  1. I hope the Astros do take Meadows or a position player because I've got my heart set on Mannea. I'm afraid the astros will steal him away from us though, call it my eternal pessimism. Absolutely loved the way Manaea tore up the Cape Cod League last year. If he can show that this coming season, I'll agree. But Stanek is intriguing to me too. Whoever it may be, any pitcher will have to really stand out for the Cubs to take him second. Otherwise I think the FO will go with a strategy similar to last year and take a position player first and address pitching with volume in the next few rounds.
  2. Keep it going. Still fun.
  3. That's a good point, but it's a lot easier to teach a high school kid to run down a fly ball than not swing a bad pitches. Plate discipline. The bane of so many otherwise talented players. This kid seems to have a handle on one of the most difficult areas. It will be interesting to see this season unfold.
  4. If what's written in the article above is accurate, I bet the Cubs give Smith a lot of thought. Agree, that made me think of him in the same group with Frazier and Meadows. He sounds like exactly what the Cubs want at the plate. Patience, power, and very low strike-out rate. Hell, that draft blurb for Smith at the 12th pick sounds sounds better than all the previously mocked picks. If Smith doesn't run up the draft board too much this season he could be one of those picks the Cubs could save some bonus pool money on taking him at #2.
  5. Thanks for that rasin. Saw Rodon mentioned as someone who would be picked number one this year if he were available. He's a Freshman college guy. He's actually a sophomore now. And hell, he would have a gone 1.1 in last year's draft. Ahh yes, forgot classes start in the fall. Guess I just think in terms of baseball seasons. :-)
  6. I have the feeling that FO is leaning position player unless an arm blows them away this season. Not thinking Appel right now. I'd lean towards Manaea or Stanek. I think it will be difficult to predict Theo and his team.

  8. Yes...but the point was if the Cubs opt to try to save bonus money because they really like someone expected to go 7th or later, they would propose to pick him 2nd and pay him the rate he would have gotten. That's why I was wondering what the 2014 draft looked like. In case we could not sign…whoever. I'm not married to the Stewart kid, just thinking about the strategy.
  9. Well you seem to have picked up on my thinking pretty well. I was thinking specifically of Kohl Stewart, who could be a bit of both. A bit of a reach at 2nd overall right now but depending on how high the FO may be on him at draft time, he could theoretically be paid a bit under slot. Right now he is projected top 10 a lot of places. BUT, he loves football (almost a second religion in Texas) and has a long family tradition going to Texas A&M where he committed. So the question in my mind was about the risk he may not sign. Your answer mitigates the risk in my mind anyway. Thanks.
  10. Jensen Bruno Martin Same as last time. Maybe I'll be in sync this time.
  11. I enjoy trying to think through the different possibilities for the first couple picks even though a lot can change between now and the draft. If the FO wants to go pitcher in round one I like Stanek or Manaea right now. Position player I'd think Frazier first then maybe Meadows. If they want to go for some cost savings for later round bonus money they might take a position of need, catcher. Reese McGuire is highly thought of. Right now no one else is as good and this is a position of strength in this draft. If its a pitcher they take first there will be some catching talent at the second round pick. But if its a position player first they would likely go with a pitcher with the next few like last year. Does anyone think next years (2014) first round is better than this years? I'm wondering if the risk of taking a hard sign at number two might be mitigated by the talent at number three next year.
  12. Go ahead and take the top 3. So many folk are voting for the same guys every time but because they are not consensus choices they go back into the pot for the next vote. It gets to be slow. Don't fret the reset. We all make silly mistakes. Still fun.
  13. Hey that makes it seem to go faster somehow. :stickman:
  14. I don't pretend to be a scout, I just think the season he (Bruno) had, with all the talent on that club, I give him the benefit of the doubt until he shows he can't bring it to the next level. I understand that most folks want him to prove it at full season ball first but.......call it a fan's bias.
  15. Jensen - This guy had a great year and I would not be surprised to see that continue. Bruno - Such an interesting prospect. Jack of all trades defensively. Won a batting title while being shuttled from position to position. It will be interesting to see if the catching experiment continues. Martin - how much talent was really at Boise last year anyway.
  16. I agree on the depth at catcher. Not much coming up the system. The Cubs definitly have a chance to address via the draft this year with a relatively deep class of prep talent. Reese McGuire seems to be the most highly thought of but he would not be available by the time of the Cubs second round pick. I'm not sure the FO would be willing to take him second overall though. If the Cubs go pitcher first they might use the next pick on a decent catcher. But I suspect they will go position player first which means the focus for the next few picks will be pitching. Oh well, there are other ways to get a catcher.
  17. Bruno :banghead: Jensen Zych
  18. Bruno, Jensen, Rondon. Maybe flip the fist two. Rondon is a rule five that may turn out well.
  19. Blackburn, Bruno and Jensen. No particular order.
  20. Loux for the upteenth time.
  21. Loux - hopefully for the last time? Blackburn - Purely on upside. Bruno - a personal favorite. Needs to keep hitting as he moves up. Anyone think he skips KC and goes to A+? Jensen is next on my list. Maybe I could even rank him above Bruno and Blackburn.
  22. Whitenak I like Watkins, just not quite yet.
  23. Is there a good reason to look at Viscaino's TJS situation as a glass half full while Whitenak's is a glass half empty? There seems to be a discrepancy in logic where one must come back and prove himself healthy to be considered and the other does not. Has Viscaino pitched yet? I think lacking other info on the status of recovery, both should be viewed in the same manner. Don't get me wrong, in no way do I believe the players are equivalent. Just the injury situation. I like them both.
  24. Hmmmm Another vote for Loux bites the dust Whitenack others opinions here have convinced me to consider him higher. And Bruno, a personal favorite.
