  1. Players should not be allowed to do that. Ichiro started that, I hate it. Are you trying to be offensive, or just don't know any better?
  2. I'm in agreement here. I don't see what's laughable about the article. The Cubs clearly should add a big bat, but if they didn't, the in-house youth options are available and the team would be about an 85 win team. I don't see anything wrong with the article as written, if you look at it as a current snap-shot. But the Cubs definitely should pursue another bat.
  3. 2009 is when things get real ugly. 7 players will get $90M, and these are all guys who are currently at their career peaks and can only get worse or more fragile as time goes by. It's going to cost well over $100M just to put a complete team in the dugout. This is an era when slow fat unversatile bench players like Daryle Ward are deemed a bargain at $1.2M, so we'll need a pretty hefty payroll increase to actually contend. Thank you Jim Hendry. :wall: I wouldn't overreact just yet. Guys like A-Rod and Drew are opting out of contracts nobody would have ever thought they would opt out on. Even just two years ago people never would have thought A-Rod would leave $25 million the table. Granted those two are young enough still to have done so, but with the rate the game is tracking, 2 offseasons from now is long ways away and it's possible the 2009 team salary is around $135 million.
  4. I disagree. Hendry has a history of naming his target and pursuing him to the finish. He has occasionally worked out surprise deals, but by nature he is a target and aggressively pursue GM, and often the target is made public.
  5. The Cubs are going to need an upgrade somewhere. Yes you can gamble on some youth, and you should. But not in RF. If I'm settling for potential sub-par production somewhere, I want it up the middle of the field. Pie in CF, or Theriot at SS. RF is really the prime spot for an upgrade this offseason. Trade Murton and get good value in return, as he is a solid commodity for the Cubs.
  6. I think it is a $16 million option. Do you think the Yanks will pick it up? Left-handed, OBP-minded Abreu is a fit for the Cubs in RF, but where would you place him in your list of off-season options?
  7. Not a fan of Gallagher? I doubt that's it. Fans are always crying that the Cubs don't sell high. Here is an opportunity to sell high on some extra pieces, so I'm guessing that is where he is coming from (at least, that is where I'm coming from with the same sentiment).
  8. I'm actually waiting for the first time Dusty asks Dunn to lay down the sac bunt.
  9. Did you consult Dr. Evil when drafting this seriously over-complicated scenario? How about you simply sign A-Rod be done?
  10. The D-backs suck.
  11. The Cubs have the advantage. Cubs starting pitching in games 2-4 is better than the D-backs. Cubs offense needs to put up only about 12 runs to win next three games.
  12. Webb was dealing last night and luck was on his side. You can't beat a pitcher that has both going for him. The Cubs could have easily had 9 or 10 hits instead of 4, as they hammered the ball many times right into a defender's glove. That Floyd line drive to RF was one of the hardest hit balls I have ever seen. It stayed about 10 feet off the ground with almost no arc for 250 feet, but RF barely had to move.
  13. Watching this game on TBS is going to be hard. Not only is there not a HD reception on my service for TBS, but the color man for the Cubs game just tried to argue that the Diamondbacks starting rotation is deeper than the Cubs in talent...right.
  14. That might be the worse call I've seen in a very long time. I thought they brought in the best for the playoffs?
  15. Nice 25-man. I really think the Cubs have the most balanced team in the NL playoffs.
  16. I think the premise of this entire thread is flawed. For many people, including myself, the signing of DeRosa wasn't bad. I don't think DeRosa was ever a goat. There were certainly questions about the signing, and it definitely wasn't a sure thing he would replicate his 2006, but I would hardly consider his contract a goat contract. I thought he was overpaid by Hendry, but a nice addition.
  17. The worst thing is the games starting at 10 pm. Suck. My Thursday and Friday figure to be tough days.
  18. Arizona is a good match-up for the Cubs. But honestly, it doesn't matter. Love to see Cubs playoff baseball!!!
  19. Hendry drinking straight from the bottle! LOL!
  20. Oh man, and the salt in the wound is the hitters are looking quite stupid on Hoffman's stuff.
  21. It's nearly time. Nobody better throw down the Europe though, worst glamrock ever.
  22. Floyd has killed Arroyo in limited sample size.
  23. I'm looking for some uncle Cliff long balls tonight. Go Cubs!
  24. This community is so grateful to have you in the negotiation room with the Cubs GM for deals. That's a righteous job to hold. To answer the topic question; yes, Hendry probably gave up too much, but the players given up did not have a future with the big league ball club and were taking up slots on the 40-man.
  25. He could hit one of those topspin gappers he loves to hit. I'd settle for that.
