  1. Literally the only time I fight/argue with my wife is in the middle of a Cubs/Bears/IU loss. One of my favorites which happens repeatedly: Mrs. soapy: :walks into room and looks at TV: "The Cubs are losing." soapy: "What? Are you sure? Really? Wow. That is so insightful. I'm so glad that you're here to offer that remarkable insight. Thank you forwalking into the room and taking one glance at the screen and informing me that the Cubs are losing the game that I have been sitting here intensely watching for the last 2 hours. You are sooooo helpful." Surprisingly, things tend to go down hill after that.
  2. i think it would take Soriano requesting to move out of the lead-off spot. which, obviously, isn't happening.
  3. Two things: 1) I agree that they had some decent swings on Webb (and the bullpen) and had a few tough breaks as balls went right at guys. 2) I expected a bunt in that situation and was surprised not to see it. I'm not a big fan of sacs, but that was one of the few situations I thought screemed for one. Would have liked to see Theriot on 3rd with one out and Soriano coming up. Having said that, Lou was also about six inches away from looking like a genius (if that ball gets over Drew's head).
  4. i don't have a problem with pulling Zambrano there. i probably would have gone one more inning with him, but i don't think it was a bad move. he had things set up how he wants them with the bullpen ready to work the 7th, 8th and 9th. Marmol (the best reliever) just didn't get it done this time. even if you let Zambrano go the 7th, you probably use Marmol in the 8th and he still may have had trouble.
  5. being able to use either Fontenot or DeRosa at SS would be great. it would be nice to be able to play some matchup if necessary.
  6. i wasn't a fan of the signing (primarily because I tended to think his 2006 was a fluke), but he's been solid no doubt. i've become a big fan.
  7. very pleased with the roster, and the news that Soto will start tonight. I might have taken Monroe over Fontenot, but i don't feel too strongly either way. i think having Marquis on the roster is the right move. a starter could go down; Lou could change his mind about game 4; they could end up in a marathon game; whatever. he'll only be used in an emergency, so i think it's a good call; especially if Marshall is in fact stretching out for a potential NLCS. no complaints about the roster at all, and I'm pleased to see Lou go with a couple of "younger" guys at a key time (especially Soto). also, I'm personally happy for Hart and Cedeno.
  8. I noticed this in Kurkjian's preview of the series and thought it was interesting: This is something that many (including me) have been harping about for years now. The last few years this problem seemed to stem from a combination of Hendry and Dusty's philosophies. Hendry has always seemed to place little importance on making sure the pitchers he acquires throw strikes, and Baker's comtept for the importance of a walk (on either side) is well known. I'm curious how much of this improvement is really a result of Lou's influence. I don't doubt that some of it is. I just thought that it was an interesting change from last year and I am happy to see that it seems to be improving.
  9. i hate to even say someting like this, but i almost hope that there is something (minor) wrong with Marshall. that would be the only plausable explination for not using him yesterday. Even then, Hart probably would have been a better choice.
  10. game thread pimp back with a vengence. outstanding. go padres.
  11. i'm certainly biased about Kerry, but i am leaning more and more toward bringing him back. he seems to be getting stronger. weather he actually is, or if he's just toughing it out for one last hoorah is up to the Cubs to determine. he's been fantastic lately.
  12. all sentimentality aside, i'm starting to wonder if Wood might be a good call in this situation if Marmol has already been used. he seems to be getting stronger and stronger and Dempster has been pretty brutal in the second half.
  13. I don't get that impression at all, especially from BB. Bob has no trouble calling out stuff on the field he sees as poorly done or just plain dumb. i get the impression (perhaps incorrect), that BB doesn't mind calling out certain players (primarily younger guys), but hesitates to call out others. i have heard him question Lou's decisions a few times this season, but not this week. that was primarily what I was talking about.
  14. let me preface this by saying i'm a big fan of Len and Bob...... ...but one of the things i really got sick of during that series was listening to them try to explain away everything and play the "all is well" stuff up as much as they did. it was ugly. the pitching, the hitting, some of the baserunning. it just plain sucked. acting like it doesn't matter because the Brewers might blow it too doesn't make it okay, IMO. sometimes you just have to say, they are playing terrible and need to make some corrections. i hate to hear excuses about how the cubs didn't get to warm up on the field, or these lower rung teams are tough because they "having nothing to lose", or that it's okay because it's happening to the Mets too. len was acting shocked and surprised that he was getting emails or comments from fans that were getting panicky. it's the cubs. we expect them to blow it. at the first sign of trouble we're going to get antsy. they know this by now. unfortunately they are in a position where they interact with the players regularly and, I assume, are hesitant to really call out bad play sometimes because of it. i don't envy that particular part of their job. nobody wants to be the next Steve Stone. i guess it's just the nature of the beast. anyway, pointless rant over.
  15. i'm not as worried about what we lost, player-wise. i'm more concerned that Trachsel has actually been given a handful of starts when it was completely unnecessary and, in fact, detrimental to the teams success. trading for him was pointless, and using him in situations like yesterday (and expecting success) is just down right insane.
  16. If the Cubs don't make the playoffs by winning 1 out of 3 from the Marlins and 2 out of 3 from the Reds, it is not going to be based upon Kendall playing over Soto. You are likely right, but that doesn't make a stupid decision okay. Lou's job is to give them the best chance to win. IMO, that means Soto over Kendall.
  17. Cabrera hits 4 homers...in the first inning. Trachsel bombs and Lou will somehow act shocked. I can't wait. Go Padres.
  18. I'll go ahead and add starting Trachsel tonight as well. Hill, please.
  19. Agreed. Start Hill Thursday, Zambrano Friday. Regardless of what happens tonight, this is what I'd like to see. I have to believe this is what Lou is considering.
  20. even if he was the starter. if he's been strong the last few innings, maybe you let him finish it out.
  21. winning would be nice. please do that, cubs. kthanksbye
  22. I would say momentum exists, but I wouldn't say it really makes a player or team play better. As someone else said, it's more mental or emotional than physical. I don't think you can expect a team or individual to perform better simply based on momentum.
  23. no thanks. it's been real, Cornelius.
  24. aside from saying the obvious (Arod): is milton bradley a free agent? i'd be intriqued by him. also, abreu.
