  1. Rule V just started, Padres picked SS from the Rockies. Pirates took Veal FWIW
  2. The Twins sound pretty interested in Dero I wonder what we get could from them? http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/35941629.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUqCP:iUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiU
  3. It might've just been speculation, but I thought I heard that they'd be able to keep him til the deadline since they moved Greene, though they still have to trade him at some point this year. Peavy has a full no trade clause. Moving him at the deadline would likely be much more difficult than moving him now. Peavy doesn't have to approve a trade to anyone. Towers would be doing himself a favor and taking what he can get for him now, rather than risking that he can't move him at all at the deadline. I know, there was some report yesterday saying that Towers could wait until the deadline to trade Peavy to "develop a better market for him." Well guess what Towers that NTC isn't going anywhere and Peavy is still going to dictate where he goes. Teams that want to trade for him at the deadline aren't going to be as likely to give up major league talent for him as they will need those players to likely stay competitive, but if a deal is done now a team can still replace those players. It gets a little harder in the middle of the season to replace guys. Also this isn't like the CC situation where Peavy can be traded for half a season and then be a FA and sign anywhere, Peavy is going to have to play with that team for the next 4-5 years so he is going to have to like where he is going and not just the fact he could be on a competing team for half a season.
  4. How can anyone justify the economy is effecting baseball contracts when Kyle Freakin Farnsworth will be making a annual salary of nearly $5 mil. the next two seasons?
  5. And is there a way to follow it? 11 CT http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081211&content_id=3712768&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp You may be able to watch live, but you may need an MLB.TV subscription. Thanks seems like there could be a few interesting guys in there, I wouldn't mind us taking a flier on either of these two guys for some bullpen help. Perdomo looks like he has some good stuff. Luis Perdomo, RHP, Cardinals: The Carolina League All-Star was traded from the Indians to the Cardinals for Anthony Reyes in July. He had gone 3-1 with a 0.92 ERA and 18 saves for Class A Kinston before getting promoted to Double-A Akron and then being dealt to the Cardinals. Overall, he saved 20 games and had a 2.36 ERA over 72 1/3 innings. He struck out 82 and held hitters to a .190 batting average against. Chris Mason, RHP, Rays: Mason struggled in Triple-A and the AFL in 2008, so those who decide to take a shot with the 2005 second-rounder will be doing so based on his 2007 season, when he went 15-4 with a 2.57 ERA and was named MLB.com's Double-A Starting Pitcher of the Year.
  6. And is there a way to follow it? I would think it would be on the live MLB.TV coverage of the meetings, you know the time?
  7. Edwin Jackson to Detroit for Matt Joyce, I wonder if this could take TB out of the Bradley talks as Joyce is a lefty OF. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/rays_jackson_rumored_headed_to.html
  8. http://csnchicago.com/pages/new_landing/?Garfiens-Winter-Meetings-Blog-Peavy-Deal=1&blockID=20047&feedID=661 Since when has there been a "hard deadline" that quote by Towers saying he wanted a good feeling by thursday/end of the meetings has been blown so out of proportion by the media.
  9. Who wants to bet we get a report sometime tonight/tomorrow saying a deal is imminent or on the verge of being done?
  10. Is it me or is there really nothing in those new repots that we didn't already know? - A 3rd/4th team might need to get involved - The Cubs might be able to complete a trade by themselves - DeRosa could be involved going to a 3rd/4th team - The earliest a deal will be completed will be after the Rule V - Towers needs to have a "good feel" about the trade after Thursday to continue negotiating - Marquis may or may not need to be traded to clear up payroll - Cubs new ownership could be an issues in bringing on a big contract - The Cubs #1 priority is a lefthanded OF bat and Peavy is secondary - The Phillies/Twins/Orioles are possible teams to be involved in a deal - Lou still wants a Lefthanded bat - Towers is "intrigued" by a number of players To me it's nothing more than reporters rehashing a bunch of already known information into new stories by using a couple more recent quotes by Towers/Insiders/Cubs FO, nothing real groundbreaking here. But then again that's just my opinion and I could be completely wrong.
  11. I think the reason we haven't seen a Towers quote in a while is because him and Hendry are actually working on a deal, a lot of his quotes in the media were done early in meetings before they sat down and it was all posturing/negotiating through the media to try and drive up prices. Now that they have been there a few days and are sitting down he likely has less time to talk to the media and needs to get down to business with Hendry and get a deal hammered out. I think the fact neither Hendry/Towers, Towers more than Hendry, have spoken to the media today speaks volumes to the whole situation that both are trying to get a deal done and are too occupied and they don't have the time and energy to be negotiating/posturing through the media. A bunch of Towers quotes were just posted Yeah really bad timing there, but the fact that we are just getting the first quotes out of him right now at least means there will be some sort of resolution soon. Up until today he was being quoted almost all day saying things today we haven't heard from him until almost 9 CT, so something likely happened/is going to happen. Some of this could still be posturing before a final deal goes down to maybe get that certain player or a better player added to a final deal.

  13. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3761236 Absolutely nothing new is in there and it almost seems like whoever wrote it is trying to create something because he hasn't gotten word from either side today on where the talks are at. The fact that ESPN is saying that a deal is unlikely to happen gives me all the more confidence I need to believe that a deal is going to happen. Just because of the fact that Derosa is being made semi-available probably strengthens the Cubs chances to get Peavy because they can weigh multiple offers from teams and take the strongest one to help them land Peavy, it might take a little longer now, and ESPN can go on the FAKE DEADLINE Towers never really set and all, but by getting more teams involved for Derosa only increases our chances of getting Peavy IMO.
  14. Could this mean Coste is headed to the Padres?
  15. It would be nice to know we have Bradley to pay a visit to Thom/Marty Brennaman after they go on one of their rants about the Cubs...
  16. http://stations.espn.go.com/stations/espnradio1000/blog?id=3738908 Yayyyyyyyyyy Please be Bradley. Great news, I really want Bradley and I think his attitude is something that this team needs not to mention a .999 OPS Sarcasm? What team on Earth would need an attitude like Bradley's? No sarcasm, the Cubs need a badass guy with a lot of intensity, sure Bradley has done a lot of things that are questionable and not the type of character you want. But all reports are that he behaved himself this season and was a really good leader in the Texas clubhouse and that his "bad attitude" that was portrayed upon him this last season was not warranted and was more a testament for his hardworking attitude and transforming himself into a leader and hardworker.
  17. I think the silence out of Towers the last day or so means something. Yeah it means Hendry told him to shut the hell up so they can get a deal done. I think between the silence out of Towers today and the fact that there really haven't been any new reports, just rehashing of old ones, some sort of resolution is going to happen pretty soon.
  18. Yeah I know expecting a .999 OPS is crazy and mid-high .800 OPS is more likely.

  20. Got a link to that? or can you summarize?
  21. I know I am doing the exact same thing :banghead: , it's only around 4 in Vegas so it's possible some new stuff starts rolling in soon as GM's start gong to dinner/out and I would think we have an idea where we stand on Peavy sometime tonight/late tomorrow morning IMO.
