    You could hear people cheering for the Bears and Bills at various points of the game, but there wasn't anything particularly deafening.

    Rewatching the Collie hit, it seemed to me like Collie made the catch, established possession, got hit helmet to helmet, went ragdoll, and fumbled the ball. The refs called the pass incomplete, and then announced the penalty as a hit on a defenseless receiver, which I think can only be called if the receiver doesn't have the ball. Granted, there still was a helmet to helmet hit that gets called pretty much all the time and it would have negated the fumble. Still, that was a bad series of calls by the officials. Also, I think Jerry Jones is about to go on a killing spree.

    Was it me, or was Earl Bennett the best defensive back on the Olsen TD? He nearly swatted the damn ball away.

    Maybe I'm crazy but didn't castro finish 2nd in the NL in errors last year despite missing April. I'd say that's quite bad 2nd in the majors, actually. Two things worth noting: 1) All of the players in the Top 7 of that list are shortstops. Here are the 2010 UZR numbers for those players at SS... Ian Desmond: -8.8 Starlin Castro: -2.1 Cliff Pennington: 9.9 Erick Aybar: -2.0 Alcides Escobar: 3.8 Alexei Ramirez: 10.8 Josh Wilson: -2.1 I don't see much of a correlation between the two sets of numbers, good or bad. Errors some value when viewed in context with other numbers, but they are also highly subjective and should not be the sole basis on which a player should be judged defensively. 2) Starlin Castro just accumulated 500 plate appearances at the age of 20 in a season. Most players his age are either in short season A, low A, or are playing their sophomore seasons in college. You're telling me he's not going to improve? I mean, I can understand if you think he has some defensive issues that he needs to iron out, but he's not even old enough to drink. It's a little early to give up on him as a shortstop.

    MLB Batting Splits Define "filler", since 1Bs hit .264/.350/.452/.802 in MLB last season. If you think Nady will get back to his career splits of being good against LHPs, then a platoon partner who can handle RHPs pretty well could give you reasonable production from 1B. The problem with Nick Johnson is that his career splits trend more towards hitting LHPs well rather than RHPs. He hits both pretty well, but if you're bringing him in to hit RHPs, you'd be banking on him to play a lot of games. Would you want to take that chance?

    If this team is seriously thinking about Nick Johnson for 1B, I don't think there will be any big spending in the offseason.

    Apparently, it took a trade to Texas to get Bochy to play Posey regularly; Buster was a September callup last year and essentially got no playing time. He also started the year down in AAA, despite prognosticators saying he was ready (although, apparently his defense needed some fine-tuning). Plus, there was the utterly bizarre trade for Jose Guillen and subsequent playing time he got which really hurt their offense. Bochy had a weird thing for veterans. Their pitching was phenomenal, but their offense was pretty middling throughout the season and managed to catch fire at the right time.

    Assuming Lee is gone, Feliz and Holland should get moved to the rotation. The AL West should be winnable next year for the Rangers, even if their rotation takes a step back.

    I'm so incredibly jealous right now. But...if the Giants can do it with their group of castoffs and nobodies, maybe there's hope for the Cubs.

    I like this. Listach and Quade know the players in the Cubs system better than anyone. If Ricketts is going toward a "build from within mode" as he appears to be, he's got no better people then those two. Has Listach coached anybody in the Cubs sytem? He knows Soto, but who else? Of the guys on the 40 Man: Sean Marshall, Randy Wells, Justin Berg, Carlos Marmol, Jeff Samardzija, Robinson Chirinos, Koyie Hill, Micah Hoffpauir, Tyler Colvin, Sam Fuld Oddly enough, he never managed Soto.

    That's asking a lot of this team. The Bears are 3-3 under Lovie Smith in games after the bye. I'm concerned about this one.
