  1. McNutt had a quality start: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR Tennessee's down 2-0 in the 7th.
  2. In Zambrano's latest start, MLB Game Day had him working around 88-91 with his fb, topping out at 93. I find it kind of weird that people are concerned about Z's velocity considering how much flak Z used to get for overthrowing everything and not taking something off his pitches in order to get better movement. It could be that overuse finally took a toll on his arm and sapped him of some velocity...but perhaps Zambrano finally listened to his critics and altered his pitches accordingly?
  3. Nah, it'll be in 2013 when the Cubs' Chris Carpenter out-duels the Cards' Chris Carpenter to clinch the sweep. :D

  5. Box Score from the last time they did it. Crappy season, but I'm enjoying the little things.
  6. It's going to take quite a bit of work to turn this team into a regular 90 game winner (which is what they should be), but it really shouldn't take all that much investment to make them a contender in 2011. It's still the NL Central, where an 84 win pace is good enough for 2nd this year and none of the competition is elite. 80-something win seasons win this division as often as 90+ win seasons. That's pretty much the way I see this team. Turning the Cubs into consistent 90+ game winners would require young players under team control for a number of years, a top-level farm system that can fill holes on the major league roster through call ups and trades, and the available resources to sign big name free agents as they become available. Frankly, I think the Cubs would need at least two years to get to that point. However, given the current roster, I don't think it would take much to get this team over .500 next season. A good quality bat at 1B or RF, a 6th/7th inning setup man, and a #4/#5 starter (along with jettisoning Silva) would get the Cubs close to that. With bounce-back years from A-Ram and Z, continuing development of young players, and some lucky breaks, 85-88 wins wouldn't be out of the question.
  7. Callis' weekly chat.

  9. 5-0 is the final score. Smokies lead the Suns 1-0 in the series.
  10. There are worse options than Quade, imo. The way he handled the Castro situation was dumb, but whatever. Plus, as much as people talk about Ryno's loyalty to the Cubs and success in the minors, Quade's been with this organization since 2003 and has two Minor League Manager of the Year awards to his name. I think he has a better argument for managing this team than Ryno.
  11. As much as I want a high draft pick, I'm okay with the Cubs doing this.
  12. Tennessee leads 5-0 going into the bottom of the 7th. Archer with a fantastic outing (6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K), Guyer and Chirinos have HRs.
  13. In today's Ask BA, Jim Callis is asked to redo the first round of the 2007 Draft. No Cubs are listed. Ouch.
  14. Box Score Tennessee won 5-0 Box Score (Tennessee leads best of five series 1-0) CF T. Campana 1/3, R, Assist (Home) RF B. Jackson 1/3, BB, R, RBI, 2B (4), K LF B. Guyer 1/4, R, RBI, HR (1) C R. 17. You'd think Notre Dame would be good at the Hail Mary.
  18. Heyward's INT return was awesome, to boot.
  19. Joe Montana should be furious right now since it's obvious his wife cheated on him.
  20. Sounds like an ocular migraine; he's having trouble seeing out of one eye.
  21. Now that James Madison has a larger margin of victory than Boise State over common opponents, they should get BCS National Championship consideration!
  22. lol @ Virginia Tech
  23. Sweet INT by Ohio State.
