  1. Great news hopefully we can get a deal done by next week, it's nice to hear that Bradley wants to come here as well. With Lou, Z and Bradley in one clubhouse this summer things could get interesting...
  2. Yeah I don't think there is that big of a difference either both have been healthy/injured for roughly the same amount of time, and none of their injuries have been too serious just pulls/strains etc. IMO Healthy Sheets>Healthy Burnett. It should be interesting now to see how the market shapes up for both Lowe and Sheets as they are the only #1/2 type pitchers left in FA and after that there is a pretty big drop off.
  3. Not that they were ever serious contenders or even a possible fit, but this should likely take them out of the Peavy speculation for good. That's nearly $240 mil. for two pitchers and they still will likely add some sort of offensive player, along with the possibility of Sheets or Pettitte. It's one last team to use as leverage if Towers/Hendry do revisit talks. The Braves were all but out as soon as they traded for Vazquez because they gave up Lillibridge, essentially making Escobar/KJ untouchable, along with Flowers who the Padres wanted, and we already knew they wouldn't include Hanson and weren't willing to give a NTC out.
  4. The article is by Muskat that's all you really need to know... A OF was in the plans the whole offseason and I am sure they have it in the budget to get one without moving salary. Unless we are signing someone to a 4-5 year deal for $50+ million, which we won't as no FA OF will get that, we aren't going to need to move salary.
  5. If he returns is he going to try and start or will he go back to being a closer?
  6. I don't know why but Burrell seems like the type of the guy the Giants are going to sign, and probably to a larger deal than everyone thinks he is going to get.
  7. So if Ibanez went 3@30, what does that mean for Bradley? 3@24-25 or 2@19-21?
  8. I hear Bob Howry is a Free Agent... Not anymore he's not. Just ask the Giants. Oh yeah I forgot about that, well then how about we sign Bobby Hill Mark Bellhorn Jason Dubois David Kelton He Sop Choi Les Walrond and try and get a Pirates FO guy in the Padres FO and propose a trade for Peavy revolving around those players.
  9. I am not taking direct quotes here but I believe what they said was that he prefers the NL and wasn't going to give any AL teams, but if a AL team had a deal Towers liked they would listen to it. But he really wants to stay in the NL.
  10. The Angels are quietly working behind the scenes on this front. I think they are too but until the Tex thing is resolved they really can't get into too serious of negotiations because Tex is a much more important player to their team next year than Peavy is. They already have a good rotation and might be getting Escobar back, and even though he was bad last year Adenhart is still young/had good minor numbers.
  11. I think that's debatable, and Towers would probably have to go a long way convincing him that no other NL teams were a possibility, as it has been his desire to stay in the NL. The fact that the Angels are so close to SD might make it more of a possibility that he accepts a trade there, but I still think he prefers a Cubs/NL team over any AL team, even if they are only a hour or two away from SD.
  12. Apparently the Angels will only go after Peavy if they can't resign Tex, so we gotta hope that they can resign him. If they can resign him that pretty much leaves Towers dead in the water. Also if the Tex thing drags out for a week or so it can allow Hendry to get back in to things while the Angels wait on Tex and can't exhaust their full resources with Peavy. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/angels/la-sp-angels12-2008dec12,0,322033.story?track=rss
  13. Alfonso Soriano Rich Harden Re signing Zambrano Lou Piniella Fukudome (before we knew hot crappy he'd be this year) Harden Re-signing/trading for Ramirez Whether you think he produces enough or not the Lee trade was great and we resigned him for a reasonable amount coming off a career year Lilly signing 4@40 was considered a large deal for a pitcher at the time I would expect the Cubs to sign Soto long term when the time comes, assuming he continues to be a steady offensive player/stays healthy. Well the Ramirez deal was highway robbery. We didn't know he'd turn out like he did... but I agree with re-signing. Yeah but at the time Hill was still considered to be an everyday 2B, and I posted that just to show that Hendry has pulled off a lot of moves/committed a lot of money to being competitive. I agree with you that it's crazy that people think the ownership/GM isn't committed to winning. Hendry has brought in top flight players through FA/trades the last few seasons and we have had good, competitive teams. Like you said the players haven't shown up when it has mattered.

  15. So what big name player are we going to be linked to next offseason with a deal being near complete?
  16. LOL, Towers is getting backed into a wall Yeah, unless Peavy accepts a trade to the Angels (which might be likely) or Towers wants to trade him to a division rival in the Dodgers, the Cubs are the only team he can really trade him to. I don't know if a deal will get done but I find it hard to believe we have seen the last of Peavy to the Cubs reports.
  17. I thought we'd at least be able to get through the weekend without a report about there still being a deal.
  18. Wow this is a shallow way to look at things. Peavy has only had one GM and thats Towers. We dont know what kind of relationship he has with Towers. The way you are describing the situation its like saying if Wood wanted to go to the Yankees when he was a FA, do you honestly think Wood would've told Hendry screw this trade me to the yankees. Unlike some people, Peavy probably feels he owes it to the Padres to help them out a little. Just because Peavy doesn't speak up and say screw this trade me, doesn't me he wants to be a Cub. Its not a question about Loyalty, its a question about professionalism and respect. While all that is true, Peavy could also use the respect angle against the Padres as well. They signed him to this deal how long ago, and now are trying to trade him. Peavy could feel like he owes them nothing since they are the ones who openly put him on the market, he didnt demand anything. Or he could be pissed at the organization for doing nothing to build a competitive ball club since he resigned. They were one of, if not the worst teams in baseball last year and are doing nothing to improves themselves in the immediate future and I doubt Peavy wants to be a part of it. A player of his caliber, reaching the prime/peak years of his career, probably doesn't want to be on a losing team for the next 5 years (which could likely be his best years).
  19. I think the majority of us believe the deal isn't dead. How alive it is though...that is where you will get a difference of opinion. My chances of a deal by day: Monday: 60% Tuesday: 75% Wednesday: 50% Thursday (post talk is dead comments): 20% So you're saying there's a chance?
  20. Thats exactly what Peter Gammons said, and the exact reason why Gammons says Peavy will be a Cub by spring training. Not trying to be a d-bag here, I think this Peavy stuff is a lot more legit and likely possible to happen still, but wasn't Brian Roberts supposed to be a Cub by ST?
  21. I would think that now that the meetings are over a lot of the OF's will start signing by middle/end of next week before the start of Christmas. Also with the trade for Joyce do you think the Rays may back off a little from Bradley?
  22. Peavy has Towers by the sac, not Towers by Hendry's sac. If we wait 2 months and give up less, while in the process signing/trading for a quality LF is that really a bad thing. No it's not a bad thing and I think a good amount of this is still negotiating tactics. Both GM's will go home and take care of other things, it has been long reported that the cubs want a OF before Peavy, and maybe in a week or so Towers will still realize that there is pretty much no way to be able to afford Peavy and trade talks will resume being that the Cubs are really the only team that something can get done with and the demands will likely lower. I still think there is a decent chance of something happening. It's December freakin 11th we have around 2 months before pitchers and catchers even report a lot of things can and probably will happen.
  23. I could be wrong and I didn't follow it nearly as close as the Peavy talks, but last year when the Twins were working on trading Santana didn't they pull out, maybe a few times, and say they were just keeping him? Only to go on and trade him. I know that the situations are obviously a little different but I think something similar happened with Johan last year.
  24. Alright the Rule 5 is over, Hendry go lock yourself in a room with Towers and whatever other GM's are needed and don't come out until a deal is finished!!!
