  1. It is fun to watch and refreshing to see. Tommy Nance, Ben Leeper, Cayne Ueckert and Scott Kobos bust on the scene. Ethan Roberts, Brendan Little and Eury Ramos take a step forward. Manny Rodriguez and Jeremiah Estrada return from injury and pitch really well. And guys like Hunter Bigge, Danis Correa, Eduarniel Nunez and Joe Nahas show potential. That's 13 names, only a few of which were previously just mildly on the radar. And that doesn't count the starting prospects that are always way more likely to break in as relievers. That's some depth.
  2. Yeah, essentially the Cubs traded Tyson Miller for Dakota Chalmers. Miller might have a higher floor, but Chalmers definitely has a higher ceiling and is a year younger. He did allow 3 walks in 4 innings last night, but has limited free passes to just 4 in 9.2 innings since joining the Cubs. Historically, he's been a lot worse than that, so there may be some regression to the norm in his future, but if not, the Cubs may have something. Chalmers has been very difficult to hit throughout his minor league career. He hasn't allowed a BAA higher than .175 since 2016. If he can keep his BAA low and walks less than 4 per 9, he has a shot at being more than just a reliever...
  3. Haven't done the research for this, but it *feels* like he's had one bad inning disease. I wonder if that means he has trouble from the stretch, or if it means he has trouble making adjustments mid inning. I know there's been at least one start like that (feels like more). I'll do some digging and see exactly how often that's happened. It's also happened a bit for other prospects like Sanders and one very memorable one for Herz, so we might be conflating those performances in with Jensen's. I'll check.
  4. Continuing with his up and down season, he's been pretty bad over his last 4 starts, Ryan Jensen is up again. He's perfect thru 6 on 77 pitches. He's likely done for the day, but this is a 7-inning game so we'll see...
  5. Preciado goes hitless, but draws a walk and scores. Felix Stevens hits his 1st HR of the season and 7th as a pro. He's definitely got some pop. He turns 22 at the end of this month. All 3 IFA pitchers threw strikes today. 7 Ks, 1 BB. Yovanny Cabrera started. 6'2", 180. He's 20 and won't turn 21 until next March. Based on his stats, I'd be interested to see what kind of stuff he has. In the DSL as an 18-year-old, he was really tough to hit (.156 BAA) but walked a lot of guys (32 in 41.2 IP) while also striking more than a batter an inning (48 in 41.2 IP). That statistical profile usually means good "stuff". The fact that he's, thus far, remained tough to hit in the ACL (.167 BAA), but has, thus far, only walked 1 batter while striking out 7 in 5 innings is a good, early sign. Definitely want to learn more about Cabrera. Ezequiel Pagan should be back up in Myrtle Beach if he keeps hitting like this. He's got a HR and a triple in 2 ACL games.
  6. Best day of the year on the farm by far.
  7. AZ Phil said at least 4 of the pitchers on the 60-day had gotten TJS. We know 3 of them are Jack Patterson, Yovanny Cruz and Ben Hecht. The other pitchers that are currently on the 60-day IL that could've had TJS are Michael McAvene, Riley Thompson (though I thought I heard he didn't get it), Sam Thoresen, Jerrick Suiter, James Bourque, CD Pelham, Joe Wieland and Ben Holmes.
  8. It's a risky proposition considering his injury history, but he's looked really good so far... He's got at least two good pitches, probably 3. FBs sitting 94, curve (or whatever it is) has good shape and was effective. Don't remember seeing a change-up tonight, but he's supposed to have a really good one a few years ago. Danis Correa's FB is a plus pitch, but he doesn't have much else. That guy is definitely a reliever only. But Estrada's arsenal can definitely play as a starter. Now his arm/body has to hold up... I know he's missed a lot of time with injuries but I view it as just one injury: He missed the end of 2017 and all of 2018 with a sprained UCL which the Cubs tried going the rest route rather than surgery. Then, he pitched a little in 2019 before getting Tommy John surgery on the elbow. He definitely needs the innings even if he doesn't end up a starting pitcher in the end. Here are all his strikeouts last night. I saw one change and one curve at the end: True, on the one extended injury description. He certainly looked good last night.
  9. It's a risky proposition considering his injury history, but he's looked really good so far... He's got at least two good pitches, probably 3. 10. Mixed bag tonight. Combined no-hitter for the Pelicans. Herz and Bain combine for 11 no-hit innings striking out 15. Brendon Little makes his '21 debut with a scoreless, 1-hit, 1 innings performance. Pertuz hit his first pro HR. But... Morel was removed from his game (don't know why yet), Davis has gone 0-4 with 4 Ks so far, Cam Sanders pitched well except for a horrid 3rd inning including 3 walks and a wild pitch. Bain, Herz and Sanders (the 3 best starting pitching prospects the Cubs currently have playing in games) combined for 12 walks in 16 innings. I don't know how to feel. :dontknow:
  11. Correa completes the no-hitter. Apparently the 1st no-hitter in 9 years for Myrtle Beach. They didn't make it easy on themselves. A walk, HBP and 2 balls in foul territory that weren't caught.
  12. Danis Correa hitting 97 on the gun.
  13. Yeah, and it wasn't a cheapy. Hit on a line but got all of it. Good to see.
  14. Bailey Reid completes the 8th. No-hitter still intact with 3 outs to go for the Pelicans.
  15. think he had a 2-inning outing previously. My recall, and his season stats show 5 IP in 4 games prior to today which confirms. It would be curious to see whether they'd stretch him out and start him at all? Or if he's strictly a relief guy? Ah, yes, you're right. His first appearance was 2 innings. His announced velocity on one FB was 94. He's still just 22. Stretching him out would be interesting considering his massive injury history. Regardless, the only way you get game experience and hopefully execute/improve is to pitch. So the more innings the better (so long as he stays healthy) whether he winds up starting games or not. Estrada walked one and struck out 2 more giving him 7 Ks, 1 BB in 2.2 innings to complete his outing.
  16. Meanwhile, in Myrtle Beach, DJ Herz also didn't allow a hit in his start going 5 innings, no hits, no runs, 4 BB, 7 Ks. Jeremiah Estrada relieved him throwing 2 perfect innings striking out 5 of the 6 batters he faced. It was Estrada's first multi-inning appearance since returning from presumed TJS. Estrada is out for the 8th to try to extend the no-hitter.
  17. Bain, who was mentioned with Cam Sanders as a breakout pitcher this year, may have turned a corner. After posting a 6.85 ERA and .801 OPS in his first 6 starts (22.1 innings, 23 K 16 BB), here is his line over his last 3 starts: 16.1 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 BB, 24 K, 2.20 ERA, 1.10 WHIP His is last game (prior to tonight), he was scoreless in his first 4 innings, but was touched up for 3 earned in the 5th. At 6'5", 240 lbs., Bain seems to have a body that's is typically considered durable enough to start. He's thrown over 90 pitches his last 4 consecutive starts. Bain will be 23 for the duration of this season.
  18. Max Bain with 6 no hit, no run innings. 3 walks, 8 strikeouts. Recent South Bend addition Hunter Bigge takes over in the 7th.
  19. Kohl Stewart taken out after 1 batter (walk). Wonder how serious the injury is.
  20. There's no room for him with the current 40-man roster crunch, but if he were on it, Ben Leeper might just be major league ready. I still need to see more of this excellence consistently (20 minor league innings ain't gonna cut it), but this is a meteoric rise. Another data point on how the Cubs pitching development/infrastructure has turned the corner.
  21. Yeah, just 26 and was once a top 10 organizational prospect with LAA. I'm cautiously optimistic. This isn't a knock on being cautiously optimistic at all. I just wonder what impact, if any, Wisdom's unexpected success (and to some extent Alcantara's as well) has had on us taking note of other older former prospects getting hot in AAA. I know me personally, I wouldn't be putting much stock in it. But your eyes do get opened to the possibility of it being meaningful because of what we've seen from guys with previous pedigree now doing well in the bigs.
  22. I watched the plays before he was removed. There was a pickoff play at 1B. He dove back in and the ball got away. It looked the ball hit him in the back on the pickoff. He showed no ill effects, popping up right away and ran to 2B. It didn't look like a particularly hard throw either. Then Pinango hit a weak liner to the secondbaseman. He flipped to the SS who tagged Howard as he was diving back to 2B for a double play to end the inning. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. Howard was talking to the first base coach while walking back to the dugout. He didn't seem in pain. He could've been saying he shouldn't have gotten doubled off. He could've been describing that he tweaked his shoulder diving back in. In either case, he wasn't in obvious pain. His removal from the game could've been previously scheduled. That would seem a bit odd though understandable. It also could've been done out of extreme caution. Tough to say. Regardless, if he did tweak something, it didn't appear serious.
  23. Of course. I mean, he shouldn't be ignored. He's likely not going to make any top 30 lists unless he keeps improving his slash, but he doesn't turn 23 until November, and he's hitting well in an age appropriate level. I doubt he has starter ceiling unless there's a Contreras-like breakout in the works, but that's highly unlikely. A bench bat who can fill in at 2B, 3B, LF and 1B is still possible.
  24. Sorry, I mean Preciado. If both Made and Preciado are in Mesa, it seems unlikely to me that Hernandez would be there as well. And thanks for the DSL info.
  25. I figure there’ll be a few more navigating to Arizona. Hopefully Cristian is one of them. Thank God. That makes more sense. I know AZ Phil mentioned the Cubs would only be fielding one ACL team, but I couldn't for the life of me understand why that would mean Quintero would play in the DSL especially after already having been stateside for several months. However, with just one Mesa team, I expect Hernandez will play in the DSL. Howard's injury didn't seem very severe. He's already missed 3 weeks. When he comes back, Made (who hasn't been lighting up Low-A) will likely return to Mesa. With Made and Pinango both in Mesa, it might be a little crowded if Hernandez was there as well. Has AZ Phil said anything about the number of DSL teams the Cubs will roster?
