    I still maintain his double plunking of Jim Edmonds was one of the greatest moments in recent Cubs history. I couldn't stop laughing when it happened.

    They need him for the Cardinals' beer pong team. They want to take the crown that was held for so many years by the Braves, but now that Furcal is a Dodger, St. Louis can make a run at it.

    I'm pretty much convinced that Tampa is going to hold some team for ransom in exchange for Lugo come the trade deadline.

    Don't forget guys like Yusuf Carter, John Defendis, Brandon Taylor and maybe even a recovered Ryan Norwood. And guys who finished the year here in 05 and could be back for 06. And personally I think Phelps proved he is above this league, especially if he is gonna be a reliever. And Billek could easily contend for a Daytona spot in spring.... Is there something you're indirectly telling us, Nate? O:)

    Which Boise/Mesa guys were included in the Top 50 beyond obvious picks like Pawelek, Reed, and Veal? Also, the only thing I know about Valdez is that he sat out all of 2004 with some sort of injury. It would be one thing if Pawelek were recovering from an injury or surgery. However, especially considering Utah isn't exactly renowned for its warm weather, I think starting Pawelek in Peoria would not be detrimental to him as long as the Cubs keep a close on his health.

    I love how just in my time here, you've gone from Darth Vader war veterans to squirrels with lightsabers to Conan O'Brien to Bush and Bono to murderous cats to Viggo Mortensen with a guitar in your sigs and avs with no real rhyme or reason to the changes. :D I do it whenever the mood strikes me! And yes, that is Sean Bean!!!

    Yeah, most of the guys who are likely to be in Peoria next season don't inspire much in me. Some of the guys who were down in Mesa could double jump...but who knows? I can't say I know much about guys like Jesus Valdez, Carlos Quinones, or Jonathan Mota. They could either be potential stars in the making or be filler...but I honestly have no idea. Also, I'd throw Downs on that list of potential starters in the Peoria rotation.

    It pretty much all depends on what he shows in Minor League Spring Training at this point. The Cubs were extra careful with him last season in terms of having him on a strict pitch limit down in Mesa, so it is quite clear that they're going to be careful with him. However, if he rolls into ST and shows that he can take on more advanced hitters, I don't see why the Cubs won't at least give him a short stint at Peoria to start the season. By the way, that Peoria rotation has some serious potential to be really exciting this upcoming season...not to mention really lefthanded.

    He also had the good fortune of Bobby Jenks coming in and kicking tail out of the bullpen. Without Jenks, I'm not sure how well the White Sox would have done in the playoffs.

    Between this and Z losing "at least" 15 pounds, I think the rotation might be well-off this season.

    Hmmm, he's already 23 and has never shown much power or a great ability to get on base. Seems to me like a roster filler but you never know. He broke his hand back in June and missed two months, which impeded his progress within the Red Sox organization. He was 22 for all of last season and will probably start in Daytona, meaning he'll probably only be one year older than FSL average (which is around 22 I believe?). He seems fundamentally sound and apparently has decent power and speed potential. The fact that you referred to him as roster filler signifies his complete under the radar status, to boot. ;)

    That's what I always took Moneyball to be about. It wasn't necessarily that they were going after guys based on stats or patience at the plate or whatever. It was more that BB was trying to exploit the market for its weaknesses. As you mention in your post, Oakland's influence has definitely spread to other organizations. All of a sudden, guys who would be available for Oakland in the first few rounds because organizations would overlook those guys are now being taken by teams following Oakland's model (or something close to it). In other words, the market seems to have started to compensate for Oakland's exploitation. Now it's time for BB and the gang to look in other directions. We'll see how those three HS arms work out.

    After some thought, OF Matt Ciaramella (PTBNL the Cubs got from the Red Sox in the Jermaine Van Buren deal) definitely has good sleeper potential.

    He's always had 4 pitches, sinking action on his fastball(which is at a pretty solid velocity IIRC). He was at an age appropriate level and put up those solid numbers last year. I think it's a matter of both him being a solid prospect, and the system losing some talent. The knock on him is that while he has tremendous command of those pitches, he can't get people out with them for whatever reason. Otherwise, he would get a lot more hype.

    Man, Russ Rohlicek and Grant Johnson are going to be mad when they find out their identical twins are ranked higher than they are.

    There's a bit too much youth and questions about their rotation to make me think they're as much of a shoe-in to win the division as some people seem to think. They remind me a LOT of the Arizona Cardinals in terms of youth and hype they're getting. There's a ton of potential all around, especially from Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks. However, their rotation and bullpen make me wonder. Mike Maddux has been an excellent pitching coach for them, but I really don't know if their pitching is strong enough to carry them to a playoff berth yet. Sheets is terrific and Insideout-Face Turnbow both turned out well, but do they have the horses who can stay healthy, put up productive numbers, and come through when it matters? They need another ace after Sheets if they want to compete for the division. Jose Capellan is a giant question mark and Mark Rogers is too far away. I don't think any of the guys they got from the Blue Jays can step up in that way, either. If things bounce their way, I think they could make a run at the Wild Card. However, they don't have the depth to overcome slumps and injuries. They're an unknown factor, but I think their pitching needs to improve before they become a legitimate threat.
