  1. what happened? why is there an injury delay? please dont post "oh great" without elaborating... Sorry. Barrett dove back to second on a pick off attempt and the trainer came out and checked on him. Hopefully just a bruise. Barrett stays in the game. Sorry. We must've been typing at the same time! Thanks for the info!
  2. They won again? They beat the Cardinals, again??? Unbelievable!! :D Now, if they could beat the BAD teams, well...
  3. If we do trade him, I hope it's not to the Mets! [-( Can't stand them, and don't want to help them. On the other hand, if he's degressed a bit, he might hurt the Mets more than help them. Trade him to the Padres, Jim. Don't help out the Dodgers, Giants, or Mets! Or Yankees!
  4. Isn't that how we ended up with Jones, waiting until it was too late? If Abreu's available now, he won't be in October. Any team currently in the race that can afford him will keep him for next year. Next year isn't the issue - it's the option for the for the following year that has all teams balking. If you're trading for Abreu, you are commiting to 2.5 years at ~$35 million. And if you sign Lee or Soriano you could be talking about much more. The one thing the Cubs have is some money to spend. Not a lot of talent to trade, but they have money to spend. If you can get a guy by basically agreeing to pay his salary, and if his contract is not long in duration (Andy and Jim always prefer shorter deals to longer ones) then you've got to look into it. He's only overpaid by a couple million, which is no more than how much Rusch or Neifi are overpaid. I'd much rather overpay for a guy who has a chance to contribute something great (Abreu's likely .400+ OBP is just that) than for guys who suck. That 2.5 yrs. would be right up Hendry's alley. As Goony said, Hendry prefers shorter contracts.
  5. Is Abreu even a better hitter than Barrett anymore? He's older, his OPS is way lower, and he's got 8 HR. and he plays a position where it's easier to find an impact bat. Personally, I don't see the benefit of pursuing a declining Abreu at the expense of one of our best players. Abreu has an OBP of .434, with 90 walks! Barrett's OBP is .391 (which is still great), but only 27 walks. Better patience than Barrett, or most anyone else on the team. Of course, Barrett and Abreu together on the Cubs would be preferable. I understand he's got a great OBP. And while I'm a huge OBP fan, I'm pf the opinion you want a decent SLG from your corner OF. I happen to think Abreu's lack of pop is the sign of a downward trend. Don't get me wrong; I'd take him. Just not at the expense of a player who's posting a better OPS than him from a non-offensive position. You're right. His SLG and OPS are down from last year. What is a good SLG and OPS? I'm newer at the stats game, but I understand the importance of OBP! But the other two are important as well.

  7. That's true. I'm looking at it from the standpoint of a fan of a particular team. Sorry, just had to let out a little steam.
  8. Just saw this in Cbssportsline.com: According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners and Rangers are eyeing a possible trade with the Cubs to acquire infielder Todd Walker Of course, who knows how old it is. If the deal is done between the M's and Cleveland, what could we get from the Rangers? Jerry Hairston Jr. D'oh! Of course!
  9. In cbssportsline, it says that Detroit is trying to get Bobby Abreu from Philadelphia, and Houston is trying to get Miggy Tejada from the Orioles. Mr. GM doesn't seem to be in the hunt for either of them, but it also says that Houston is shopping Willy Tavarez, and the Cubs and Marlins are interested in him! Either Abreu or Tejada will make an impact for the next couple years or so, and we certainly don't want Houston to get Miggy!! Hendry's running out of time, and who knows if he'll do anything?

  11. Very well said!
  12. DLee, Barret and Jones all hustle like crazy out there, and I barely want to watch this team. Raisin hit the nail on the head. Actually, I agree whole-heartedly with Tim. The manager/management lets him get away with not hustling. As has already been said, Bobby Cox wouldn't let ARam get away with his lack of hustle. He'd call him out for it.
  13. I believe the problem is a mutual one; the Cubs shouldn't alllow him to do it or put up with it, but Aramis should have enough self-pride to hustle when he needs to. Bingo!
  14. Is it possible Hendry may want to fire Dusty, but can't because his hands are tied fiscally by MacPhail, and the Tribsters?
  15. Wait a sec. now? The job was his to win in ST and both Guzman and Marshall out pitched him. So lets not here the Cubs don't give Rich Hill many chances. It's not how many chances you are given. It's how you take advantage of those chances when you are given them.. So that's why I haven't won the lottery. Hill hasn't been given a chance. The worst thing is, I believe he still won't be given a chance. He'll get 3 maybe 4 starts and that's if he is good in his first one. Then when Marshall comes back he'll be moved to the bullpen or sent back to AAA. Remember Marshall's not a veteran, either. The difference is Marshall has outperformed Hill.
  16. ...and lots of bad luck. I hate the word "curse" cause I think its a copout, but I can't ignore the string of bad luck with injuries. Doesn't it seem odd that everyone is always hurt? Maybe more like inept management and poor training/medical management.
  17. Bring on any one of those guys (including Giles). At least one of the Giles brothers would be on the Cubs. :D I would like Betemit, Aybar, Pena, etc,...
  18. The Cubs have a lot the Dodgers could use at the moment. They've reportedly expressed interest in Maddux. They have the middle relief help that LA could use. Dempster may interest them as a closer. And with Kent out Todd Walker might even interest them. All I can say is...I HATE THE METS! :x
  19. Don't most companies have some kind of requirement of rehab when this type of thing happens? Why is it that everyone seems to always jump to unnecessary conclusions about people getting fired? I'm pretty pissed at this organization right now, but if Speier is being granted time to get the help that he needs, I'm happy with it. I think I heard on the score that Speier was going into rehab. I think it was on Scoreboard Update.
  20. Don't we have three 1Bmen in Iowa/West Tenn? I know they've been struggling, but isn't wiser to shut down DLee. We also have several Catchers between AA and AAA. Like you said, bring them up! Bring in the kids! I also think--and I think Mike Kiley wrote this--be both sellers AND buyers. Go out and get young guys to play the rest of this year, and get one young vet to build this team around. But, mainly, it's time to bring up the kids.
  21. Yes! Instead of going for the impact player, Hendry will pay less for the cheap OF, when he could've had Abreu, with power, OBP who takes a walk now and then!
  22. Tavarez has 18 WALKS! Could that be even lower than Pierre's? AND A .311 OBP!!! Hendry's moving backwards! He has EXACTLY the same number of walks as Pierre. Which means Willy Tavarez will be a Cub soon!
  23. I don't get the motivation for the dump, although I have been sort of predicting something like this for about 2 years. The ridiculous thing would be if the Cubs don't get involved. Abreu is exactly what they need, and while they will have money to improve, they won't have the players to spend it on. The reason the Cubs should go after him is the reason the wouldn't: Abreu leads the majors with 87 walks, and his OBP is among the top 20! We need high OBP from hits, not from walks, for crying out loud! Note the sarcasm! :D
  24. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA now that's a funny thought - Hendry deciding to lay down the law... I thought the same thing as soon as I read about Hendry taking control of the team!
