  1. Now Wood's the Cubs historian? Theo may want to hear an accurate account of how Hendry had his little pets of non-performers.
  2. Sullivan burying news again... this time about Wood Yeah, Wood also said in that interview that he won't play for anybody but the Cubs. It's Cubs or retirement. Face the facts. It's Ricketts that's in love with Wood, not Theo. Retire.
  3. That's the worst that can happen. Didn't you hear that Theo wants to change the culture and build a winning team? Don't you remember that Theo says he wants productive players and who have their teammates' back? How does Z fit into any of those? Has he suddenly see the light and will shape up? You want to bring back an overpaid malcontent who attacked his teammates, quit on the team and is non-productive? No thanks. This is the showcase tour. Z has little value right now and if shows something now, maybe a team will be interested. I'm sure we may have to eat some $$$, but Theo knows that Z can't be brought back.
  4. With no state income tax in Florida, the Marlins can offer a similar contract and put more $$$ in any FA pocket. They could sign Pujols and move Sanchez to 3rd or spin him for Geo Gonzalez. I believe someone will offer Pujols a monster contract and he'll have to decide if he just wants the money on a so-so team or take less for a competitive team.
  5. I just don't see the Cubs(under Theo) putting that much into one player. $4M gets you a middle inning reliever or a good bench player. And with the current roster, we could use both. It's Pujols at 31(not 27) and according to Theo's philosophy, at the back end of his peak production. And there have been FA that put up their best numbers after they signed with another team. The Cardinals won't pay him $30M for 8 years.
  6. Ouch..no way for $30M. You're paying for past performance. You know that Pujols has had arm and leg problems the last 2 years. Not saying he's starting to break down, but he knew that 2011 was his walk year and reoccuring injuries would kill the market for him. Pujols will sign after Fielder sets the market and don't see that happening until December.
  7. Ryan is right, Cuddyer can't play third any more. But if we fail in the Pujols/Fielder sweepstakes, then he would make a good 1st alternative. In fact, I'd also kick the tires on Jason Kubel for RF who is also a FA. The Twins stress fundamentals in their organization and might be attractive to Team Theo. Another possibility(trade) would be CF Denard Spann. The Twins have Ben Revere in waiting and we could offer a package of Wells or Shark and Colvin.
  8. TSN used to be the only pub(back in the caveman era some would say)that had box scores for all the games. That was pretty cool. Technology has simply blown up the landscape of baseball coverage. I miss SPORT magazine, which used to be up there with SI. I believe there's still a market for in-depth and investigative stories for baseball, but don't know where they would land.
  9. I wonder how involved Theo is in the Red Sox managerial search. If he truly is involved, this bodes well for the Cubs. My dream revenge scenario is that Theo gets here and names the BEST guy fast, trumping the Red Sox. Larry Lucchino is really coming off as a jerk in this. Oh wait, he already was a jerk.
  10. Nope. Yes. The 2013 Cubs will be a whole lot different. Of course. But not from being "blown up." BOOM! Dempster, Ortiz, Grabow, Lopez. Maine, Wells, Wood, Zambrano, Hill, Baker, Barney, DeWitt, LaHair, Pena, Ramirez, Byrd, Montanez, Soriano, Johnson, Campana, Colvin.
  11. Nope. Yes. The 2013 Cubs will be a whole lot different.
  12. Just kinda unlikeable and arrogant and hard to swallow. I would have no problem with Theo hiring him to head up the stats department and lock him up in a dimly lit basement with an spreadsheet however. Tango or Dolphin either, for that matter. Steve Jobs was arrogant and hard-headed. So was Lou Piniella. So's benchwarmer. Let's hire him!! This team needs to be blown up and that's what Theo will do. It will take 2-3 years to get it on the right track.
  13. Just kinda unlikeable and arrogant and hard to swallow. I would have no problem with Theo hiring him to head up the stats department and lock him up in a dimly lit basement with an spreadsheet however. Tango or Dolphin either, for that matter. Haven't we had enough of the cuddly, non productive people in this franchise? Steve Jobs was arrogant and hard-headed. If he does the job..I'll take him.
  14. A bit more: The prospect of Francona coming also as manager and Buckley thinks Theo will look elsewhere. Theo and Francona disagreed alot, in public and out of sight. Bad time to be out of work manager, Buckley thinks Francona will sit out until mid next year, do tv and then listen to opportunities. Compensation? "Something real" was the phrase used. I wonder what that might be. Why not offer them Z?
  15. Steve Buckley of the Herald was just on with Krapman on CSN. Quick summary: Buckley's sources: One says announcement in 24 hrs., the other says "24-48 hrs." Theo is good at finding "players in the weeds" and can rebuild the Cubs. Some big $$$ contracts-Carl Crawford, Lackey are Theo's decisions. Theo did not get along with Lucchino. Many in front office won't miss Theo.
  16. I would look into the lack of news. This whole thing heated up 10 days ago and we haven't even gotten a legit confirmation that the Red Sox are going to let the Cubs interview the man. Now we don't know what's truly going on behind the scenes, but despite the idea that the Cubs are being really stealth, in this day and age, its crazy to think that a week could go by without any further news coming out. It's just a long process. Schedules need to be co-ordinated with front office staff and the Ricketss family. No one knows if both teams agreed upon a window of opportunity and if no agreement, then move on. Theo is also trying to hire a manager for the Red Sox, where his allegiances lie, at the same time. It's a selling process where the Cubs need to spell out Theo's potential authority, how they see decisions being made, development of a team philosophy, current roster, minor leagues, etc.. That's at least 1-2 days. If I'm Theo, I want to meet all of the front office personnel apart from the Ricketts and listen to their story. That's 1-2 days. While this is going on, there's Mrs. Theo checking out the area, the potential schools, etc.. So at the end of all this 4-5 days, decisions are made and offers extended.
  17. I wouldn't read too much any lack of news. This process will take a number of days to complete at best. The Cubs have to sell the position to Theo and Theo has to sell himself(if he wants it).
  18. I also listened to the WEEI interview. Apparently a number of Red Sox players were not in shape this year. Luchino has talked with nutrition people recently, whether this could have contributed to the 2nd straight late season collapse. Some pitchers drank beer in the clubhouse during games. Landscape is changing from paying older, veteran players to younger ones. Luchino choked a bit at the question of who was insisting on signing Carl Crawford. He claims every decision was a 'group concensus'. CYA. Luchino was the lead player to fixing up Fenway, sticking advertising signs everywhere, closing off a side street(like Ricketts wanted to do) on game days and having a street festival atmosphere. He feels like Theo gets all the credit for the ballclub and he gets nothing for the business side and new revenue streams.
  19. Today is the day it all started. In an effort to promote his nearby Billy Goat Tavern, William Sianis buys tickets to Game 4 of the Fall Classic for himself and Murphy, his pet goat. The bar owner becomes so upset when the Wrigley Field ushers asks his guest to leave, the Greek immigrant places a curse on the team preventing the Cubs from ever winning a World Series again. Didn't see any goats today at Wrigleyville Sports. Someone go by Murphy's just in case.
  20. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS The 'Friends of Tom' faction will be showing up soon. What dimension are you currently residing in? The Fifth..with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.

  22. He extended one person so he didn't leave the organization. Presumably so that the new GM doesn't have to work on the biggest offseason we've had in years AND hire an entire new staff around him immediately if he doesn't want to. There's also plenty of indication that firing or demoting Fleita would not be a problem if that's what the new GM wants. What are you talking about? Forgetting about Tim Wilken? Answer my question, please.
  23. Ricketts needs to stop the media from reporting their opinions? Opinions are great. Just stop hiring these people and let the new guy do it. Rick Hahn, etc... maybe great, but that's up to the new GM whether he wants him or not.
  24. What in the world are you talking about Filling every job in the front office, before the new GM is hired. That's doing Theo or whoever no favors. Would you take a job of this importance without having the authority to hire your own staff?
  25. Ricketts needs to stop this right now. I know it's your family's new shiney toy and you want to play with it. Keep your hands off it. Hire the best GM and let him bring on his own hires. I've read that part of problem in Boston is a meddling ownership which wanted to make personnel decisions. We already have the makings of that here.
