Why not? See above. Let's assume for a moment that there's even a 1% chance that Epstein to the Cubs falls apart. Hoyer's not going to quit his job in San Diego if there's a chance he has to work with someone other than his superbestbuddy. The Cubs aren't going to hire a new GM if there's even a tiny chance they have to find a new President (who will presumably want some sort of say on the GM front). The Cubs can not only offer Hoyer a lot more money than the Padres, but give him the kind of payroll that he'd never come close to overe there. I think that for that he'd be willing to wait a year for his buddy to join him and risk the chance that it doesn't happen. And please nobody come back with any Crane kenney related comments. Ricketts has already said that the new GM, whoever it is will have a [expletive] off Crane clause in his contract. I'm pretty sure if Kenney ever tried to meddle in Theo and Jed's baseball operation, the result would be something like the hospital scene from the movie Knocked Up: "So don't even try to come into that room, that's my room now. That little area with the Pepsi machine, that's your area. My room, your area, stay in your area, stay out of my room, back... the... [expletive]... off."
