  1. Agree with a lot of this and thanks for laying it out. We aren’t getting both but think we get one and likely say f it and then scale back next year or the year after off the upper limits (like you laid out it shouldn’t be overly hard with the guys who fall off). If we somehow miss both I’d guess we’d still spend money but we’d probably be more measured and probably don’t get to or over the top end. IMO.
  2. How nervous are we they won’t? Those media rights aren’t selling themselves with a third snoozefest season in a row spent banking on potential. Oh they’re almost most definitely going over this year and likely next. It’s just a matter how far over.
  3. I want to keep him mostly but like if him and a not great prospect (or Vic) as a sweetener was what it took to have some team take all (or like 95%) of Chatwood’s deal I’d be down. I doubt Monty nets us something all that great and probably is more valuable to us than whatever his return is.
  4. I’ve wanted to suggest this but keep pretending to care about this baloney salary cap that can go horsefeathers a goat Former MVP playing niche role suits a super team What are the incentives for the Cubs to not blow past the cap this year? Avoid whatever the first time penalty is? Are those penalties serious? I think there’s waaaaaay more to gain spending the money while the talent is out there. The penalties for going over for 1 year aren’t all that crazy, iirc. It’s the repeating and going over the upper limits that can kill you but like you laid out a bit above it seems like there’s a way we could navigate under (or at least the upper limits) by 2020-21. Hopefully we are willing to say horsefeathers it for at least 2 years.
  5. Depending on who exactly gets traded and how much we are going over the LT, McCutchen could be an interesting 4/5th OF option assuming we get Bryce. He hit lefties well this year, .819 OPS 126 wRC+, and he’s hit them well in his career .950 OPS 158 wRC+. He’d be a nice LF/RF option vs LHP, plus by all accounts he’s a great person and clubhouse dude.
  6. that was my first thought as well, but then who are you getting to do the same thing for less? Zobrist/Bote/Happ/FA guy like Mercer or Galvis. The role is mostly filled internally with whoever is on the bench on a given day and the roster spot is taken from the FA MIF addition that can play SS (Mercer or Galvis for example probably only costs $2-3 million more than the $1.2 and fills an actual need/role).
  7. Non-tendering Tommy and saving $1.2 seems like a no brainer.
  8. I like the idea of having two weirdos on the team who don’t drink or seemingly enjoy anything in life other than their weird religion, doing Red Bull promos and working on being good baseball players
  9. Bold use of Lance horsefeathering Lynn, Boone
  10. Anybody able to find Happ’s splits vs LHP in the minors? I know we have ~200 PAs in MLB to say he isn’t very good, but did he hit them well down there? If not I’d almost prefer he decides to move to a full time LHB soonish and focus on that.
  11. I agree. I really don’t want to move him either and hope we ultimately don’t.
  12. I agree, but this year they proved that Schwarber or Happ were the only primary options, and if they don't add someone to fix that this offseason, we're probably getting that again. Which is gross. Even in the scenario where we keep the entire offensive roster (which it doesn’t seem likely) and only add Bryce and a backup MIF who can play SS and shift Javy to 2B vs LHP(let’s say Mercer, who’s good against lefties) we have LF covered with 3 non Happ/Schwarber options internally with Bryant/Zobrist/Bote. I would assume a Cameron Maybin, Austin Jackson, etc RHB type will be added once a Schwarber, Happ, etc is traded off.
  13. One phenominal season as a 22 yr. old and 6 other seasons with a line of .269/24 HRs/70 RBI/ 2.9 WAR makes for a solid everyday OF, but not a generational talent in my book. As I said before, he's young enough to add to his legacy, but right now his season as a 22 yr. old looks like an outlier. A lot of potential, a ton of hype, and a whole lotta money. you forgetting about his 2017 where he went .319/.413/.595? he has a career .900 OPS, and that's with a bunch of plate appearances as a teenager weighing it down How many RBIs did he have that year though?
  14. Jorge De La Rosa was our closer at the end of the year. We're starting from scratch. They can't afford to add 3-4 go-to bullpen guys. And they're not starting from scratch since some of those guys are coming back. Yeah they’re not turning over the bullpen like crazy. At most I’d expect 2 additions then the rest are internal options. Morrow/Carl/Strop/Cishek/at least 1 and probably both of Monty and Smyly are all guaranteed spots. Then you have a FA (Chavez?) and potential trade addition then it will be rounded out by a Rule 5 guy, Randy, Norwood, Maples, Webster, Mills, etc.
  15. By this time next year I think we are going to be having some fun arguments about how to order the top 3 of Amaya, Hoerner and Roederer. Hopefully Adbert is graduated.
  16. Desmond was never good at SS and hasn’t played meaningful innings there in 3 years and he’s been a negative WAR player 2 straight years. Bote is a better backup SS option than him.
  17. Brewers just a charmed team. Dropped third strike and that inning is over then Ottavino throws a 95 dick shot on an 0-2 count
  18. 109 MPH lineout and a ball to the wall for an out, story of the Brewers year
  19. I believe the hiring of Chili was more about approach and philosophy, not changing mechanics. They said Malle was the mechanics guy for the young guys and they got out of him what they wanted and they were ready to move on to the philosophical/approach side with Chili. If I remember the spin on it last offseason.
  20. Tapia looks like left handed Almora a little without the defense. What’s there to like?
  21. Nice of Bryce to give his friend a ride after the shoulder surgery. Bryce seems like a guy who drives one of those annoyingly big pickups. He can fit Kris’s death bed in the back for him.
  22. Matt Holiday And Carlos Gonzalez are staring in their OF, do they really have too many OF’ers?? They have Brendan Rodgers coming up within the next 1.5 years for the IF (him or Story will shift to 2B). But he could be an option there for a year too. That definitely would've been the case before this year, they had Gonzalez, Dahl, Blackmon, Parra, and Tapia. But now, Blackmon and Cargo are free agents, Parra's bat fell off, and Tapia increasingly looks like a AAAA player. If there's one thing that the Rockies can probably manufacture without paying through the nose it's corner OF production, but Happ would definitely have a spot there. They extended Blackmon early in the year. He got a 9 figure deal. But I think they definitely need some OF help in the offseason, for reasons/guys you mentioned above.
