  1. Ryan's definition of a prospect, anybody who has ever received any form of compensation for playing baseball. What is the advantage to having Carlos Pena for the next 2 months over a live A ball arm?
  2. Gooney's defintion of filler = anyone who's not a top 150 prospect.
  3. Exactly. There was no good reason to keep Pena, unless you somehow think you'll get a better return at the waiver deadline. ESPN is reporting that the Cubs motivation was that none of the offers for Pena were better than the compensation draft pick the Cubs would get should Pena sign elsewhere in the off-season. I mean, I guess Pena wouldn't return much, but I don't like offering Pena arbitration on the chance he accepts it. And who's making this decision? When's the last time Hendry's offered arbitration to a guy with the intent of picking up a draft pick out of it vs. wanting to bring the player back.
  4. Pena is only more valuable to the Cubs if you're worried about your record the rest of the season.
  5. And he also had this to say. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/6782205-417/gm-jim-hendry-doesnt-believe-cubs-need-to-go-boom-to-improve.html In any other division - 5th place is last. Jimbo benefits from the fact that we technically aren't in last place. So yeah, there better be a rebuilding effort. WHAT THE [expletive] ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
  6. Who said that? I'm opposed to offering guys 25%+ more years and/or dollars than everyone else. Such as they did for Soriano. And such as folks apparently want to do for CJ Wilson. I'm floored that people think CJ Wilso will get something like 3/30 on the FA market.
  7. Look you guys, Gene Chizik said as of now everything's ok, why won't everyone just drop it??
  8. You mean in terms of mass?
  9. Your point is that our 40 man roster didn't have 40 guys who went on to have better careers than McGehee? Your point is the guy pitching poorly should be made to pitch better? Failing that, we should get a better pitcher?
  10. That's pretty much the definition of a lottery ticket. If you're not a highly ranked prospect but have a good approach, then you're just somebody with a low ceiling whose peak will be bench player or middle relief.
  11. How much more valuable do you think Jeff Baker is now compared to when we acquired him, because judging by BAs ranking of the Cubs system before the '09 season, Albuquerque didn't even show up on the depth charts for right-handed starters or relievers. 70 guys showed up on organizational depth charts, and he wasn't one of them.
  12. There is no chance in hell the Cubs could get a Chris Archer or Michael Burgess type for Baker. We probably couldn't get the current version of Michael Burgess.
  13. Do most ticket-buying fans even know who Jim Hendry is? Based on my trips to Wrigley, I'm guessing not. Pretty sure your perception is inaccurate.
  14. Kind of hard to typo "Cleveland included nearly $4 million in the deal" though, no? Well it's obvious somebody misinterpreted who was picking up what.
  15. ESPN still has the Indians picking up $775,000 ETA: It is Buster Olney though, who I wouldn't trust to wash my car. And I don't have a car.
  16. No, but if the Indians are getting Kouske pretty much for free we should have gotten something better. I'm not saying their top prospect or anything but something better than the return we're getting now. The Indians are paying for $4 million of Kosuke's remaining $4.5 million. WHAAAAAAAA???
  17. Yeah if he's in talks to become Team President, he's not going to publicly say the GM should be gone, it'd be pretty amateur, and if he's not in talks to become team president, he's certainly not going to publicly deride somebody who's part of the fraternity.
  18. I really want to know what you think we'll get in return for Jeff Baker or Darwin Barney.
  19. Sean Marshall isn't replaced by a LOOGY. And who's replacing Kosuke in this scenario? And you replace Dempster with Wilson...ok, who's replacing our 5th starter?
  20. Well that certainly looks like an ugly return.
  21. We did rather well for ourselves last time we received mid-level prospects from the Indians. I wonder if upper-level and lower-level are referring to their leagues (i.e. AAA and low A) or their status as a prospect (i.e. B & C)
  22. It doesn't seem possible to have spelled that many players' names wrong in one post.
  23. But it's not like we're 6 games back and can say, if we only had clutch hitting* this year, we'd be right in it. Instead you can say, if we only had clutch hitting this year, we'd be run of the mill bad, rather than terrible, and realize we're not 45 years away from contending. *I have no idea if our clutch hitting has been worse than it should be.
  24. If we dumped "everything we can" like some on here have suggested, they could get the payroll down to ~35 (eat 17M/Y on Soriano, 7M on Z, 2M for Ramirez buyout, 1M on Marmol) We'd lose 130 games, but oh well at least we'd have a mildly upgraded farm system.
