    Rademacher is a HR shy of a cycle. Almora 2/3 with a double and a run scored. Jeimer added a walk. Geiger with a HR. Alcantara in the completion game wound up going 3-for-4. Pretty good day offensively so far.

    I keep coming back to Garza to Boston. They have 4 strong pitching prospects not including Webster. It always hurts less to deal from a position of depth. The Red Sox could trade one of Owens, Ranaudo, De La Rosa or Barnes and feel a lot better about it than a team who only has one pitcher of that quality. Ortiz is 37 and signed thru 2014. Vogelbach seems like a good fit here, though it's a bit early to be trading him. He might bring back more after having a good year at a higher level, but he's been pounding the ball of late in Kane County. Garza, Gregg and Vogelbach for one of Owens/Ranaudo/Barnes, Rubby De La Rosa and Blake Swihart.

    Oh, good. Brent Lillibridge. I bet Dale can't wait. I think Murphy got HBP and that's why he was pulled. If IFA is coming back and they get an arm that has a decent shot at being a reliever, preferably somebody with a good FB, that's win.

    Agreed, but the Marlins saved over 11 million in the deal. Cubs got their value in players.

    Turns out we and the prospect rankings were maybe overestimating Vizcaino's ability to stay healthy. Maybe. This was expected to be largely a rehab year for him. It's not like it was a major injury. A clean out of calcium deposits isn't one of those concerning setbacks. It's still too soon to label him the next Angel Guzman, but it's fair to say that the chances of him having trouble staying healthy in the future went up with this setback.

    That's what you can expect to get when the pitcher's not that good and you're asking the other team to take on all his remaining salary. Those guys are basically just live bodies.

    Insanely conservatively. Agreed. Torres and Jimenez were widely judged superior prospects compared to Frandy De La Rosa and Luis Acosta, but those guys haven't looked worthy of having been drafted in the first ten rounds so far. De La Rosa did nothing in EXST and nothing so far in the DSL. Acosta has looked terrible. These guys may have athleticism and tools, but they're all pretty much wait and see guys. After a year or two, when they actually get to high school senior age, there will be a much clearer sense of what they can be.

    Vogelbach is on a tear. I believe both Theo and McLeod predicted he would have a great 2nd half. In his last 10 games heading into this one, he's hitting .421/.500/.579 with 7 walks and just 1 strikeout. Add in his dinger today and it just gets better. Including today's partial game, he's got 10 RBI in his last 9 games and 7 in his last 3.

    I know it's just the DSL, but players with the right profile are worth noticing down there. One of the players that fits the profile is Jose Paulino. A lefty with a projectable frame (6'2", 165 lbs.) who had good peripherals as a 17-year-old last season and is breaking out so far this year. As a lot of players are apt to do, he had a shaky (and by shaky I mean terrible) first outing. But since then he pitched 19.1 innings, giving up 14 hits, walking 5 while striking out 27 for an ERA of 1.86. Last year he struck out a batter per inning while giving just less than a hit per with a 3:1 K/BB ratio. Today he went 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R (earned), 0 BB, 6 K. His two previous appearances were even better.

    Most definitely that's what happened. They got over-committed and are now looking at the options. The blowing through the limits story is either a smoke screen to gain leverage in trade talks to land more cap space or a legit story about what options they are considering after having misjudged the market. Theo & Co. are smart and have a plan, but they are far from infallible. All these after-the-fact, trying to explain the Cubs moves posts suggesting some sort of Machiavellian maneuvers that are well above the heads of other GMs around the league are way off.

    Jokisch putting together another nice outing. Thru 5, 4 H, 1 R (earned), 2 BB. 8 K. He is coming off of a June performance where he pitched 32 IP, 22H, 10 BB, 28 K and a 1.97 ERA. Don't look now, but here comes Ben Wells. He went 7 scoreless today giving up just 2 hits while walking 1 & striking out 3. This after a June in he pitched 20.2 IP, 16 H, 5, BB, 19 K and a 2.61 ERA. I wonder if he's picked up any velo? Anyone know?

    Vogelbach heating up as predicted by many in Cubs management. He's batting over .400 in his last ten games with 7 BB and 1 K. 3 double and a HR in that span.

    I was thinking the Mets or Twins might have an interest. They were rumored (or speculated) to have interest prior to the Cubs claiming him from the Rangers. I wasn't thinking a big block. Hard for me to judge the cap space value. Plus the limited action the Cubs have given Borbon. But if there's no value there, there's no value there. There's totally value there. It just depends on the right team. If the Cubs could get Erick Leal and Jesus Castillo (basically two decent IFA prospects) for Campana, they certainly can get a $350,000 IFA slot for Borbon. It all depends on if there's a fit out there. That said, it would be a lot easier to find a fit with a team who is wanting a prospect of some sort. Tangled, keep in mind that IFA slots cost the team trading them away absolutely nothing if they don't plan on using them. If ownership doesn't intend on spending that money and there's a team wanting to acquire it, then getting something for nothing makes a lot of sense. According to BR, Borbon is better than replacement, so he's got value even if it is very little.

    I wonder if the players are confused. Ha! That'd be great if they all walked out onto the field tentatively, not knowing what to do. Kinda like the guys in Field of Dreams entering from the corn for the first time...
