Heard his IU coach on The Score this morning who said people who haven't seen him catch are surprised how well he moves behind the plate. If he can stay there, stay healthy..wonderful. If he has to move to a corner OF spot, then so be it. His attitude seems to be good and will do whatever the team tells him. The coach said he can absolutely hit and a LH power hitter is rare. -
Aren't you the dude who called Samardzija a 3 on a good team? Yup, he's still a #3 on a good team. If he was a #1, teams would be falling all over themselves to get him now. He's not and they're not.

There is a fantastic group of SP options in free agency this winter. None of the 10 best pitchers in baseball will be available so I'm not sure if they meet your 'ace' threshold, but there's an abnormally high number of good pitchers coming available. Here's the list below of FA SP and I fail to see any fantastic pitchers. I see average at best. Brett Anderson * Josh Beckett Chad Billingsley * Joe Blanton * A.J. Kaplan's been ranting the last few days on CSN, pointing his boney finger at the camera, telling the Cubs to spend some of their $$$ on free agents next year. He's probably reacting to people who sit and laugh at his act and what a fool he has become. I think our acquiring any big time free agent next year depends on the development of the kids. Assuming Baez and Bryant are here at year's end, who's next? Valbeuna at 3rd would be nice, as would Olt solving his batting problems(if possible). That leaves SP. From the list I've seen, alot of older 4-5 SP and no aces. We'll have plenty of those already. Patience, Boys.

I disagree on so many levels. We don't need an overpaid 29 year old pitcher on a below .500 team. In 2-3 years when we're competitive, then maybe(if we haven't developed our own pitching), then we'll go out and pay for top level pitching. But to lock him up now is silly. He's a victim of thinking he's a #1, when he's a #3 on a good team.

I doubt there is anything close to accurate data supporting this claim. I agree. Look at John Kruk. Some list his weight @ 205 lbs. 170 lbs. on Baseball Reference When was that..when he was in HS? I think he passes the eye test of being 240+, under 6 feet and he played the OF. -

Gonna push back on him staying at catcher. Set aside his bat. He's shown he can play the position in college and wouldn't you want the Cubs to nurture that? Would you be satisfied if he was the equal of Michael Barrett? How about Mike Piazza(who was not the best fielder) but had a huge bat(with a little vitamin help)? I know that teams are looking for power hitters(which seems to be in rare quantity) but if you can get that with an average fielder/arm who calls a good game, then we'd all want that. -

Count me in if he can stay at catcher. Welly is terrible and unless we have a good one already in the minor league system, this is a major need. Now..bring on the young pitching in the next few rounds. -
Actually the plate in the head story is pure fiction. Zimmer got beaned in the minors and doctors placed six metal plugs(3 on each side) in his head. His beanings led to mandatory batting helmets. In the late 50's many players opted to wear a protective insert for their hats, not the full helmet. The full helmet with ear guard came much later. Tasted Red Man once and thought I was gonna die. Did you ever swallow it? Blah! Switched to a mouthful of Bazooka and achieved the same look.

Okay, I didn't have a good basis to talk about the ads on radio. I know that on the very rare occasions I listen to sports talk in Chicago the ads are often for strip clubs. I assume the ads on WGN radio are similarly targeted at their particular audience. If WGN Radio aired a strip club ad, there might be 100 heart attacks before it ends. It does trend to an older audience. The WGN Radio officials said they lost Budweiser and Chevy as sponsors because of poor ratings, which is strange because Bud is a big corporate partner to the Cubs and the new signage. So there's interest in tv viewers apparently. The media market is changing and who knows what platforms will pop up in the next few years. Older people don't use computers/mobile devices to watch content like younger people do, so there's that. And by the way by 2017, half the U. S. population will be 50+.

There's all kinds of research to dispute that. There's more disposable money in the older market.

I found these clowns on WGN to be complete idiots. They admitted they were caught flatfooted with the changing media platforms and that had no answer to it. They consistently brought up the number of losses the Cubs have had the last few years and that WGN Radio ratings were nothing in August and September. They mentioned that WBBM will no longer be a news station and thus will allow WGN to provide more news/traffic(which they claim their listeners want) when Cubs games are on. They did mention The Score as a possible landing site for the Cubs after one year. They hinted at the White Sox interest but that's because Reinsdorf owns the Bulls. They said the savings of losing $6M a year on the Cubs will go to keep the talent of Steve Cochran and Orien Samuelson on the air. BS! My feeling is that both WGN TV/Radio is run like a quaint small-town business. They refuse to adapt to the 21st Century and just don't get it. They would prefer to have a Kapman, Judy and Turdy, Milt Rosenberg(thanks God they finally cut that fossil loose), Dan Roan behind the mic than the Cubs. Fine..enjoy the witness protection program.

Very interesting stuff. With the White Sox contract with The Score up after the 2015 season, it might make more sense to move the Cubs there after 1 year on WBBM. No one cares about the White Sox and I can see The Score lowballing the Sox to drive them away or simply not even bid. No matter where the Cubs are the fans will follow. Remember the Blackhawks had to pay The Score just to carry their games in the early 2000's and now their radio broadcasts are red hot. I wonder about the Cubs radio affiliates and it used to be pretty widespread. Will the non-CBS stations who currently carry the Cubs games have problems now?

Crane Kenney will be on with Bruce Levine on The Score @ 8:30AM for 1/2 hour. There will be an extra chair for David's Kenney man-crush.

Kenney says first shovel goes in the ground in July(two months from now) for the new clubhouse. Completion by opening day 2016. The bleacher expansion and signage will not be piecemeal, need to order steel this summer. Don't know if that means signage will be done for next year or not.

Kenney will be on CSN Sportstalk Live with the Kapman today. Two knuckleheads with room temperature IQs. Gosh Kap, please goofy socks for us. First question should be: 'Crane-you're the guy who negotiated and signed this agreement..why are you still with the organization?"

I'd be satisfied with a major league ready starter and a top catching prospect. The more Welly plays the worse he looks.

I've heard Bruce Levine say on The Score a few times, the new Budweiser sign will bring in $14M+ annually. I don't know if the Cubs have released many financials on the upgrades, but $14M a year would be great.

I think it's up to the Cubs entirely to welcome him back. No explanations needed. Just do it. Scottie Pippen did a far worse thing by refusing to go in for a play where Tony Kukoc would get the shot. He pouted and whined and sat. We forgave him. Sammy took roids but he never pissed on the fans and media. Look what that turd pos jumbo mac patty McGwire did. He pretended to sign a 3 year contract extension to boost season ticket sales. Then did not sign it and retired with a fax to the media. He didn't have the balls(can't wait for his to be the size of walnuts and then disappear altogether) to return to St. Louis one last time. What a bum. Welcome Sammy back.

I heard that Ryno was asked by the Cubs front office if he would wear a Cubs jersey when he threw out the first pitch for Friday's opener. What a low class move. I know the media landscape has changed but I hold out hope that there is some way to broadcast the day games around the country(Fox1/WGN/whatever) without fans having to buy the MLB package. That's killing a new generation of fans. Lastly, I have found both the WGN-TV and Comcast opening broadcast segments to be lifeless and boring. They bring no excitement to the game. The mid-80's opening was outstanding.

Going to the HOF Induction for Maddux Questions

Cooperstown is a pretty cool place. Small town, if you're driving in possibly the best way to go is to park in one of the outlying parking lots(there are many) and take the bus(there are many) into town. The real action is 3-4 block area, easy to walk. Plenty of cool shops to browse but beware of price gouging and non-authentics for baseball unis. You can get personalized Louisville Slugger bats and all kind of things. Pete Rose is normally there in one of the stores signing stuff and shooting the breeze with anyone who will listen. I've seen some of the older HOFers just walking around, enjoying the town. Most are very approachable. There is no charge for the HOF cermonies, but I think there is reserved seating upfront for VIP's and family members. Bring a hat because it can get hot. Good eats at Schneider's Bakery for good donuts or the Cooperstown Diner(only about 25 seats) for breakie and lunch. Ommegary Brewery is a must and they do serve food. I'd recommend the Hawkeye Grill in the Otesaga Hotel for dinner. But no matter what, try to make reservations as soon as you can because the crowds are large. Warning: Avoid Dimaggio's Hot Dogs on the SW side of town at all costs. Their dawgs taste like Alpo and certainly not Chicago worthy. -
Not a lawyer, but wouldn't their gripe be against the city who granted zoning request? Can't see how all internal repairs wouldn't have started on Oct. 1st. It doesn't add up. Although the prospect of seeing Beth Murphy throwing herself on a backhoe loader to prevent construction is equally repulsive.

Why would the threat of a lawsuit by the rooftop owners stop any construction? The rooftops lawsuit would be about $$$ and not blocked views or anything else. I'm thinking there might be some other agenda by the front office.
