  1. I was wondering about that as well. It's the only way I can possibly think of that would make any sense. Even then, I don't like it unless he gets a nice return on Barrett. I don't know why they'd trade Barrett. He's a bargain on his current contract and provides much-needed offense. That said, his bargain status might make him even more attractive, and perhaps he could be used in a deal for a very good hitter or pitcher. But unless the player coming back is a legitimate star, it'd be dumb to deal Barrett. I agree. I wonder if there really is any truth to the "rumor" that the pitchers prefer to throw to Blanco or just don't like throwing to Barrett. I don't tend to believe it because the numbers don't reflect that. Having said that, Barrett could be a nice trading chip because he is slightly under paid for his production right now, but will be a free agent after next season. The biggest problem obviously being that it creates another whole offensively (depending on who Barrett is traded for).

  3. What I don't understand is why anybody would want DeRosa. never said i did, just saying that this is the going rate, i would be willing to bet that durham gets at least 5-6 mill. what happens if derosa splits with jones? pretty good production in rf for less then 10 million. my whole point is you can't tear apart moves without knowing the real meaning behind them. i will let the offseason play out and judge from that point on. How many off-seasons do you need to see play out? This is the same thing Hendry has been doing the last three years. I guess I don't see why people expect it to change now.
  4. Again, it's a pattern: $4.15 to Izturis $4.5 to DeRosa $3.25 to Rusch $2.5 to Blanco It's $14.4 million. It's not the "littlest thing" You're assuming that those four positions on the team would be adequately filled by people making $0. You have to assume that the people there are at least making something. 4 players at an average of $400,000 each, combines to $1.6m. Make one of those guys a millionaire veteran and the total cost is $2.2 million, leaving $12.2 million on the table for somebody, or somebodies, who can actually help the team get better. So you're going with Cedeno, one of the worst hitters in all of baseball, over Izturis next year. And you're going with Theriot, very possibly a one-year wonder, over DeRosa. You don't have to start Theriot and Cedeno if you don't sign DeRosa. There are plenty of other options to be signed/traded for. Hell, put Theriot at SS and sign Soriano to play 2B is one option (by using the millions you haven't wasted on the above mentioned players).

As goony pointed out, it's still 12.2 million. I'm not advocating staying away from all players like this because they are worthless. There is a place for a guy like DeRosa or Blanco on a team, but not at the price tag they have and the unjustified playing time for guys like Izturis. Similar production could be had from people like Theriot and Soto. Then you have much more money to chase down the likes of Drew, Schmidt, etc.

  7. Gil Meche to the rescue!!!! Based on the off-season so far, I'd say a 5 year $70 million offer is in order.
  8. I can't believe I actually let myself believe Hendry was changing his MO after the coaching hirings. I'm so stupid. This will be the same old garbage. I can't wait for the "all you people do is complain" crowd to berate me for not being a true believer.
  9. This thread is going to dwarf the DeRosa thread, and rightfully so (IMO). This is a waste of money. Wasted so far: $4.15 on Izturis; $4.5 on DeRosa; $3.25 on Rusch (unless he retires); $2.5 on Blanco. I really just hope everyone remembers all of these contracts if/when Hendry misses out on guys like Schmidt, Drew, Soriano, etc. I don't blame the Trib, I blame Hendry for wasting.
  10. What a joke. Ugh. I'm hard pressed to understand why White couldn't seem to effectively post up and even when he did, the guards weren't dribbling down to get a better angle to feed the ball into the post. For a coach that seems hell-bent on feeding the post (as Sampson claims to be) they sure don't look like they have put a lot of practice into it. This is pretty basic stuff. How did Vitale "call out" Sampson? He said he should have called Weber, that's it. He also said any coach would have recuited Gordon if put in Sampson's situation.
  11. I'd be interested in Dunn (as always) but I still don't think Hendry values him as highly as many of us do. I think the point about trading him inter-division is valid as well. The Reds may be hesitant.
  12. maybe he's planning on trading them.
  13. it was mentioned earlier that he signed with the understanding that DeRosa would be the starting 2B. I think you missed the point I was making. less money would have gotten Craig Wilson and that monster line as a right handed platoon with Jones, and not have cost a type B signing. yeah, i missed your point. i agree, though i don't know if Wilson is willing to sign for a platoon role.
  14. it was mentioned earlier that he signed with the understanding that DeRosa would be the starting 2B.
  15. What is this garbage? Why can't a person be critical of a signing that sends lots of money to a utility player who is reportedly going to try and be the everyday 2B without being accused of always being critical? Do you seriously not see the potential downside risk to this signing? It's at least as strong as any upside opportunity. The point it simple, it appears some posters favorite pastime is being critical of anything and everything the Cubs do. If that is ones style, more power to you. That is absurd. There is clearly a risk with this signing and some feel (justifiably) that DeRosa is being vastly over-paid. Whether you agree or not, it's a valid arguement. As for my own personal feelings on the trade. I don't like it, but I'm not overly upset either. It seems clear he's being signed to start at 2B, and that's a bad idea, IMO. If he was being signed to platoon with Jones, I'd be happy.
  16. If you're trading Barrett, you have to use him to fill another hole (SS/2B/OF). Trading him and just getting back prospects, isn't worth it (unless you can spin those prospects to a team like the Marlins to get Cabrera). They way I figure it by trading away Barrett and Izturis it opens up the door to more realistically signing Julio Lugo to play SS. Then we can sign Greg Zaun or Bengie Molina to play Catcher. You could possibly then use some of the prospects recieved in that deal to trade for Tim Hudson. edit: the reason I say prospects is because Izturis brings down Barretts value quite a bit in my eye. But getting rid of Izturis is an imperative and the only way to do it is probably by packaging him with Barrett. I'm not too interested in Hudson, unless they eat a lot of that contract. I just think that if you're trading Barrett you need to get a big bat back. Use Barrett to get ARod (if he'll waive his NTC) or Vernon Wells. I'm sure you can convince another team in need of a shortstop to take Izturis for a prospect. I mean we gave up our biggest trading chip to get him, so he has to have some value in the strange baseball GM world. I'm really not sure why people keep referring to Wells as a "big bat". I'm not convinced.
  17. I'm really happy to see the running game get going, albeit against an injury-plagued defense. Grossman played solid after some poor throws and poor decisions early. Nice confidence booster to beat the #2 NFC team on the road (not to mention the cushion they got in the standings). Defense stepped up after being put in some bad situations early in the game. Really just an overall solid win. Bring on the Jets.
  18. I'm becomming intrigued with the whole Hudson for Jones + Dempster idea. My "wishlist" is pretty similar to what TT mentioned. Sign Schmidt Sign Drew Jones + Dempster for Hudson Sign Durham If those moves are made, I could live with Izturis at SS if I had to. Durham Murton Drew Lee Ramirez Barrett Jones Izturis Zambrano Schmidt Hill Hudson Prior/Miller/young SP I really would like to see Hendry shop some of the bullpen guys (Dempster, Eyre, Howry) to free up some cash if they really expect Wood to work out of the pen.
  19. Me either. Theriot will have to prove he can do that for a full season before I'll believe he is capable of it. Everyone was saying the same things about Ronny Cedeno too. I never put much stock in the first callup year of hitting for a player. Especially one who never really did as well in the lower league. That's understandable (even though Theriot shows more offensive promise then Cedeno ever did, IMO). However, if the Cubs expect to go after some of the high-priced talent potentially available this off-season (Soriano, Drew, Arod, Schmidt, Zito, etc.) then they may need to minimize spending at some positions. Right now, Murton is probably the only projected "league minimum" position player penciled into the lineup. They may need to have another somewhere in there in order have enough money to pick up a significant bat and a front-line starter. Theriot or Pie are probably the only two viable options to fill that role.
  20. Or.......keep Theriot at 2B and trade for Arod to play SS. Theriot 2B Murton LF Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Arod SS Barrett C Jacque RF Pie CF
  21. I'm really curious what the Phillies are going to be seeking for Burrell. It could be a nice acquisition depending on the price (in talent).
  22. Ideally, I like Tim's and Vance's suggestions to trade Izturis and put Theriot at SS. Two reasons: Theriot is a candidate to lead-off and it frees up cash to go after more FA acquisitions. There are several different directions they can go, but really, just get the most productive players you can and worry about things like batting order later.
  23. I wasn't panicked when he opted out, but I'm getting there now.
  24. I don't want to derail this thread too much, but I haven't seen any updates this off-season on his daughter and her condition. Anyone heard anything?
