  1. Dusty Baker is a buffoon, this we can all agree on. He is also bigoted--against young, position players. IMO it is just happenstance that pretty much every young position player in the Dusty Era just happens to be white, while just about every worthless hack is not, that's just random. No, Dusty is an anti-rookie bigot, if there is such a thing. And a buffoon, did I mention that? And dumb. And dumber. And......
  2. Bump. Ron Ce really stinks. Let's see more of Theriot, instead. I mean, Theriot DOES play SS, yes??
  3. Fuld and Holdzkom??
  4. So you're saying Wade Miller is the next Chris Carpenter. Sweet.
  5. "Stats may not mean everything" as someone posted earlier, but if Harvey can't hit a minor league curveball for his life--and he can't--he has no big league future. None.
  6. I posted for Gallagher in the original thread, so I voted for him here, too. All he does is win and succeed. I like Veal a lot too, but other than WHIP and a better K-rate, Gallagher is the better pitcher at this stage. Either or both could easily stall sooner rather than later, but IMO they are the top two prospects in the system based on performance, without regard to ceiling. Add in ceiling, and Pawelek and Pie become tough to ignore. I also happily give the bronze medal to Fox, what a great year. Good-hitting catchers are a valuable commodity, if he can just improve his defense some, he has a guaranteed big league future. And I can count on one finger the number of minor league catchers the Cubs have developed in the last twenty years (Berryhill). So, Gold--Gallagher, Silver--Veal, Bronze--Fox.
  7. Well said. I don't like Izturis, but the Cubs have the money and I DO think he has more upside for us than Cedeno does. If for no other reason that his defense is better and he runs the bases better. It's just $4MM for one year after all, Izturis' deal shouldn't hamstring Hendry from making other big moves.
  8. 1. How's Bear Bay been doing? Now THAT was a stupid trade. Dumb dumb dumb. 2. Ricky Nolasco. Ouch. 3. Willis and Garland were pretty bad hits. But the thing is, Juan Cruz or Ruben Quevedo or Ross Gload or (insert name here) could have been the ones, instead. It is SO hard to project minor leaguers. I think the Cubs have done pretty well overall in this regard, they at least seem capable of judging their own talent pretty well.
  9. Soriano batting 5th behind Lee and Ramirez would be very sweet. Barrett 6th behind him, Pierre and Murton at the top of the order, Izturis 8th and I guess Jones 7th, that isn't that bad a lineup.
  10. Cedeno isn't very good. His minor league numbers suggest as much. He had a one-year brief blip of success in Iowa. Yawn. I'd rather go get a Mark Loretta for 2B say, then give the job to Cedeno for 07. He can be a useful utility player since he can play more than one position now, and that's still a meaningful contribution (at league minimum salary). But starter? I don't think so. As someone else mentioned, not with Izturis already penciled into the lineup.
  11. Man oh man, is that ever a depressing list. Young, Weeks, Markakis, Quentin, Jackson, Billingsley, Milledge, Cordero and Wood just for starters. But hey, we have both Harvey and Aardsma! (puke)
  12. I would like to recall this thread.
  13. I don't think Hendry views Izturis as untouchable. I think he'd go in the right deal. Yeah, I think there are other GMs who think as highly of Izturis as Hendry. I'm holding out hope that he is traded to one of those teams for a legitimate major league player, and not another young Neifi. Will people get off this *#%$ "young neifi". Izturis isn't a "young neifi" ok. Plain and simple. Give the guy a chance to rebound from his injury. No offense, but Izturis sucks. Plain and simple.
  14. I think Jacques could be tradeable, too. He's due to make $5MM in 07 and $4MM in 08. If you can move him, that money is freed up to help bring in the slugging corner OF. I'm plenty comfortable with Murton (perhaps with a platoon partner) for the other corner OF spot. We need one slugging corner OF, but two is a luxury and we have other needs. Besides, I like Murton, he's already perfectly acceptable in the BA and OBP area. Just needs to pump up the SLG some and he'll be fine.
  15. Zito, Mulder, Schmidt would all be good options. I'm concerned about Schmidt's durability, we don't need to go thru the Wood and Prior situations again. And Mulder hasn't been completely healthy since his last year in Oakland. So it has to be Zito, not that I have any illusions Hendry could/would actually sign him. But if you trade Prior for a bat, I'd be comfortable with a rotation of Z, Zito and three of our youngsters.
  16. Really need to dump Izturis and Rusch, then that would be some genuine progress. Izzy + Rusch + Neifi = $10MM in '07 money, that would just about cover a Barry Zito salary. I don't think we can be so lucky with Fat Glendon, we're stuck with him, but I'm hoping we can move Izturis in the offseason. Trade for Tejada and then things would definitely be looking up!
  17. USS, I'm with you, but that's what so maddening. The Dodgers? Why can't the Cubs replicate that? Unlikely yes, but..... Perpetually and hopelessly a Cub fan......
  18. Look, no long-timer here is under any illlusion about my opinion regarding the current incarnation of the Cubs and its brain-trust, such as it is. Shoot, my sig alone should tell eveything regarding where I've been on the matter (such siggy existing for nearly three YEARS now). And we're all (presumably) lucid and sane regarding the Cubs disaster that is 2006 and the reasons forthwith. Yet.... I can' shake the thought that we're just 9.5 games out of the wild card with 5.5 weeks yet to play. We have one of the five best pitchers in baseball (Z), a bonafide all-star at 3B and C, several interesting young starting pitchers, a deep bench, an respectable leadoff man/CF, and a nice bullpen. So... Is it possible??
  19. Recipe for success: 1. Trade Prior for Tejada. 2. Sign Matsuzaka and Zito. 3. Use one of Hill or the three M's, along with Cedeno, Jones and one of our late inning relievers (pick 'em) as trade bait packages. Targets: slugging corner OF, strengthened bench, minor league position player prospects. 4. Re-sign Kerry Wood as a reliever. Re-sign Juan Pierre. Rotation: Zambrano, Zito, Matsuzaka, two of the youngsters (say Marmol and Marshall). Bullpen: Wuertz, one of the youngsters (likely Marmol or Mateo), Wood, two of Eyre, Howry and Dempster. Fielders: Lee, Ramirez, Barrett, Tejada, Izturis (2B), Pierre, new slugging corner OF, Murton/Pagan/Jones. That's a good team.
  20. I like what little I've seen of Theriot.
  21. Greg Maddux--No-Hitter (first of his career) Neifi Izturis--0 for 7, 6 men LOB Discuss. Naw, this franchise ain't jinxed.
  22. The Cubs' plan is clearly to suck for another century. They're awfully good at that.
  23. I am a hockey fan and you speak the truth my friend. Amazing as it seems, the Blackhawks do make the Cubs look good by comparison. The Hawks have appeared in the finals and won the Cup since the Cubs sniffed the World Series. Hawks have stunk the last decade, but the Cubs comfortably beat them in the futility department.
  24. Pops Stargell is not on your list. Neither is Bill Terry. Killer spent less than half his career at 1B, Musial much less than half, Yazstremski, Richie Allen and Banks, too. My list of true 1B: 1. Gehrig 2. Foxx 3. Sisler 4. Greenberg 5. Anson 6. Terry 7. Mize 8. Cepeda 9. Murray 10. McCovey If you want to discount Anson as a pre-Dead Ball era, 19th century guy, the others move up and I'd put either Stargell or McGwire in at #10.
