  1. How could you? Someone was jokingly suggesting we do another best poster tournament, but I think we should do a "best banned or departed posters tournament". We all know Bum would win it, but deciding who he plays in the final would be fun. Banned Bracket: Deucebaseman YanrSlatr CubbieBum Mizzou wrigley23 (is he still an active member?) ZZ Thorn reds44 Many many more...... Voluntarily left bracket: Jon DiamondJaxx 1/2 of VancetheCubsFan gooney's evil twin (I know)
  2. They don't have Theo anymore. I'd be surprised if anyone left in that front office knew what OBP was much less WAR. WAR? What is it good for? Evaluating baseball players.
  3. I get that hiring a GM isn't as exciting as winning a WS, and I also get that Cubs fans have annointed many false saviors in our past only to be let down. But think about it this way: in 2006 we were a horrible baseball team with a manager who believed that walks 'clog the bases' and who has to play his vets over younger talent in lost seasons. Our ownership was a cold bland corporate entity where the Cubs were like 3% of their total assets and a corporation that was starting to nosedive financially. Our president of baseball operations had no concrete plan and oversaw the building of sad sack teams like: the 97 Cubs, the 99 Cubs, the 2000 Cubs, the 2002 Cubs, and the 2006 Cubs. Our general manager also had no concrete plan other than the emulate the last World Series champion, even if the current team was not built in that way. Simply put, our organization was a mess and despite their best efforts, it was/is still a mess in 2011. There was no reason to feel any assurance that management knew what they were doing, and your best hope as a Cubs fan is that they would stumble into a lucky team every 3rd year that by dumb luck sort of came together for 1 year. But then of course we knew that, in trying to improve the team, would only mess it up for the next couple of years. The Ricketts came about. And he cares. He's not a soulless corporate entity. He is willing to open his mind to explore what makes baseball teams successful. He's willing to invest in a long term plan, etc etc etc. But in order to be successful, he needed to hire the right man. And he did. This move completely changes everything about the Cubs. No longer do we have to feel like our management is incompetent. We can relax a little bit and trust that our baseball people are going to get the right people. If Hendry signed something we weren't in favor of, it was 45 pages of bashing him and the move. If Epstein does the same, we will immediately try to figure out what we were missing and why we undervalued that person. So why celebrate this by jumping up and down? Because why the [expletive] not.
  4. Oh that's right, you are too young to be a part of the original NSBB photo thread.
  5. Not the best quality but here are some iphone shots from the game.
  6. It's not the top of the 8th, the game is over and they are choosing what to eat from the postgame spread. There is no way Boston wants to bring back a lame duck GM that doesn't want to be there anymore and then not get anything in return when he leaves after next year. It just doesn't make sense. This is negotiating 101 and you are somehow getting fooled by it. Luchino pulled this same crap in 1995 when one of his guys wanted to take a GM spot in Detroit. We all knew it would be a brutal negotiation up front so let's not flip out when they can't immediately make a deal. Were 95% there with the 5% accounting for a last second change of heart.
  7. Nope, and you've officially crossed the line. Congrats
  8. Also, if you want to talk about Chris Harris getting overhyped, his Madden Rating this year is 92.
  9. Wait, how are we gaining 2 yards on spiked balls? Also, we both got to include false start penalties in there.
  10. Option A: Get sacked Spike Ball Result: 3rd and 17, clock stopped Option B: Spike Ball Get sacked Resule: 3rd and 17, clock ticking.
  11. Jon's not interested in the Cubs anymore the last time I heard from him. Something about hopelessly incompetent front office. But this was back in like 2006, and he remained apathetic for 07 and 08 so I think he's being legit. Edit: Wow, he hasn't posted since May (I believe Jon is still a big Bulls fan) or logged in since August 12th. I thought maybe he'd log on to check out the Theo news but I guess we've lost him as a fan. But that's ok because we have kingkong vs. godzilla
  12. I'm mostly joking but when you spike the ball, you lose a down. When 1 out of every 3 plays is a sack and 1 out of every 3 plays the receiver runs the wrong route and the pass sails over everyone, then it only leaves you 1 legit chance to move the ball for a 1st down.
  13. Exactly. Don't bug me while I'm taking a [expletive] piss for god sakes. If you can't take a leak in peace it would piss you off. LOL! That likes me like Jay more. I can imagine this guy all excitedly coming up to him, not even a big football fan just happy to bump into a former Vandy guy, who happens to be famous. I would prefer that celebrities not hide their true personality and just be a stuck up dick if that's what you are. I remember that story almost a year about involving Quentin Tarrantino and that idiot girl from the PR firm that he was hitting on, and the story she wrote keeps casually mentioning how Jamie Foxx is with them when they leave the bar and go to Q's house, etc. And Foxx never says a word to her or even acknowledges her presence for the entire time he is around them, which seems like it was for several house, at a party, on a long car ride, and at Q's house.
  14. I don't remember that, but that's hilarious
  15. I'm sure CARMINE just had a virus that day.
  16. Gotta love politics.
  17. That's cute. But what mythical entity prevents us from winning the World Series? The Billy Goat curse only prevents us from getting to the World Series. We need to explore this so that when Theo gets us past the NLCS, we are prepared for what awaits us in the World Series.
  18. I was just putting together a random team filled with the players I want to keep from the current Cubs and fill in the rest with soley FAs just for fun, and the Kelly Johnson/Jeff Baker platoon really warmed my heart. Johnson actually hits slightly better against Lefties over his career but whatever, Baker can sub at other positions too as a platoon guy. If we can get an .815 combined OPS at 2B i'd be thrilled.
  19. Hello we should probably trade all our draft picks if Angelo is goin to be the one using them.
  20. I can't believe how good of an offense the Cubs looked on paper. Looking down that lineup on August 1st, here are the OPS's for the regular starting 8 .960 (Ramirez) .930 (Sosa) .910 (Lee) .870 (Alou) .850 (Nomar) .825 (Barrett) .820 (Walker) .750 (Patterson) Compared to this years team: .871 (Ramirez) .819 (Pena) .773 (Castro) .759 (Soriano) .742 (Fukudome) .721 (Soto) .719 (Byrd) .666 (Barney) Different eras no doubt but wow.
  21. nomar coming to the plate in his first AB with the cubs was such an epic moment. then he grounded into a double play on the first pitch, but nobody even cared. didn't he end up having the game winning hit or something on a line drive to left? IIRC, the Cubs had a small..maybe 2-1 lead throughout the majority of thet game, and in the 7th or 8th, they had a rally going and had already scored at least 1 run, when Nomar came up and kept the chains moving with a liner to left to score another run in the inning. Edit: Memory was a little off. Cubs were down 3-2 going into the inning, and had scored 3 runs already in the inning before a Nomar liner to left made it 6-3 Cubs.
  22. I belive a few seasons' worth of the oldest threads got archived during one of the site crashes/rebuilds. Yeah I know. There used to be game thread from the 2003 playoffs here. Crazy stuff. Was just seeing if for some reason the archive.org site happened to archive individual threads that got a lot of traffic at the time but I guess not.
  23. Tried my hardest to find Tree's infamous MS Paint Thread from 2004, but this is the close the internet wayback machine would let me get: http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/795/sumtree.png We need one of these for Theo.
  24. They don't have Theo anymore. I'd be surprised if anyone left in that front office knew what OBP was much less WAR.
