    Just getting the first game thread post out of the way. Dempster is looking pretty sharp today.

    I would be stunned if he was a Cub. We have 3 second baseman on the roster already, and all have more upside than whatever Castillo could give us offensively and defensively. The only reason he would become a Cub is if Jim Hendry's fetish for collecting broken down second basemen returned. We have three underwhelming young guys who don't offer anything we might be able to call consistent. Just knowing what you're gonna get is something Hendry seems to place a premium on. Hendry will send DeWitt down to AAA, platoon Castillo and Baker, and let Barney play backup MI. He'll then look to upgrade the position with an Aaron Hill or Kelly Johnson (maybe even a Jose Reyes) around the deadline if we're still in it. proclamation> I've never understood certain GM's fascination with getting plays because they know what they are going to get. If you know a player is probably going to give you an OPS of .620, but you aren't quite sure about another second baseman, isn't the smart choice to go with the unknown? I would think most AAA 2B can at least pull that number off, if not higher. But because you don't want to be surprised you will just go with the definite. Stupid decision making.

    Did he actually just try and say Orlando Cabrera was more important to the Reds' success than Joey Votto? Seriously? I know he didn't come right out and say that Cabrera is better than Votto, but it sure seemed like it was implied. That's the worse thing I've read....well, at least in the last couple of days.

    You know, with the upcoming talent of the minor league system, the payroll being reduced this year (money being saved back?), him being a "hometown" hero, and not much in the way of contracts past this year...maybe Albert Pujols is a future Kansas City Royal. Okay, probably not.

    He'll be 26 or so when most of the guys hit the majors to stay and he'll have around 6 years by that point. It's stupid, but we all know most organizations try to have some sort of veteran on their team to show the "rookies" how it's done. Butler may not be old, but he will have quite a bit of experience. Hopefully the Royals go for that instead of signing guys like Kendall and Ankiel.

    Seems like Angels fans on Angelswin.com seem to be about 50/50 on this trade. I really don't see how they can be so happy about it. To me it looks awful.

    Apparently he re-upped with them for 4 years/30 million. Not a bad deal at all for the Royals and with all the youngsters coming up maybe KC won't need to go out and sign the "veteran presence" since they'll have Butler to fill that role. Oh, it's on http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com main page.

    I totally agree. Not only did the Royals have more money on the table, but sometimes people don't really want to play in high pressure markets. I know if somebody offered me $80,000 a year to do a job I was comfortable doing with little pressure compared to a higher pressured job for $100,000 a year I probably will take the 80k. What was Cubs offer for Meche? Anybody know? A better comparsion would be probably $200,000 instead of the $100,000... Would you be able to turn down $120,000 a year then? Considering Royals probably offered $10 mil more than what the Cubs offer was. My example isn't the best simply because I think the Royals offered him more money and years. So less pressure/more money but less of a chance to compete or the opposite? As much as we all want the players to be competitive and always want to win games no matter the cost that isn't always going to be realistic. Some guys just want the paycheck and a stable lifestyle. As for my case? Yeah, I couldn't turn down the extra $120k even if the job did make me slightly insane and irritable. When the percentages are more like 75-100% more instead of 15-20% it's a lot harder to turn down.

    From what I've been able to follow Meche has always been a class act. I hope he enjoys his retirement. Too bad Soriano won't decide to retire a little bit early.

    True. I mean which one would you rather have? A catcher for 100 games at $3 million or a catcher for $800,000 for 62 games? I can't believe people don't see the value.

    He's had similar interviews. Too bad he wasn't any good. I've always wondered if guys that play ball but agree with statheads realize they suck. Fuld seemingly knows quite a bit about stats so I wonder if he realizes that his speed and grit isn't making him a good ball player.

    Reading that interview made me go from not caring about Fuld to actually liking him a bit. And it made me want to strangle members of the Cubs organization.

    This is ridiculous. :lol: Typical Cubs mentality. There are numerous choices for backup catcher that could be had for $400,000. And they'd probably better at defense than our "gold glover" Koyie Hill.

    But Tom Ricketts is a fan and just wants the Cubs to win the World Series!!!! I'm less and less impressed with Ricketts every time one of these dumb ideas comes along. Agreed 100% I'm starting to get the feeling that he was more a fan of Wrigley than he ever was of the Cubs.

    That's definitely something to be happy about. Being from Kansas all I ever hear is about how great the Royals system is. Knowing that we would be number two if Castro and Cashner counted is something to look forward to.

    If Pena plays well enough to get an extension to 2012 then I doubt it will be for just one year. He'll be looking for at least 3 years and we'll probably give it to him.
