  1. "Not great" is being kind. Bryant has been an expensive black hole of a roster spot. Of course few would have predicted just how little production he would provide going forward. Bryant scared me because of his propensity to be derailed by minor injuries, but I didn't see it getting this bad. The problem with the Bryant/Rizzo/Baez trades is that they weren't made earlier.
  2. Barring Caissie becoming a superstar I'll always be salty about the Darvish trade. It's pretty easily my least favorite Cubs deal in recent memory.
  3. At this point it's hard to believe there is any chance Bregman is getting 6 or 7 years unless he takes a massive hit on the AAV. If he is still holding out for 6 or 7 at 25+ per, he's going to be in for a long wait. I don't think he is going to do much better than Alonso did.
  4. Well Swanson was younger and coming off his best season (and getting better year over year) when the Cubs signed him. And he has a much better defensive skillset. Bregman has been declining, and isn't going to offer much I the way of defensive value as his bat abandons him. I'd be all about giving him 2-3 years (with options), but I don't think Jed would go beyond Bellinger type deal, especially if the team is really confident in Shaw. Of course I think the rumors of the Cubs interest are largely exaggerated to drum up demand, and if I had to bet, I'd put my money on him going back to Houston. Unless Toronto is so desperate to actually land a name player that they do something foolish.
  5. Not at all a defense of PTR, but Nightengale being wrong wouldn't exactly be precedent setting
  6. Overall, but a little inconsistent in recent years. I might be wrong, but I believe I read that ~35 of his career homers wouldn't have been homers anywhere else. At the very least, his home park has propped up his power numbers. But the most pressing issue for me is that his overall offensive numbers have been in decline. wOBA down each of the last three years, and last year was probably his worst full season. His 4.1 fWAR was propped up by uncharacteristically good defensive numbers. Defensively, his range isn't great and his arm is poor. As he ages (he'll be 31 at the start of the season) he may have to come off of 3B. All that said, I'd be happy to give him like 3/90, but I'd have zero interest in him at his rumored asking price. With our miserly ownership, he's just not a player I'd want to see a bunch of payroll tied up in for more and than a few years. I can see him being just a guy in pretty short order. But I don't think it matters, Jed's not going there regardless.
  7. Well, he's certainly not getting what he is looking for (200+ million, allegedly). What I was implying is that if he wants to get a big contract, it's probably not gonna be this offseason. He's a 30 year old player in decline who is leaving a park that has been a boon to his numbers. There's a reason he hasn't been signed yet.
  8. I don't think it's unreasonable, being that his market isn't exactly hot. That said, if he were to accept a one deal deal to build his value, I don't think the Cubs would be the best choice; I would expect his numbers would get worse in Wrigley than they were last year, and they are already on the decline. And even if the Cubs weren't being miserly, I would be leery of giving Bregman a long term deal. Maybe 3-4 years at most, which is what I'd suspect he'll have to settle for.
  9. I remember a couple of those those pretty clearly, as I was in AIT in the Army and we had just gotten TV privileges and I coerced my way into watching bits of that Mets series, including the walkoffs. First live TV I'd seen in months, and pretty much every cable carrier had WGN. As I recall the second broke a window across waveland.
  10. I don't give a crap about the steroids, honestly, and I think the handwringing over the steroid era is so much manufactured outrage and melodrama. I mean it was essentially the soup of the day in a litany of competitive advantages players have sought over the years (especially as it wasn't explicitly against the rules for most of that era). It was just more flashy and obvious than most. Many will disagree, but I just can't conjure an f- to give about the roids; much of the league was on that train and most of them sucked anyway. And I feel like the league was complicit in the whole affair until it became inconvenient. It barely diminishes my enjoyment of that period of time. Now Sammy was absolutely an ass in many ways, being a diva and arguably (well, maybe inarguably) disrespectful of his teammates, and I think that's what he should apologize for. Not to the fans or media, but to his teammates. And as much as I detest Tom Ricketts, the real villain in the Sosa fiasco (other than Sammy himself) was MacPhail. But I'll be glad to have him back, as for better or worse he was/is a big part of Cubs history.
  11. It's a good one, but I'm partial to the El Paso Chihuahuas logo/hat. Really, so many great logos in MiLB. I would spend a lot (more) money on hats if my wife wouldn't kick my ass
  12. Favorite right now has to be Imanaga, for his personality as much as his performance. But the rest of the team is pretty uninspiring. Favorite all time (that I've watched in play live) has to be Sammy Sosa. Yeah, there's the obvious issues there, but there hasn't been a player who was more exciting to watch for me in my life as a Cubs fan (going back to the early 80s) and the controversy around him just can't offset that for me. He was must see TV in a period of otherwise really tepid Cubs baseball. I was a huge Sandberg fan as a kid, but as good as he was, he wasn't as consistently exciting, and his personality is about as plain vanilla as it comes.
  13. If only Hawk were still calling games this season would be peak, and I mean peak schadenfreude. It would be borderline orgasmic. As it stands, it's merely fun.
  14. Rizzo/KB/Baez have all pretty much taken the realistic worst case scenario career routes I imagined leading up to their trades. I didn't think they all would go so south (or so quickly), but it is everything I feared might happen if they were re-signed. And honestly, I thought Rizzo would be the first to fall all the way off, but he was the last. There may be some hope for Bryant, but that's just a depressing situation. All that said, I hope some role in the organization can be found for Rizzo somewhere down the road, though it obviously wouldn't be as an regular player at this point.
  15. If anyone wants to see a really bad send, check out the Marlins' send just a moment ago with a runner on third, no outs, down one in the bottom of the 12th. Woof.
  16. Yeah, it was a likely out, but I think a 2 out hit with RISP is less likely than the throw being a little offline or something. I probably make that send as well. Out of desperation given the putrescence of the offense, purely.
  17. Vlad is years removed from being a difference maker, and I feel like people are are dazzled by the name but aren't fully aware of what he is as a player currently. He isn't going to be worth what he will cost as essentially a rental and I personally wouldn't have any real interest in re-signing him to a long term deal. He's not bad by any stretch, but he's been more decent than great over his career to this point. So I hope the Cubs don't trade for him, even if they are even still interested.
  18. Yeah, I don't really have issue with any of what Craig does, but that one instantly bothered me. I'd much rather have Wisdom and his walkoff potential there. Even if he strikes out, I'll take that over a Madrigal grounder with runners on first and second. Hell, Wisdom is probably more likely to beat out a gidp chance than Nicky as well.
  19. He got too aggressive rounding third and got hung up. I suppose you could pin that on Harris, lol
  20. Yeah, again especially on De La Cruz's arm. I'm not sure even PCA makes it there. An inexplicably bad send.
  21. I think he knew he wouldn't be able to do anything with it even if he did
