  1. I can't remember if I put it in this thread or not, but there was an interview a while back in which Dunn was asked about how his homers were typically tape measure shots and he said something like- "hey, if I hit one in the upper deck it counts just the same as when Junior hits his in the first row."
  2. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/448674,CST-SPT-gordo29.article I really hadn't seen this article before I made my post. at the end of the article-- "And if Marmol becomes the guy now, Dempster might be able to start making that transition to starter he was supposed to make last month. The Cubs aren't in the market for a starter, but a move like that would give them more depth and right-left possibilities in the rotation -- or the kind of quality pitching depth to trade for something useful at the deadline a month from now." Maybe they could trade him as a starter?
  3. As long as Neifi's not coming back the other way. The one good thing about him on Detroit is that he hardly ever plays and I don't have to curse his existence.
  4. That's what led me to the theory. The idea to trade Dempster is intriguing to me, as he has a not overbearing, but still bad contract. Detroit could have interest in him if they would ever come to grips with the fact that Todd Jones sucks.
  5. Do you guys think Lou and Jim will revisit Dempster as starter? Could they use the DL stint and all-start break to stretch him out with bullpen sessions, then send him on a rehab assignment? I'm not saying it's a good idea, I just know lots of teams are hesitant to go with three lefty starters and the previous talk about a young fireballer to close and Dempster to start has me wondering if they'll do it.
  6. I have a question about Barrret's play calling- doesn't he look in the dugout before nearly every call? I haven't seen as many games lately and maybe that's with men on and he's looking for a pitchout call, but I don't know what kind of leeway he had with calling pitches anyway.
  7. 2 homers yesterday
  8. Reds fans can answer that question for you. Not objectively, from what I've heard.
  9. Rocket Sauce likes Adam Dunn. He wins.

Nope, he's not married yet. That's his girlfriend, they been together since high school. Then she lied to me! Just kidding, I don't know why I thought they were already hitched. Maybe the BBTN guys said it or something.
  11. The catcher got lucky one time.

Would Guillen have made the play. He isnt the best SS around. No, Guillen doesn't get to that ball, IMO. If you get a chance to see the replay on that one, watch what happens to Polanco. I was like you guys, the first 3 or 4 times i saw the play, I was like how did the Neifury get to that ball (then i stupidly remembered he is a Supernatural force and it is not meant for mere mortals to understand his power). Polanco got absolutely crushed on the turn, like a QB getting hit on the blind side. Not every 2b would have stood in there and taken that kind of shot for a teammate. Bill Hall was trying his darndest to stop it. Kudos to him for taking that blow and getting the throw out in time. I agree with you, Polanco actually made the tougher part of that play. In typical Neifi fashion, he actually made it look harder than it was. He was in great position to catch the ball and stopped a sharp hit, but it's not like it took a lot of range.
  14. Uh, I'm pretty sure that the "saber geeks" would laugh at the concept of Adam Dunn being a rally killer. That's what I was gonna say. Jeff Brantley does some work for the Reds and I specifically remember about two weeks ago he said, after a David Ross solo homer with the club down three, "you know, sometimes solo homers can be rally killers." Jeff Brantley is no saber geek.
  15. If you ever read anything awesome about pitching in regards to mechanics, etc. then you were reading him. Which is odd, b/c I'll be working with a kid this Summer on his hitting (which I feel more comfortable doing compared to pitching). That's funny. I'm sure you've posted on hitting before as well, I just haven't seen them.

  17. the reds fans i know hate dunn, and pretty much blame their team's struggles on dunn's bad defense and strikeouts. From the few times I've heard their radio team on XM, I think the announcers blame him as well. yeah, marty brenneman has a ridiculous hatred for dunn. but you should hear him gush whenever juan castro grounds out to second to advance a runner to 3rd base. Marty hates the whole team when they're losing like they are, but yeah, he loathes him some Adam Dunn.
  18. I'm just glad I know Pinghitter is UK now.
  19. I doubt the Reds would have problems trading within the division considering Dunn will be a FA. My guess is they would not allow a window to work out a contract extension prior to trade within the division, however. Maybe they wouldn't. It'll be interesting to see if the Reds get aggresive. If they dealt Dunn and Griffey they'd have tons of money to spend in the off-season and would get a big batch of young talent in return. Of course, if they just trade for middle relievers, it's not going to help them at all. I found it interesting yesterday hearing Peter Gammons speak on the subject. He thinks it is more likely that Dunn is moved than Griffey. In his opinion, Reds fans come to the park to see Griffey. So he thinks the Reds would ask for more in a trade for Griffey than they would for Dunn. I think he's got a point there. I've been to a few games at GAB already this year, and Reds fans love Griffey and are less than enamored with Dunn. I think the fanbase would choose Dunn over Griffey all day to trade.

  21. If Dunn's on the block, the Tigers should make a strong move for him and have him play first. They have the need and they have the chips to trade. I agree with Vance, if Soriano will move to right, then the Cubs could do it, but I think the ownership concerns and a likely hesitance from the Reds of trading within the division will keep it from happening.
  22. There may be ways to sort that on MLB.com. From what I've seen, as long as a player has enough at-bats in close and late, etc. , their stats will be very similar to their career stats. I was looking for the league as a whole not an individual player - is there anywhere to find this? :google: http://www.chicagosportsreview.com/localopinion/localopinionview.asp?c=145516 from the article- "...we do know that in the long run, players hit very close to their normal levels in clutch situations. I looked at all players from 1987-2001 who had at least 6000 plate appearances. The player with the biggest difference between his CL average and his overall average was Tino Martinez at 22 points. With about 100 CL at-bats in a season, this is just two hits." Unless you have sample size problems, players will pretty much hit in clutch times of a game about the same as they do any other time. Now, I think there are guys that are more comfortable in big situations in big games, because players are human- but stats would show that your MLB line for clutch and non-clutch hitting numbers would be crazy close.
  23. Oddly, it was his decision not to use Eyre, the blower of leads, that led to the collapse yesterday. Many of the losses rest on Lou's inability to recognize that certain pitchers should not be on the mound with the game on the line. This was not one of those losses. I think Dempster faced about 4 lefties out of 5 batters to start the god awful eighth. Of course, Eyre's been terrible against lefties this year.
  24. This was my main thought on Izturis last night. His one value is supposed to be his defense. On the ground ball Derosa dove for, Izturis should have been able to dive/ smother/ knock down and save a run. He tried a running backhand play and it looked to me like laying out (as good as he's supposed to be) would have stopped that ball and held the guy at third.
