    We have to remember the Tribune Co.'s main objective is not the Cubs, it's mass media and making money. I would guess the majority of shareholder aren't Cub fans and maybe not even baseball fans. I'm fine with the budget they allocate Hendry. I'm more dissatisfied with MacPhail, Hendry and Baker than I am with the ownership. Regarding Furcal vs. Cedeno, I'm fine with Cedeno and I think he'll get better rather quickly (albeit I said the same thing about Murton at the end of last year). But why compare Furcal to Cedeno? We could've signed Renteria instead of Garciaparra after 2004, or if the rumors were true we could've had Tejada by trading Prior, but I know that would've made quite a few people mad, which I don't understand. So, I think you have to throw in more SS other than just Furcal.

    I think a lot of people would agree with you. But the fact is the Tribune Co. is a business with many stockholders neither Cub fans nor baseball fans. They just care about what the Tribune Co. as a whole does. You are right, there is no accountability but that's our (fans) faults. We are so in love with Wrigley that we will allow just about any product to be placed on the field. As long as we come 40,000 strong I don't think Dennis FitzSimmons and Tribune stockholders will be too upset at the product on the field. I don't think that Hendry is held accountable and I don't think Baker is held accountable, but at least he gets to hear the boos. Hendry doesn't get to hear boos directed at him too often. As long as 40,000 people show up at Wrigley, I don't know if accountability will be an issue. By the way, my prediction is Baker's extension will be announced either the same day as Prior's return or the same day as Lee's return.

    I would also buy into it, if we had scored more than three runs. Some how some way I think we'd found some way to blow another game with only three runs.

    I have to somewhat disagree. Although Rusch should never start another game in a Cub uniform, you can't say that Guzman would've performed the same way if he knew he was going to start. By the way, what other start by Guzman gave you the idea that he'd be able to do what he did today? He did a great job today, but I can't say he would've done the exact same thing had he been given the start. Len and Bob alluded to this, as well. I almost equate it to the sixth man in basketball. Many sixth men are just better coming off the bench than starting. I don't know if it's a mental thing or what. Guzman could get the next start and crap it up or pitch well. But I think it's unfair to say that we would've won had Guzman started.

    That was a very good hire by the Royals, but he has a lot of work to do with a below than average farm system. I guess my question is, is it better to go in every year with hope and get those hopes slammed or to go into the season with no hope and not get disappointed? In other words, hoping for a .500 season at best?

    I think this is a legitimate question. The Cubs have the payroll to contend every year but don't have smart people running the organization and the team on the field. The other teams are what they are - feeders for other major league teams. These teams will likely never have the payroll to consistently contend. They might sign one or two veterans with some name recognition, but never the big splashes needed to contend. So would you rather be a fan of a team who has the payroll but not smart decision making or a fan of a team who you know what your going to get year in and year out? It's depressing knowing several people picked the Cubs to win the World Series in 2004 after the 2003 season, while the Tigers in 2003 lost 119 games and are now one of the best teams in baseball.

    In 2002 he started 33 games for 213 innings with a 3.66 ERA. 2000 was his first year back from TJS, when it was absurd to expect much from him. 2001 he started 28 games for 174 IP with a 3.36 ERA, an excellent 2nd season after TJS performance. He was fine at the start of 2003, and in fact had a career year. But Dusty extended him to ridiculous amounts, ignoring his past health scares, throwing him 140+ pitches in games. Dusty got a healthy Wood, Prior and Zambrano when he showed up at the door. 2 are down. Thanks for the knowledge. I was wrong, but I could've sworn he missed a few starts in 2002. I know one reason we didn't win the division in 2001 was due to his missing four starts (if I remember correctly) in August.

    I bet Dal that the Cubs would start Perez 140 times this year. I think I'm going to lose but I think Neifi will be close to 140 played though. Hey Cuse, I believe the bet was barring injuries Perez wouldn't play in 140 games. I still think had Lee not gotten hurt, he wouldn't have been used nearly as often. Then again, Hendry should've gotten Nevin or any other replacement far sooner than when he did to see that wouldn't happen. We already knew for some stupid reason Baker saw a lot of value in Perez. With Hendry throwing darn near a blank check at Neifi, I don't think Hendry minds seeing Perez playing. Did I give you the no injury thing in the bet? I must have been drinking the same stuff Hendry was when he signed Perez. "Barring injury" is a terrible thing to put in any sports related bet. Injuries are part of the game, and still no excuse to play Neifi. Please, give me some credit. That's the only way I was sure that Neifi wouldn't play in 140 games. Come on, I guess I'm the only one with absolutely no confidence in Hendry. Even he wouldn't sign someone for $5 million without the hope of him playing a lot. That's Walker's problem, he was rumored to be dealt because his average and OBP are about 80 points to high. Should he drop significantly in those two categories, he's sure to get a nice raise.

    Dusty is eager to ruin Zambrano the way he has ruined Prior and Wood. Wood was hurt quite frequently before Baker even got to Chicago. The thing I hate with pitch counts as it relates to Wood, Prior and Zambrano, it frustrates me to see how easy it is for them to get guys down 0-2 or 1-2, but they need seven or eight more pitches to retire them. Wood was looking perfectly healthy when Dusty arrived. I believe he was on the disabled list every year prior to 2003. Baker definitely hasn't helped him, but I remember saying in 2002 that I didn't think Wood would ever be healthy enough to last an entire season.

    Can anyone tell me just what does Larry Rothschild do? I've yet to see, hear or read anything to suggest he's at any odds with Dusty. If he did, he had two times to leave and decided to stay. In fact, a part of me thinks that Dusty doesn't do anything with the pitchers. Baker gets no free pass at all, but it sure would help if our pitching coach showed anything to suggest that he has disputes with Baker regarding the pitching staff. Regarding Z, could pitching in the WBC and having to get ready earlier have had an effect?

    i'm not big on murton, and i didn't expect much from him this year, but to call him a D+ player is pretty ridiculous. every gm in the majors would take murton over bynum, without a doubt. I'd take Murton over Bynum, too, but I still think Murton has been overall below avg. this year. And, again, that could be because I did expect more out of him. My question is if we never dealt for Murton would he be playing in Fenway Park by now? That goes to my point about our GM setting him up for failure.

Honestly, let's face the facts, we are completely out of the running to make the playoffs and for Murton this would be his first full year here. When Bynum is the other option in LF and his numbers are worse than Murton's well why not give Murton the experience? You cannot expect players to just come up from the minors and start hitting right away, especially when we have the worst coaching staff in the majors. Actually, I'm delusional because I won't completely count us out of the playoffs unless we are 10+ games out at the All-Star break. Having said that, Murton has not been that good and he's better than Bynum but not by a significant amount to think this team would be better with him solely in left vs. a platoon. Ideally, Murton and Jones should platoon, but that would mean a below avg. right fielder every game. Murton has started in 50+ games and even in a platoon he'll still get a good number of at-bats. He was pretty much set up for failure by our genius GM because Murton should only be starting if we had another high OPS on this team (even assuming Ramirez would've had his normal high OPS year). Basically, to me, we're getting upset over a D- player playing games over a D+ player.

It's because of the likelihood of improvement, and expectations coming in. The so-called free pass is given by sane and logical people who don't think a kid has to be great from day one in the majors. I for one didn't expect a lot from Murton this year. If he was going to be a starter, I wanted a great player on the other corner. Otherwise, he should have been platooned. But with a hack like Bynum? What's the point? Are you kidding me??? Let me restate my point, platooning Bynum and Murton is lower on my list of concerns right now. We need new and better personnel on this team. Bynum sucks but so does Murton, right now. And what liklihood of getting better? Yes, he could get better (and for the record I like Murton) or maybe he falls under the "liklihood of getting better" just like Bobby Hill and Hee Seop Choi did, I don't know. Bynum sucks, but Murton has been horrible against righties and his OBP is steadily dropping. I would love to see a Murton/Jones platoon, but our genius of a GM and our genius manager can't put together a good ballclub to do that. And you're a better prognasticator than I because I thought Murton would be much better this year.

    I might be in the minority on this but if this were to happen it would not bother me as much as Perez playing and batting second, or Pierre continuing to bat lead-off. I like Murton but he's not good against righties and he's been absolutely horrible on the road vs. at home. And his .345 OBP is overrated because he was at .370 two or three weeks ago. It is also my opinion that Bynum makes that catch in left field last night possibly helping us win. I still see no reason why Hendry traded for Bynum and he's not very good, but this move would bother much less than other moves.

    This team is a bad team right now no matter what kind of lineup changes you make. The only way this team gets better is with better personnel. Changing the lineup around, even with moving Walker and Murton to the top spots only matters to Jones and Nevin, both of whom could strike out with these guys on. OBP is not just reserved for the first two in the order, but should be good up and down the lineup. Even with a change in the lineup this team would still be bad with OBP, hitting with RISP, grounding into double plays and below average starting pitching. We need new personnel.

    i'm not one to defend jim hendry, but to his credit, he was not counting on wade miller for much of anything this year. Which makes it even more assinine that he didn't sign or trade for a bona fide starter. And no Glendon Rusch doesn't count.

    That's only one of Hendry's many faults. Another fault is not recognizing the need to have depth on the roster. Another fault is not recognizing the important positions of need during the offseason. Another fault is how he devalues his players, rendering them worthless in trade. Another fault is how he could allow the man he hired to keep trotting the worst possible line up cards out to the umpires before every game. Another fault is how he masks the injuries on this team. Another fault is how he masks the true problems of this team and makes ridiculous excuses for why this team sucks. Other than that, he's awesome. :roll: I agree, BBB. Another fault he has is he loves guys who can throw 94-96 even when they can't throw strikes.

    I don't have the win/loss totals of when Neifi starts or when Walker starts, although I'd be both records would be under .500. This team is horible, Ramirez can't hit, Murton and Jones take bad turns/angles in the outfield, we hit into too many double plays, we can't hit with runners in scoring position, we don't have a good OBP as a team, and our starting pitching isn't very good. Neifi being on this team and playing is a big problem, but the list I made above are bigger problems.

    The only way Baker isn't here next year is if he declines to come back. My guess is his extension will be announced either the same day as Prior's return or Lee's return. Hendry won't fire Baker because then he becomes public enemy #1 and he will be the one held accountable. But when you draw 3 million there's going to be little pressure from MacPhail or FitzSimmons. Save yourselves a stroke and always assume the worst with the Cubs.

    It may be a proper differential but Ramirez still has a crappy OBP. I find no silver lining with anyone who has a .314 OBP. By the way, it seems Murton's OBP is dropping rather rapidly.

    Don't forget it's also easy to be a contact hitter when Maddux is hanging breaking pitches all night. Of course, if he were pitching to the Cubs we'd swing over it.
