  1. Too lazy to look it up, but I was thinking it was May 1. Late enough to lose a big part of the season.
  2. Agreed and as I'm thinking about it now it did have a feel of "We're the polished radio hosts - you're a dumb jock who's lucky in his friends" feel to it. Like I said though, I wasn't listening closely and it really didn't sound that bad to me. There are a few hosts (Holmes) on the Score who try to emulate Bernstein - which I find really annoying since Bernstein is a total dick to callers (meatballs and all). I do agree but there are a lot of meatball callers that deserve their treatment. I can tolerate Bernstein, he's at least intelligent, but Boers is horrible. So is Jerkovich on ESPN1000. I listen to B&B when I can't stand more shitty news about congress or the middle east. Bernstein runs the show and is a total [expletive]. He's bright, but he gets in a shitty mood and treats people like [expletive]. Many deserve it, but many others don't even get a chance. Boers is a completely [expletive] worthless yes man
  3. I've never taken the time to split up his numbers, but from memory I thought that Lake started out ridiculously hot (Puig hot you might say), then looked like a 23 year old rookie. His total numbers may look good at the end of the year, but it seemed like he had one awesome month in a partial season.
  4. Does anyone want to handicap whether or not Beeler gets added to the 40 man? Is he anything more than a back-end type?
  5. Debt servicing could technically be considered part of the budget and push the total higher. While I'm not sure that still would make the total expenditures higher, since revenue also is down, maybe as a ratio it's higher. None of us have ever seen a MLB budget from top to bottom and few of us would even be equipped to understand it fully, so I don't think you can really say horsepoop in response. "All these documents are yours. The people's property, you pay for it! But because the Ricketts considers you children who might be too disturbed or distressed to face this reality, or because you might possibly lynch those involved, you cannot see these documents for another seventy-five years. I'm in my early forties, so I'll have shuffled off this mortal coil by then, but I'm already telling my eight-year-old son to keep himself physically fit, so that one glorious September morning, in the year 2038, he can walk into the Triangle Building across from Wrigley, and find out what the Ricketts and Sam Zell knew! They might even push it back then, hell it may become a generational affair, with questions passed down from father to son, mother to daughter, but someday, somewhere, somebody will find out the damn truth." Awesome
  6. I'd pump the breaks on Maddux being the greatest pitcher in our history. If it's our history then his braves years are thrown out, if that's the case he can't touch Mordecai Brown. . It's a lot closer than you'd think. I know it's close, just not the slam dunk it should be. Stupid Cubs letting Maddux walk. According to Baseball Reference, Mordecai Brown was worth 45.3 WAR in 10 seasons as a CUB, while Greg Maddux was worth 33.8. Brown played 5 seasons for other teams at the end of his career, in which he totaled 9.8 WAR. Maddux, of course, spent 11 years with the Braves, amassing 66.0 WAR. In 4 years with the Dodgers and Padres he totaled 4.8 WAR. Brown had some pretty incredible seasons. It's crazy to look at those numbers from the 1900's and 1910's and think about the run scoring environment as it compares to today. I know ERA isn't the stat, but in his peak his ERA was under 1.50 four straight seasons. It may be evven more unbelievable that Maddux had consecutive seasons with ERAs of 1.56 and 1.63, with WARs of 8.5 and 9.7.
  7. I really want the Maddux bros. I'm imagining a sort of Mario/Luigi dynamic here. Obviously it would be Will/Carlton. Pretty sure they were cousins
  8. Hello? Sex offender hotline? I have something to report.
  9. http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/72147/the-kings-of-the-call-up "Here's the kicker: Bogaerts was the youngest player in the Eastern League and International League this year, and is now the third-youngest player in the majors behind only Jurickson Profar and Bryce Harper. There are few more reliable markers for future stardom than a player who excels at various levels while being younger than virtually everybody else." When I read this I couldn't help but remember Kyle's comments about how Baez is #1 in OPS and #146 in age for Tennessee/Southern League
  10. I looked at the play by play on Leal and he gave up 4 hits and 3 runs to the first five batters he faced. After that just one hit and one walk.
  11. Nice list. Not much to fuss about with it Vizcaino, imo, feels like he should only drop to tier 2, but i get it - missed two whole seasons Maples, with his newly found command, could fit into the 4th tier at least A lot of pitching options look better to me than Contreras and Ha, though Amaya is more intriguing. I'd even place a likely high end reliever like Black over either of them.
  12. I was at D'arcy's Pint in Springfield and pretty much did the same thing. Wow, I've been there. Horseshoes!
  13. Has it been determined that Cabrera's move to the pen is due to an innings limit?
  14. MLB article says Sweeney will be getting the bulk of the work
  15. [/img] Tangled, do you have the new QOTSA album? I'm sure you've seen this: likeclockwork.tv
  16. What are the odds that Lake goes up to take DeJesus' place? Better chance than Jackson?
  17. Hey everybody - I wanted to post that we had our third child (first boy) this morning. Cheers!
  18. I opened the thread, chose Appel due to the near universal acknowledgement by experts that he's the clearest top pick, then wanted to change my pick to Bryant and then Gray. It's hard to see past the potential in Gray. Pitching is risky, but neither of these guys will need more than a season and a half in the minors, so that risk is somewhat diminished. Both are ace types, but I like Gray's Verlander comparison, even if it's not fair. Hard to pick. Can't wait to see how the rest of the draft shakes out. Do you folks believe that we'll focus on pitching as heavily as last season?
  19. I've always been under the impression that 21 is age appropriate for Low A, Short Season - 20/19, Rookie - 19/18 and so on. And by age appropriate I mean that is the age of a majority of the players at that level. If you are a top prospect you're probably a year or two ahead of that pace. I'm curious what other people think and why. Thanks. According to BA, the median age for the FSL in 2012 was 23 years old. See: http://yourprospectsucks.tumblr.com/post/24623508386/the-basics-of-minor-league-baseball Also, according to Minor League Central, there are only 13 batters under the age of 21 currently in the FSL. Dustin Geiger is the 26th youngest player in the entire league. http://minorleaguecentral.com/leaderboard?lid%5B%5D=123&y=2013&split=200&amod=%3C%3D&age=99&time=0&type=batter&table=0 According to BR, the average batter age in the FSL is 22.8. And according to them, Geiger is the 32nd, with regards to age, of hitters with an AB. This may be a bit dated, but helpful to this discussion: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/minor-league-leaderboard-context/
  20. And he stupidly just had his first kid. He's got a lot of work to do to catch up to Antonio Cromartie
  21. I'm in if you're still looking. Yahoo?
  22. Keeper league? Money league?
  23. You're right about Torreyes by month. I'm inclined to write off his terrible BABIP month a bit and believe in his track record, maybe too much. And I completely agree on DeVoss. He'd be the guy to get bumped around for just about anyone else at this point.
  24. Torreyes did really well from June on last year. His awful start just kept his overall numbers down. I think he, out of the group listed originally, is easily the right choice for Tennessee. I'd be stunned if DeVoss skipped Daytona. He wasn't all that great at Peoria last year to the point that I wouldn't hesitate to send him back unless a better prospect needed to start there.
  25. I'd be stunned if he started anywhere but Daytona. He shredded Peoria, but didn't continue when he moved up after Alcantara's injury. I think had the injury not happened he would have stayed in Peoria until the end of the year, but either way, I don't see him going straight to AA. I doubt Alcantara's injury was the reason Baez was promoted. (An opportunity? Sure.) Epstein and Hoyer had already proven once that they wouldn't promote Baez until they felt he was ready. Do you think Alcantara would have been promoted, too?
