not sure that's case. It looked very much like his cleat didn't hold in the ground, and without that support, the abnormal strain on his leg led to the tear -- a basic overextension. I could be wrong; I'm not a doctor, but that's what it looked like to me. Cedeno needs to be on this team, one way or another. If we don't sign Nomar or Furcal, Cedeno needs to start at SS, NOT 2B. Walker and Cedeno up the middle would be tremendously cost-effective.
  6. I'd like to see Nomar come back next season. I like his attitude, I like his professionalism, and I think he'll be motivated. I also think his injury was a pretty freak occurance. It's rare that someone loses their footing like he did.
  7. "Well, we sit Barrett -- even though he's healthy -- along with Murton and Nomar and we play Patterson, Blanco, Hairston and Macias!" Hairston - LF Perez - SS Lee - 1B Burnitz - RF Walker - 2B Macias - 3B Patterson - CF Blanco - C
  8. How in the world do you get that Neifi is a "middle of the pack" SS? Granted, many of the NL SS are rather pathetic but nonetheless, Neifi's stellar .302 OBP isn't in the middle of the pack. He does have a .390 SLG, which isn't terrible for the position, I'll grant. Neifi's problem is that he doesn't take pitches and doesn't take walks. He's an undisciplined slap hitter with absolutely no patience who's managed to ground into 21 DP, which is bad enough for 7th most GIDP in all of baseball.
  9. Me too. Me three.
  10. Yet another reason not to want Pierre...
  11. I do like Dempster, all in all. But I still HATE Baker. Tough choice for Yost.
  12. That's inexcusable. Simply unbelievable. I hate Baker. HATE.
  13. yep he's a cub bullpen guy I hate when we walk guys. I hate when we have no plate discipline and let wild, crappy pitchers off the hook. My wife says I'm cranky today.
  14. Bwahahahaha!! That was really quite funny.
  15. Third place is important.
  16. Coin toss. It's not like Cedeno's a 5 tool prospect, and Neifi hasn't been horrible this year. He's been a middle of the pack SS. Neifi has been horrible. And, personally, I think it's quite a little bit more than a coin toss. Neifi was extremely bad for us. His OBP, on an OBP-challenged team, was a .301. .301!! And, get this, he now has a career .301 OBP. We knew about what Neifi was going to give us -- a .301 OBP and about a .380 SLG (his career norms, including time in Colorado)! Cedeno could hardly have done worse than that. And, given his numbers in AAA, he was likely would have done a lot better than that. In 80 AB, he gave us a .356 OBP and a .375 SLG. That's a substantial upgrade, and you get the chance to evaluate him for 2006. This is what the Cubs should have done. Moreover, you probably could have traded Neifi to the Nationals, who were desperate for any kind of "upgrade" to Christian Guzman, and gotten something for one of the five worst players in MLB.
  17. I agree that you don't roll over and let everyone beat you. However, as an organization, your goal is to win a World Series and you owe it to your fans and the organization as a whole to keep that in mind. If you are out of contention for a particular year then you need to begin re-tooling for the next year. And a part of that re-tooling is to see if a young guy is going to make it. This time of year is a good time to evaluate them. Otherwise, when do you do it? Seriously, that's an important question. We might have known that Dubois wasn't going to make had he received more time last season. We'd have a better idea what Cedeno and Murton will give us next season -- if only they'd had more time to play. Dusty has said (paraphrased) at various times throughout his Cubs tenure: 1. We're trying to win now. We're here to win games and championships, not develop players, so I can't play rookies. 2. We owe it to guys who've been on the roster, like Neifi Perez, to play them. 3. We owe it to Philadelphia and Florida to start our best guys since they are in a pennant race. So, Dusty, when do we evaluate our youth?
  18. I'm curious if anyone here thinks that Neifi was a better option than Ronny Cedeno. 'Cause that would be a fun debate.
  19. The Choi/Karros/Simon analysis Tim did is quite illuminating, and if I have time later today, I'll link it. For the sake of fair analysis, let's just look at the Cubs and their players. We don't know that much about the San Francisco system and the prospects they provided during the time Baker was there. However, we know a lot about Dusty's habits with respect to Cubs prospects. We can debate, at length, whether Hill, Choi, Dubois, Kelton, or Harris were ever going to make it as everyday MLB players. However, with the look that we've had at Cedeno and Murton, it's pretty hard to justify keeping them out of the lineup for Neifi Perez and Todd Hollandsworth.
  20. Nobody living in Alaska is smarter than me. I mean, they live in Alaska. Come on. Three words: Fort Wayne, Indiana.
  21. This is a loaded question. It is entirely possible that Baker's erratic usage patterns and luke warm confidence have stiffled the growth of some players at his disposal. It is impossible to know for sure, but I can't imagine any skill being cultivated by not getting to practice your craft with regularity. I think Patterson is worth a crap. He has regressed since Baker has come on board. I think Dubois' minor league numbers warranted more patience and a more significant demonstration of confidence by his manager. The same can be said for Choi. While they may not be stars, they aren't complete bums. How about the asinine usage of Hill and Harris when they were brought up over the last couple of years when their minor league numbers warranted playing time? Say what you want, but Bobby Hill has value as a bench player. He has sported OBPs of .353 and .343 over the last two years as a bench player. I find value in those numbers that Baker never did. I will conclude with just 4 paragraphs this time. I don't think a single sentence constitutes a paragraph, JC. Stop trying to pad your post. Sheesh.
  22. well, duh. what other explanation would there be? Dusty's actuallly been batting for Murton all this time. He stole TLR's hologram device. Duh!!
  23. Maybe not, but I bet that you could sorely tempt Bowden with some combination of Patterson, Cedeno, Mitre and Leicester. The Nats sorely need an upgrade at SS. Vinny Castilla and Christian Guzman have been awful for them, and Cedeno would be a powerful chip to them. In addition, Patterson's tools would attract Bowden and his defense would be very valuable to them. They have Sledge coming back from injury, and they are interesting in keeping Guillen and/or Wilson. In the pitching department, Mitre would do very well in RFK, and the defense of Cedeno and Vidro would be very solid up the middle. They could use more pitching since they have little starting depth beyond Loiaza, Hernandez and Patterson. In addition, I look for the Nats to try and upgrade 3B via trade or FA (Harris would be better than Castilla right now) if possible. We know Hendry covets Wilkerson. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Hendry acquired him. All in all, it's a lot more likely than the Reds trading Dunn to the Cubs.
  24. Why not both of them? I'd love to have Wilkerson and Dunn on the Cubs, and I refuse to choose between them!! (Though if forced, I'd pick Dunn.)
