  1. Yeah, my heart's just oozing with sympathy for the guy. Especially considering Hendry was the only GM crazy enough to offer him a 3/$12MM deal at a time when everyone thought it was ridiculous. DeRosa should love Jim Hendry. everyone on this board thought it was ridiculous. i didn't see any reports suggesting that other teams saw the contract and thought "oh man what the hell are the cubs doing?" In fact, I remember that the buzz at the time was that the Phillies were strongly considering making DeRosa their starting third baseman after 2006 and were reportedly offering him 2 years for 8 or 9 million. When DeRosa took the 3 year deal with the Cubs instead, the Phillies went out and immediately went to their backup plan of Wes Helms. Their new GM might have been the one in that organization who was pushing for DeRosa at the time, and so it isn't much of a surprise that they would show great interest in him again. Yeah I do remember the Phillies wanting him to be their 3B in 06 and I think the Padres were actually looking at him to play 2B/3B for them too that offseason.
  2. And the Phillies like this deal? He actually said 1 of Carrasco or Happ with Jason Donald, that seems like quite a bit for DeRosa alone, it is Steve Phillips so I don't how much I would put into it
  3. His agent isn't really needed for anything since we know he will waive his no trade already... And we already know that it will be after Thrusday, so... I wouldn't say that. There are some complications that would need to be talked about if an agent's player is traded. I doubt its as simple as saying " He said he's good with being traded to the cubs so just do it if you can, if you need me give me a call." So yeah, i would either take it as the deal is done or the trade has been tabled for later. Also he checked out, not left for lunch. Still, fax machines take care of that stuff in a second. I'm sure all of the trades that come pouring in at the last second of the trading deadline don't require physically meeting with their agents, since some of those deals come to fruition in like 5 minutes. True i see your point in that. There is an article on Mlbtraderumors.com saying that Peavy might be attracted more to the yankees now that they have CC. According to the article Axelrod said peavy might be interested in the yankees if they got CC. I wonder how long it will take before a NY post or new york writer posts an article saying that Peavy is considering the yankees or that the yankees are making a push for peavy. Its annoying but NY fans act like their teams are the only ones in the planet. Probably not that long until something along those lines is reported, and that is just posturing by his agent to help Towers to get more/maybe make the Cubs guarantee his option in the 5th year and give him a full NTC.
  4. A DeRosa + Hart/Cedeno for Bonser/Humber(Both out of options) + a prospect wouldn't be a bad trade for either team IMO and Bonser/Humber are probably better pitchers to get to the Padres than Happ, IMO. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081210&content_id=3711009&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp&partnerId=rss_mlb
  5. Well, Gammons seems to be wrong about 100% of the time too. Yeah, but Gammons is basically just a roving reporter. He hears stuff like we hear stuff, then he reports on it. He's not "in the know" with any team, excluding maybe Boston. Pretty much, Gammons just rehashes stuff that has already been reported, unless it has to deal with the Red Sox/former Red Sox (Manny), he usually has pretty good info about them but the rest of his info when it doesn't involve the Red Sox is as likely to be right as any of the other stuff that's out there.
  6. Latest update on ESPN 1000 said that a three team trade for the Cubs to get Peavy are getting "Sweaty" with the Padres/Cubs/Phillies. I don't know if I have ever heard "sweaty" used in that context but it has to be good right?
  7. I think the fact that there have been so few reports so far today, either way, on Peavy could be an indication that Hendry/Towers are working on getting this finished and aren't able to leak stuff out to the press because they are busy finishing a deal, just a guess.
  8. And to think the economy was supposed to bring the price of FA down...
  9. Did it sound like a separate trade or that this RF would come as part of the Peavy deal I didn't hear it but from what the posters were saying it sounds like they have another deal set up to trade for a OF and it is not part of the Peavy deal.
  10. WHat board? Cubs.com board LOL. Suddenly I don't believe we're trading for a RF anymore. They said he said that when he interrupted on ESPN 1000 right after mentioning the Peavy trade was close he said that the Cubs were also close to a trade for a RF/had the possibility to do so.
  11. On another board they said Levine also said the Cubs were close to trading for a RF along with Peavy. I wonder who that could be Teahen? Hermida ? Dejesus?
  12. I posted this in the CC thread but I thought I would do it here too, according to SI.com Lowe is close to signing a 4 year $66+ mil. deal with the Yankees and it could be done by tomorrow. The Phillies were rumored to want Lowe and if they miss out on him, maybe they will panic and offer to pay more of Marquis' contract or give up more/better quality players in return. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/12/10/sabathia.yanks/index.html?eref=T1
  13. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/12/10/sabathia.yanks/index.html?eref=T1 Looks like Lowe could also be a Yankee within the next day, the Phillies wanted to sign Lowe and maybe missing out on him will maybe force them to pay a little more of Marquis' contract or send out an extra player/better quality.
  14. Now that CC and K-Rod have signed, maybe Hendry/Towers/3rd/4th team get things moving here as the rest of the FA are likely to start signing now as those two were supposed to be the table setters, and Towers/Hendry/other GM's are going to need to take care of other stuff and not want the Peavy thing to stop them from being able to sign certain guys.
  15. I actually saw someone speculating about this on another MB, but with the report that even if a deal is finalized it won't be announced until after the Rule 5, maybe a deal is dependent on the Cubs/Padres/3rd/4th team drafting a certain guy and including him in a trade. Anybody know the draft order of the Rule 5? It's possible the Padres want more than one guy in the rule 5 (it was reported) and they feel one of the teams is in position to be able to draft a player they might not be able to get and want them to draft and trade that player, ala Josh Hamilton. Pure speculation here but there could be something to it and I would imagine the Padres/Orioles both will have higher draft position than the Phillies/Cubs so it could be interesting to see if any of the teams draft someone.
  16. If the Phillies are considering/already have offered Jamie Moyer $10 mil a year I don't see why they wouldn't jump at an offer to get Marquis for $5-7 mil. If Marquis is really the hold up and Hendry has an offer on the table to get Peavy without giving up Marquis he should do it, someone at some point in the offseason is probably going to take on Marquis for a discounted price.
  17. Pretty much and I think the lack of information made the media jump to their own conclusions. Now that it was reported that the GM's were in mandatory meetings this morning it's unlikely that Hendry/Towers had real significant talks today and things should likely heat up tonight/tomorrow, IMO.
  18. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/getting_closer_to_a_deal_for_p.html Not much that we didn't already know(move Marquis/Derosa/find 3rd team), but at least they are still talking and Towers seems to think they are closer to a deal, interesting that they would wait until thursday to announce a trade. This is just nerve racking :banghead:
  19. Anybody wanna bet that Rosenthal and/or Stark post an article sometime today yet saying a deal is close/Hendry doesn't need new ownership's approval? Those two have been all over the place in their reports.
  20. Stark says the Cubs and Mets are now the frontrunners for Ibanez. I don't really get the Mets interest in him, they are so lefthanded already it seems like they should be going after a righthanded bat, Delgado, Chavez, Murphy, Anderson, Schneider, and Church are all lefties that regularly play for them. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=3757030&type=blogEntry
  21. We all didn't want Aurelia, but after looking at his splits, why not? Over a .900 OPS against lefties last year. It makes more sense than I originally thought... Last 3 years vs. lefties: .305/.354/.545 for an .899 OPS Seems like it could be pretty damn productive. Aurillia would be a solid choice also Mark Grudzielanek could be a good choice his line against lefties last year was .395/.459/.523 .982 OPS in 86 AB's
  22. Dear God no. We would need some sort of insurance chances are Cedeno will be involved in a deal as well so Fontenot alone could be a big problem, and it's probably wishful thinking that we could get Furcal (Theriot/Fontenot platoon) or Hudson on top of a Lefthanded RF. It would probably more realistic and smart for us to sign 1 of Aurilia, Durham or Loretta to platoon/be insurance to Fontenot.
  23. irrelevant i think people are making this out as more than it is. never did he say a deal was close. just because he found a package that satisfies him doesn't mean hendry can do it yet, or even that he accepts the supposed deal. i fully expect this to drag on for a while still Well it said he has a deal that satisfies him and also satisfies the 3rd and/or 4th team involved. So we know there is a deal in front of Hendry that only needs his ok to happen. In theory it could be unreasonable, but with as long as they have been at it, I think Towers has a pretty good idea who Hendry is willing to trade for Peavy. Yeah I doubt Towers threw something out there that he knows Hendry wouldn't accept/be able to negotiate off of. Part of the wait on Hendry's part (not like it's been that long) could be he is obviously reviewing the offer and making sure he can still make other moves and he still could be running it by the higher ups in the FO/Tribune Company/Zell/Potential new owners and it might take a while to get the ok from everyone.
