Changed the title of the thread to reflect the recent posts. My Pre-Draft Top 10 looks something like this... 1) Brett Jackson - Good year in spite of injuries, still a Top 30 prospect in baseball, imo. 2) Trey McNutt - Sliding due to all the nagging injuries. The talent's there, he just needs to stay healthy. 3) Matt Szczur - Rising fast. Would like to see more power, but everything else looks solid to outstanding so far. 4) Josh Vitters - Still a believer, but he's been decidedly mediocre in AA so far. 5) Jae-Hoon Ha - He held his own in a short stint in AA, but he still needs to work on taking walks. 6) Robert Whitenack - Would have been #3 on my list if he didn't have TJS. Tough break. 7) DJ LeMahieu - I'm not a huge fan of him, especially his approach, but he earned his callup. 8) Nick Struck - Quietly put up solid numbers in Daytona, curious to see how he does in AA. 9) Dallas Beeler - Seems he's recovered quite nicely from TJS; the AA promotion will be telling. 10) Micah Gibbs - Loving that 20/28 K/BB. Some power would be nice, but everything else is there for him to succeed. Woof. Some decent talent among that group, but injuries have killed this system. It desperately needs an infusion of talent from the MLB Draft.

Minor League Discussion & Boxes 6-3-11
Outshined_One replied to Outshined_One's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
Bad day for the farm. Yeesh. -
Why do you think they have Meyer so high? I could understand the Cubs keying in on him if this was Pre-Wilken, but the Cubs have really shied away from big bodied pitchers since Wilken came along. Cashner and Ben Wells? I didn't say the Cubs avoided those guys altogether. However, I know you know the Cubs used to draft, almost to the point of absurdity, pitchers who were 6'5 and taller back before Wilken took over. Since then, I think Samardzija and Cashner were the only two drafted pitchers who've signed who are 6'5 and taller.

It's hard to complain about a guy like that who's making the league minimum. An article like this is ridiculous, but Barney's actually a decent player. -
Minor League Discussion & Boxes 6-3-11

Surprising news if true. I really hope he does well, since this farm system needs all the good news it can get. -
Absolutely. You've seen him play, have you not? Many times. His velocity unlike anything I've seen that close up before. I didn't see him at the beginning of this year when he was "struggling" but at the end of the year his velocity was just unnatural. Have you seen Bundy? How would you compare the two?

I'm really hoping the Cubs go all drunk guy on eBay at the draft, otherwise the farm system is going to be in rough shape come the offseason.

Archie Bradley Jed Bradley Trevor Bauer Dylan Bundy Danny Hultzen On another topic, out of everyone in this draft, I go back and forth on Starling and Bauer more than everyone else. There are days I'd be incredibly excited to see the Cubs draft either of them and days where I just want the Cubs to avoid them at all costs. I think Starling's contact issues are overblown and his other tools are excellent, but I also think that he's benefited from a lot of hype. All of the video I've seen of him has been batting practice, where his swing looks really nice, but I have to wonder about his in-game approach and how well his swing would play against better competition. Still, his ceiling is fantastic. I have two issues with Bauer. The first issue is his durability given his habits and mechanics, which was covered extensively earlier. The second issue is whether the Cubs would be the right team for him. All of the rumors about him not wanting to go to certain teams and not wanting to change his routines and mechanics smack of entitlement and coachability issues. I normally don't care about baseball players' personalities if they are productive, but if you haven't even been drafted yet and you're telling teams what to do if they draft you, I have to wonder whether you have the attitude and maturity needed to make adjustments, adapt to higher levels of competitions, listen to coaches, and make it to the majors in one piece. At the same time, he may very well be the best pitcher in this draft. Tough call. Anyone else feel similarly conflicted about other players?
-
I'm okay with Mahtook. He was really raw when he started at LSU and has improved every season he's been there, plus he has been really productive even with the new bats. He's polished, he's a legit five tool guy, and he's probably the second most major league ready hitter in this draft after Rendon. Hell, he'll probably sign at or around slot, which would be great if the Cubs decide to chase after signability guys in later rounds. He doesn't exactly excite me, but I'd be torn between him and Brett Jackson as the top prospect in this system if the Cubs took him. In Law's scenario, I'd go with Jed Bradley (or Archie Bradley; whichever one was not selected before the Cubs).

Good, but not great. His drafts have yet to produce elite talent. The top names from his drafts are, off the top of my head, Josh Vitters, Andrew Cashner, Brett Jackson, and Trey McNutt. All seem to have gotten consideration as Top 30 players at various points in their minor league careers, but that pretty much seems to be the ceiling. None of those guys have reached their respective ceilings yet, so perhaps they might break through. However, as things stand now, I don't think any of them will be superstars. Where I will give Wilken credit is that his drafts have produced depth. There are a ton of high floor guys in the Cubs' system who have a very good chance of contributing in the majors, but who might not have top shelf upside. In all honesty, if the Cubs clean house in the offseason, I wouldn't mind seeing Wilken go. He's been decent, but the Cubs could do better.
-
It's mostly rumors and speculation until about the day before the draft. That's usually the time when teams publicly back off of signability guys and also when reports of offers and agreements start surfacing. Also, on the day before, the #1 overall team normally reaches some sort of an agreement with their expected selection. Things usually snowball from there.

That's a pretty good point in terms of fan interest. I'd be curious to see how the Cubs compare with other teams in terms of attendance figures, ratings, and the like over the past 5-10 years. It may be that baseball in general is going through a swoon, although the Cubs could be doing better or worse than other teams in those regards. Plus, while a lot of people bring up 2003, it seemed like there was comparable interest, if not better, in 2004, 2007, and 2008. In terms of my own interest, I'll catch a few innings here and there, and also check the scores when I miss games, but that's about it. Starlin Castro is the only healthy guy on the team I really care about. I'm following the minors, but this has been a lackluster year (by and large) due to injuries and trades. At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs clean house in the offseason and attempt a youth movement in 2012.

Ryno has to be laughing at this team
Outshined_One replied to Dunstons cannon's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I would have enjoyed seeing him get blamed. Me too, but it wouldn't have happened. The injury excuses would be out in full force. Everyone would give him a pass and would have raised an uproar if he got canned after this season. With Quade, I don't think many people would care if he gets fired in the offseason.
