I understand that as a stand alone stat, win's are more a measure of the team's preformance than the individual pitcher's. But, the team's preformance (W-L record) is a reflection of the preformance of the Batting and the Pitching. You cannot say that it has nothing to do with the pitcher. It's completely absurd to say so. while pitching well can certainly help a pitchers chance of getting a W, for the most part, the W department is up to the offense. The pitcher can give up 32 runs. If the offense scores 33, then he still gets a win. I was exaggerating when saying has NOTHING to do with it, i guess. But for the most part, it has more to do with offense then pitching. How else do you explain Estes last year.

He is a 300 game winner because he is a great pitcher. But is he any less of a great pitcher this year because he isnt getting run support? no.

With 7 wins, I don't believe he should be the starter. His other #s support him, so I see your point. I don't agree, but that's because I think that Wins are an important stat. That, and Clemens got shelled in last years game. Of the other 2 pitchers, Carpenter has as many or more wins, more Ks a slightly higher ERA and lower WHIP. You can make a case for Clemens, but to say that Tony is playing favorites is a weak leg to stand on. Tony had 1 pick to make to fill out his squad, and he didn't pick a Cardinal. Wins, really, have nothing to do with the pitcher. A pitcher could go out and throw a perfect game every single time, but not win a single game. His team has to put up runs for him.

Do you really think it'd take that much? I have no problem trading dope, with the emergance of Lee. But i'd think one of Patterson/leicester might be able to be pulled from that deal. I'm sure they'd want hill, with their pitching woes and all. That being said, I'd probably do that deal.

I'm thinking of sending this to Phil via e-mail: Phil, I was reading your hopelessly flawed argument about Pujols deserving the MVP over Lee, and I was stunned to see that you mentioned Pujols had more "Runs Created" than Lee did. Then I realized you made up your own "Runs Created", which is essentially completely opposite the real "Runs Created", which Bill James (who I'm sure you revile) put together a couple decades ago. Runs Created measures offensive prowess based on an individual's total contributions. Adding Runs and RBIs (and subtracting homers, whatever) only shows a player's contribution based on the team around him. Is it really Lee's fault that he had to bat behind Patterson and Perez for a month, when neither could get on base to be driven in if their lives depended on it? Just for fun, here's the actual Runs Created leaders in the NL currently: 1. Lee 95.1 2. Pujols 81.1 3. Abreu 77.6 4. Cabrera 68.5 5.
