Daytona's destroying Sarasota 10-1 as we speak. Andrew Cashner had a solid start, going 4 scoreless, striking out 1, and only allowing 3 baserunners (2 H, 1 BB). Jovan Rosa also has two doubles to his name.

The DSL Cubs got their season under way yesterday. I'm going to do some more digging on these guys, but it seems that DSL Cubs 2 is the team with the better prospects on it. The Cubs' major signings from Latin America last year are all on that team: 3B Joel Altagracia ($140,000, 17 years old), SS Carlos Henry ($110,000, 17 years old), and C Ricardo Parra (17 years old). I can't say I'm particularly familiar with anyone else on either squad, though. So, the box score listings should be a fun exercise in guessing games until things start shaking out.

Jake Fox is a future bench player. I'm happy for the guy's success at AAA and all, but frankly, it's not like the Cubs called up an uber-prospect who was destroying AAA. They called up a 26 year old 1B/OF who caught fire over two months in a VERY hitter-friendly league. I'm happy for his success and all, but, at best, I think he'll turn out to be a league average 1B. That's not a whole lot to get upset about.

There might be something to that, but if you look at most of the prolific power hitters of this era, you'll find a ton of strikeouts scattered among them. Guys like Albert Pujols and Aramis Ramirez are more the exception than the norm. There was a study done on I want to say The Hardball Times awhile ago that looked at the correlation between power hitters and strikeouts. The general finding from the study was that an increase in home run hitting tended to lead itself to an increase in strikeouts. I'll post it if I find it. I think it's difficult to compare HR hitters across eras in that way, too. Pitching and hitting have changed so much over the years.
