  1. I anticipate Pagan being sent down when Floyd returns from the bereavement list. I believe you anticipate wrong. As good as Pie has been, he is overmatched against LHP, Cubs will need to platoon him for now, and Pagan is the only guy that can be that platoon partner. No, the move needs to be a trade of either Murton or Jones, there is no room for three RFs on this ballclub. One of them has to go, and because of his pop, Floyd won't be that guy.
  2. What are they waiting for in promoting Kroeger? Seriously, has he not proved he can absolutely destroy AA pitching at this point? Let's challenge him at a higher level, please.
  3. Interesting. I thought the idea was for Soriano to be a good influence on Pie, but it looks like just the opposite. Actually, no, not a surprise at all. Felix is a winner and a very special kid. I've yet to hear from anyone that has played with Pie that didn't absolutely LOVE the kid as a teammate. And of course, you know that Felix has played in the league championship for every team at every level he's ever played for, right? World Series, here we come!!
  4. No he wasn't. I posted the Royals would take a bat for weeks, and that their emphasis had switched to Moustakas over Wieters over a week ago. Sigh. There are other boards I guess.
  5. Supposedly Guzman to the DL. Guzman couldn't stay healthy as a BP arm. I like the kid, but no way was he going to last as our permanent 5th starter. Unfortunately, I'm bracing for Marshall's return to earth which would seem to be inevitable. For some players, pitching multiple times in a week is harder than once ever 5 days. I don't see why Guzman getting hurt as a reliever means he can't start. Are you still banging this tired old drum? How is your crystal ball working now? Last month, you were pretty high and mighty that the Cubs were "dumb" for taking Guzman out of the rotation after (yet another) arm injury. And you assured us there was "no way" Marshall could outpitch Guzman. I don't think I'm going to be calling you anytime soon for a GM's job, if that's OK with you. Probably not the night shift at a tarot card reader's booth, either.
  6. There's just no way a guy that's been talked about as much as Wieters, who did not hurt his prospects grievously on the diamond this year, falls all the way to #18. No way, no how. I'm still hoping the Cubs take him, but he won't get out of the top ten. Too much talent.
  7. So basically, it's likely that sometime in the next few weeks we'll see no less than three players in Iowa that can mash but are playing out of position because of suspect defense at their original spots: E-Patt, Kroeger and Jake Fox. Plus, Buck Coats was originally a SS, and McGahee has been all over the diamond. I like that the Cubs are willing to try new things to find a home for a kid with a bat, but I think these "square peg/round hole" problems suggest the Cubs should start moving some of these guys to AL organizations, where there are more options thanks to the DH and deeper benches than in the NL. Also, can I go on record in this thread and be angry about the whole Josh Hamilton thing? Was a free shot at a former high 1st round pick worth giving up for a mere $50,000? I know, I've heard the argument "the Cubs were never interested in him", but they should have been.
  8. Oops, sorry, then I find a thread on another page on the same topic. I'd delete this one, but I see no delete thread button, even though I'm the thread initiator. In any event, I would still like to see Kroeger's 07 numbers so far if anyone has them.
  9. OK, I usually like to keep up better with the minor league kids, but what is the Kroeger story? How did we get him, what is his skillset and projection, defensive outlook for position, etc... And what are his complete 07 numbers to-date, they must be pretty eyepopping at this point based on how many times I see a good day posted for him in the minor league game threads.
  10. Let's wait until he puts up a sustained sample of production at a higher level before getting too excited. It is encouraging, though. I have been on the Piggy bandwagon since last year, I really don't know why the Cubs haven't given him a chance in the bigs. He has nothing left to prove in AAA. And he's a Joliet kid, c'mon!!
  11. I've thought the same thing. Joe Blanton could be available. And wow, I knew Kendall was having a rough year, but holy smokes, I don't know that I've ever seen numbers that awful from an everyday player before. A sub 500 OPS, are you kidding me? Yeah, I think they could use Barrett....
  12. As for Samardzija, if he's not going to work out (and the fork looks awfully big), it is good that he struggles mightily as he has been--it could convince him to give up on the game and the contract in favor of an NFL career. From what I gathered in a different thread, if Shark goes for football, the Cubs are off the hook, other than his signing bonus. I can live with a $3-4MM mistake a lot easier than a $16MM error! As for the draft, isn't Wieters even MORE of a priority now, after the Barrett meltdown this week? It seems extremely unlikely he'll be a Cub in 2008, so I think this forces Wilkens' hand. And that makes me happy. The Cubs can tread water with some combination of Blanco, Hill and Soto for the rest of the year, and hope Wieters is ready to play ML ball in 2008. It all comes down to the Royals--do they take Wieters, a more affordable HS bat like Moustakas, or a pitcher? All I can say is that in the Sunday KC Star, they made the argument that the Royals have "cheaped out" on other high 1st round picks in the past, choosing signability and affordability over the Best Available Talent. The consensus is they won't do that this time, and that bodes ill for Wieters falling to #3.
  13. 1. How much of his contract is guaranteed money? 2. If he gives up baseball and goes back to football, what degree of financial relief do the Cubs get?
  14. Woah Vance just crossed the 30,000 mark Is that supposed to be cool?
  15. I've never forgiven Barrett for 2004 and the idiocy with Oswalt. Barrett is just plain dumb and needs to go. He was a FA, no players were harmed in acquiring Barrett, so there is no harm in sending him on his way. Now. Zambrano, we've seen enough too. Maybe he's hurt, who knows. But I let him get a few good starts under his belt, then trade him while I can. No way I resign him to a megamillions deal, I'm already screwed with one of those for the longterm (Soriano). Zambrano is entirely too volatile and unpredictable to spend that kind of money on.
  16. Yeah, it's great flipping news to play a Judy-hitter guy in a big league ballgame that literally cannot catch the ball. Murton sucks. Enough already.
  17. Please, no HS pitchers in the early 1st round. Just. Don't. If Wieters is really available and the Cubs pass, oh man, that will be a new low.
  18. Besides the players already mentioned, the Soriano contract is the killer. What an AWFUL deal that one is shaping up to be. We're on the hook forever for megamillions to a marginal player that can't get on base. Terrific. This contract will end up as Darren Dreifort, Jason Kendall type bad: only worse, because of the length. Nice going away present, Jim Hendry, thanks!
  19. Is Brian Dopirak the worst player currently on a big league 40-man roster? Seriously, wow. Done. Finis. Sayonara....
  20. If the trend is towards Wieters being available to us at #3, then count me happy. The sooner Wieters is on-board, the sooner the Cubs can jettison the miserably bad Michael Barrett. Yes, I realize Wieters is also defensively-challenged behind the plate, but it is unlikely he is also mentally-challenged like Barrett; and Wieters certainly projects as a better hitter. Wieters please.
  21. Sequoyah Stonecipher, now THAT'S a name, LOL
  22. Well, talking shop with a local a couple days ago, I got new reinforcement of my earlier info that the Royals are definitely leaning towards a bat. Wieters, Vitters, Moustakas are all three getting their heaviest scouting. So I again believe that Tampa is the key--they take Wieters, we'll get Price; they take Price, we'll get Vitters. IMO.
  23. I would trade Guzman for Cordero in a heartbeat and not think twice about it. Unfortunately, I don' think Bowden is that stupid.
