    Florida also made a big roster move too namely Cabrera, so McKeon wasn't the only reason why they won the World Series. Regarding Zim, it was career years for Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith that helped win in '89, problem was they had career years as rookies. I still don't know why people would think that a managerial change alone would do the trick. Hendry's philosophy didn't just get created with Baker's arrival. If Hendry did fire Baker (no way) he'd just hire another Dusty Baker type guy, only he wouldn't be named Dusty Baker.

    I don't know why people will blame the coaches and Baker alone for Patterson's lack of success here. I think you have to place equal blame on the fans who constantly booed him. I blame them, as well, but I have to blame Corey for not being mentally tough enough to not let that affect him. He would've been booed his first plate appearance at Wrigley and it would've likely been 2005 all over again. Continued success to you, Corey.

    It's not the number of appearances that hurts pitchers, it's the number of pitches thrown; and I don't think Aardsma throws that many pitches when he has come in. An unrelated note: I can't believe that Barrett strikes out on an 0-2 pitch, when he swung at three balls. I've said it a thousand guys, but he has little baseball smarts.

    of course, obp's important. unless you have outstanding pitching, you need a good batting average to win. walks are nice and all,but not nearly as important as batting average. the importance of the walk is overvalued. Any way a guy gets on base is important. But to your point, the Cubs have had plenty of baserunners this year -- just look at how many games we lost when we outhit our opponent --- today's game is another exampe. I place a high value on OBP and I place a high value on batting avg. However, this Cub team has neither and that's why they have a pathetic offense.

    I don't think Baker is capable of this. He lets the highs get too high and the lows too low. Flipping the "game ball" to Russ Ortiz in Game 7 of the World Series tipped me off to this. this is weird to me, i know (please dont ask) Russ Ortiz through my sister and bro-in-law, they guy (Ortiz) LOVES dusty. My bro-in-law is a huge supporter of what Ortiz has to say.. and hates Leo Mezzone and my bro-in-law is a huge Billy Beane fan...add that up and make 2+2=4. Why does he hate Leo Mazzone? Ortiz hates Leo because he felt he got too much credit for pitching success in Atlanta, and feels he (leo) gets an incredible amount of production out of pitchers but ultimately burns them out shortly...in essance produce now and get lost kinda attitude... Yet, almost no one talks about the number of arms that were wrecked under he and Cox. Getting back to yesterday's game, even with the crappy lineup, we scored five runs and had a lead for the closer. You can still hate Baker without totally blaming him for every loss.

    I agree with you. But even with Lee that seemed to be by accident. I remember when the Cubs trading for him Hendry saying he could hit 40+ homers and I (and others) were rolling our eyes. We knew he was good defensively and had a good eye at the plate, but I don't think many saw superstar status when that deal was made. So, in my opinion, Hendry kind of lucked out on that one. Again, you're right that it's inexcuseable not to have a top-flight FA or get a top-flight deal done with the payroll. I still don't understand some people getting upset at the Murton trade proposals since many of us said during the offseason that this offense wouldn't be good with Murton in left without a high OPS guy in right such as Abreu or Giles. Murton would be a great asset on this team if we had a GM and manager who knew how to properly construct a team.

    Doing what on purpose? Blowing saves? Mishandling cut-offs and throwing balls away? Hitting into double plays? Throwing balls to first that get your first baseman hurt? Baker is not a good manager, but what could he be doing on purpose to tank the team? Hendry's already given him darn near a cast of misfits on the bench. Is there really a difference when you play Perez or Hairston? There should be, but that's Hairston's fault.

    Okay, I've beaten the" Jim Hendry doesn't know how to create a good bench yet has no problem overpaying one" horse to death. I've also beaten the Neifi stinks horse, as well. So, to be original, I'm going to blame someone else -- Jerry Hairston. How is it that he can't be superior to Neifi Perez? If he were, he'd be playing more 2nd base. Okay, I lied about the Hendry thing, how can he justify having Neifi, Hairston and Bynum on the same team? If Hendry hadn't have offered Perez a contract, I bet Perez would be playing for the Royals or Pirates and making $600,000 on a one-year contract.

    So, if I'm understanding correctly, the love for Cuban mainly comes from the fact that he sits in the first row, comes on the court to make a spectacle of himself and occasionally gets fined for berating officials and the league? I don't get it. I'd rather have Kraft or Buss. At least they can say they've won championships. Dallas may win one this year but, again, for all of his grandstanding that would be his first. And in sports history there have been other owners who took laughinstocks and turned them into winners beside Cuban. Tampa Bay Bucs were a laughingstock, so were the Cleveland Cavs, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers. Just give me an owner who knows how to hire the right guys to run a baseball organization and who make intelligent decisions and I'll be happy.

    Someone help me understand this love for Mark Cuban. I mean it's not like he's the only owner out there. Where are the screams for Bob Kraft? Dr. Jerry Buss?

    It somewhat blows my mind that some fans still consider Hendry a good GM. If he's a good GM how would you describe Walt Jocketty? Gerry Hunsicker? John Schurholtz? To me, a good GM consistently creates a roster that is a contender. Jim Hendry seems to have regressed or is stubborn or both. I see no improvement in his philosophies -- I see nothing new regarding OBP, and I hate that he seems to love guys who throw 93+ but can't throw for strikes. To put things in perspective, heading into the 2004 season it was predicted by many that the Cubs would be contenting for the NL pennant. A few years ago, the Tigers were losing 119 games. Guess which team seems to have gotten better and which hasn't?

    Barrett also could've fired the team up by getting a base hit or a home run instead of grounding into a double play in the first. Hopefully he'll appeal and MLB will take their usual six-eight weeks to give a ruling.

    Oh, give me a break. Seriously. You are going to try and compare Jones and Lee and their worth to this team, now or ever? Lee was still a good player who was young. He just wasn't an elite hitter. Jones blows. Give yourself a break. What are you talking about? Lee was ripped on here in 2004 and so was Hendry for signing him. Remember all the posters who computed the OPS that Lee would have to beat Choi by in order to justify his contract? Offensively, I think Jones is a below average corner outfielder. He is overpaid; however, I'm not going to blame him for putting up numbers and playing a stupid brand of baseball, like getting picked off bases and overthrowing cutoff men, this is what I thought he'd do up to this point. But he still could have a good (albeit it would be a career year) year after his slow start.

    Part of Corey's demise in Chicago was due to coaching, but a lot of it was due to Corey and that he was severely overrated. Five-tool player? I never saw the strong arm or the hitting for avg. after he left A-ball. In the times I've seen him this year he has struck out on fastballs chin high or higher. I wish him all the best, but it was time to move on. To me, he was the position player equivalent of Steve Trachsel when he was with the Cubs. It was time to cut him loose. As for Jones, he was overpaid, but I'll reserve my wrath on him until the All-Star break -- I think he's just now settling in, but he's not worth the contract. Remember, some of you were complaining about Lee's worth during his first year here, too.

    Truthfully, did anyone think Perez had any chance of getting a hit off of Cordero? And because Perez has a pathetic approach at the plate, there was no way he was going to allow Cordero to walk him. Once again, ARam getting hurt hurts us. Only Hendry saw a $5 million value in him. By the way, I think (I'm not sure, though) Perez is the only player in the modern era to get 200 hits in a season and not bat .300 that season. You know why? Because he had like 700 official at-bats, meaning even in his early days he didn't know how to get on base via BB.

    Who did you want? Keeping Nomar was never a pie in the sky goofy concept. He was willing to come back cheeply and switch positions. It's not in the same category of thinking about keeping Burnitz or Patterson. I was one of the very few who supported the Tejada/Prior deal that was rumored. But since it didn't happen, I was very supportive of Cedeno and Walker at SS and 2nd. Also, I believe you and I were in agreement in trying to get Giles to play RF. Of course, signing Giles would've prevented Hendry from overspending on Perez, Jones and Rusch.

    I still don't understand the need for Hairston, Perez and Bynum all one the same team. Two of the three I can see. But all three?

    These are the dates for when we eternal optimists will either call it quits on the 2006 season or will continue thinking we can make the playoffs. During that stretch we play only Cincy, St. Louis and Houston. Perhaps that's what Hendry is waiting for. But for some strange reason (again this is the optimist in me speaking) it seems we should be 12-15 games out instead of only seven out on the loss side.

    I can't believe the discussion has gotten to the point of should we have re-signed Nomar, Burnitz, kept Patterson vs. signing Jones, trading for Pierre and re-signing Perez. The simple answer to me is it should've been no to all of the above. And I said that during all of the offseason. And I continue to be stunned at the OBP fans and the" fundamentals" crowd who still are clamoring to see Pie in a Cub uniform.

    Although Jones showed another example of his incompetent play, let's not forget that Cedeno swung at a ball six inches off the plate two pitches prior to the line out.

    What happened? He and roberts had some words after roberts scored. Resulted in warnings. Didn't Barrett do the same thing in 2004 with the Astros' and that eneded up firing up the 'Stros to the playoffs? You would think he'd learn. I'm pretty sure the Cubs choking, and Dusty being an awful manager is the reason we didn't make the playoffs that year. Blaming Barrett is about the dumbest thing I've heard. I don't believe it was Barrett's fault, but it's a big coincidence that that series started with the Astros being 8 1/2 to 10 1/2 out, then after that series they went on their run to catch and pass the Cubs.

    The bigger surprise was that he got to a three ball count, and actually took two pitches after that!
