  1. Sands is in my next couple. He didn't pitch too much after signing but everything I've heard is positive. I wonder if the Cubs like his brother, who is in this years draft.
  2. I went with Stinnett and Zagunis (too early?). I agree with everyone on Stinnett. I especially like the low wear and tear on the arm going with all that talent. Zagunis has the plate discipline that seems so hard to come by these days and can play almost anywhere. My dream is he becomes a poor man's Craig Biggio.
  3. That is nice arm side movement. He was aiming for the other side of the plate!
  4. They should be over the limit, but unfortunately they are not because MLB likes to make rules as they go. My understanding was because they didn't retain the rights to Nix despite giving him the 1.5M that it did not count. I kind-of figured that was the only difference. Thanks. Of course that would make sense since making a kid take you to court for the money you agreed to pay him is the kind of behavior MLB teams like to foster anyway. :)
  5. Question for the board: I hope this wasn't covered elsewhere but since Houston had to pay Nix doesn't that mean they went over the spending limit?
  6. Yea Kirby had a note on Swanson after week 1 Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt Swanson is considered the best shortstop prospect in the 2015 MLB draft. He has all the tools defensively to stick there and profiles to a top of the order hitter with an advanced approach and above-average speed. After hitting .333/.410/.475 over 72 games as a sophomore with 22 stolen bases, the 6’-0”, right-hander opened his junior season right where he left off. In a three-game series against Santa Clara, he went 6-for-14 with a double, triple, stolen base and two walks as the ’Dores took the series 2-1. Vanderbilt is going to be well represented in the first round of the draft, and Swanson could possibly be the first of the bunch selected. Read more at http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-10-college-players-rise-week-1/44817#w3mRVDyt3wFCD2RP.99 He does fit the bill. Up the middle player, good make-up, able to control the plate.
  7. Really like Kirby's weekly take on his top ten college performances with a eye toward the '15 draft. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-10-college-players-rise-week-2/44848. Dillon Tate, Ian Happ, and Phil Bickford caught his eye among others. And who is this midshipman? Luke Gillingham, LHP, Navy With all of the stud arms in this year’s class, no one has been better — at least statistically — than Gillingham, a 6’-3” southpaw for Navy. His first two starts of the season are as follows: 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 16 K/0 BB 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 14 K/1 BB Those are silly numbers and have earned him back-to-back Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors. There isn’t a lot of scouting info on him but that should change very quickly. As a sophomore, he had 59 K/21 BB over 67.2 innings. 8. I saw that. The wording seemed funny to me. Is there really some sort of elbow soreness that is advisable to pitch through, even in relief?
  9. I hadn't thought about that before. Sometimes it seems that the ability to make consistent contact is the one skill guys don't have when they get to the major leagues. The landscape is littered with guys with power that just couldn't keep from striking out. I'm just wondering if developing contact skills first might be a good thing? I can imagine that it makes the scout's job much harder because power would have to be projected instead of apparent.
  10. I think this is telling. Law is all about "his" opinion. He doesn't care if its accurate or not. Its all just about him because he knows better than anyone else. How dare anyone correct him!
  11. Line-up next year: Alcantara, CF Soler, RF RIzzo, 1B Baez, 2B Bryant, 3B Castro, SS Castillo, C Coghlan/Ruggiano, LF Agree with those thinking that Russel coming up later in the year @SS means Bryant-LF and Castro-3B with Coghlan/Ruggiano to the bench. If Castro is traded it will not be until all the other guys are looking good with Bryant going back to 3B. At that time LF will go back to the pseudo-platoon unless Schwarber is also ready. Almora may also show up near the end of the season but may face a challenge sending Alcantara to the bench. Another possibility is a guy like Russel Martin at C. We need more than just the young guys just for emotional balance. Next year will be fun. :good: Next year will be fun? :beg: Next year will be fun! :banghead: NEXT YEAR WILL BE FUN!!!!! :yahoo: :stickman:
  12. Bryant's upside is Triple Crown winner. Not sure Baez has the hit tool for that. no it's not. the only thought process under which bryant's upside is to win a batting title is if everyone's ceiling is everything. Fair enough if you want to be flippant but how does that make Baez' ceiling higher? You do agree that Bryant has the better hit tool ceiling right? I wasn't trying to be flippant, in all honesty. Baez's "ceiling" is viewed as higher, I'm guessing, because he has pretty close to as much power as Bryant while being a SS who probably ends up at 2B or 3B (mainly because of the team he's on), while Bryant is a fringe 3B who probably ends up in the OF. That and he's a year younger. Either way, I think debating these things is rather pointless (but I guess everything we talk about here can be boiled down to that). They're both excellent prospects. Cool. I guess I forget the positional value part of that equation often with all the offensive numbers these guys put up. Can't wait to be cheering these guys at Wrigley!

  15. We have two in common. I go Geiger, Silva, Martin. I don't understand the reason to take Dunston so early and leave Martin sitting on the bench. He was last year's version of Dunston until he got injured. No reason he won't fully recover.
  16. Nice to see some early returns on the international spending spree.
  17. Bruno, Martin, Rosscup. Rosscup might be ready for a loogy role as early as mid-season should trades happen. Martin is last years Dunston Jr. and should have just as much respect coming back from surgery (TJ i think?). Bruno (also a Tj returnee) is just one of the underdogs Ive been a fan of for a couple years now. He just hits!
  18. Yeah baby. If you just consider what Bruno has done across both A- and A+ .361/441/.492/.933 it makes you sit up and notice no matter the samples size. And the numbers were essentially identical both places so he obviously didn't miss anything skipping a level. He could use a little more speed but he has a great stick a good eye at the plate and can play all over. He has to fail at a level before I'll change my view. Tseng/Bruno/Trey Martin.
  19. No, no, no, no, no. I know it's probably too late, but I do not want this to become a thing like "Greg Maddux threw 88 MPH" and "The league screwed the Cubs out of a home game in the 1984 NLCS." I can see myself being wrong on Hendry's spending on the draft (development not so much) but what does that have to do with the time we got screwed out of home field advantage in that SD series. That was very true. Yea I know Leon let that ball through his legs but thats not the point. We did get screwed. http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2013/4/13/4219958/cubs-1984-playoff-myth-dallas-green Guess I'll trust you on that one but I thought the home field was alternated only in the WS and that win loss record was what decided home field everywhere else. Hell it was so long and so many beers and brain cells ago. Thanks to both you and Kyle for correcting me anyway.

  21. I agree with you. Skulina gets my vote. I like Contreras but hasn't convinced me yet. I actually like Malave better. Underwood needs to show me some progress first I'll consider him more later this season when we have more data to judge.
  22. It wasn't the Hendry picks I had a problem with, it was the development of those picks. Under Hendry, Baez would have gone all Vittersery. I think most of Hendry's problems stemmed from the Tribune Co's tight draft and minor league development budgets. When he had support from above he was able to spend more in spurts but once the ownership thought they were in contention the budget would be restrictive. Towards the end the purse strings opened up a bit (Soriano etc) but that was because they were trying to sell the club and needed to show something to up the price. Baez was a great pick andhis skills would have gotten him to the majors under the old regime as well. I don't have any fears that he will fall short due to make-up or lack of defensive usefulness like Vitters. And Vitters can still be a major leaguer. He just needs to show he can hit at the top level and someone will stick him in LF.
  23. I think at some point there has to be a pitcher (talent wise) who would be good enough for the FO to forgo their normal bat first thinking. The question there is, how good do they have be to look to them? I also agree that the college bats seem to be fewer and not as well thought of. I like Turner. I don't really know much about the others mentioned above. But we do have a ways to go 'till June. I'll enjoy watching this season unfold.
