  1. With all the options the Cubs have a 2B, trading a guy who will be 25 and has no chance of making the big league squad for a strikeout capable reliever who could make the team makes sense.
  2. The question isn't who's going to need a 1B, the question is who is going to want the best hitter in baseball? The list of interested teams will be long. The money may be considered too much by some, but logic suggests (and some reprots, too) that even teams like the Royals would be willing to pony up the money. He's worth a lot.
  3. Mozeliak said that the way he understood it, they need a term sheet signed by the deadline. The rest of the contract language and all that stuff could be finished later. This is hardly an extension. According to Pujols, he didn't want this go on beyond when he reported to camp. Originally, that was scheduled to be the 19th. Then it was reported that he would arrive early on the 16th and that that was the deadline even though he wasn't required to report until the 19th. Then he made it when pitchers and catchers reported on the 15th and it got moved back to noon on the 16th. Noon. This is hardly an extension.
  4. And 4 days until Albert Pujols reports to camp.
  5. I'm right there with you. I live just outside of LA in a desert climate much like that of Mesa. A few days ago, I went outside and something about the air smelled exactly like the air when I go to spring training. I took a deep breath and couldn't wait for ST to start.
  6. Apparently, the Cubs are not one of the 8 teams to which Young agreed to be traded.
  7. Here's the latest on the Pujols negotiations. Apparently he's asking for more than the Cardinals are willing to offer. A lot more. Link Two weeks to go before Pujols reports to camp and his deadline passes...
  8. He looks good. Only problem is he's a Trevian. ETHS all the way, baby.
  9. I doubt it, but I wonder if Pettite making it official reawakens the Yankees desire to add a starting pitcher. Might another Zambrano to the Yankees article be floated by one of the NY papers?
  10. According to ESPN, Pujols will veto any trade that the Cardinals may put forth if they can't sign him by the February 19th deadline, thus ensuring that if he's not signed by the time he reports for spring training, he will be a free agent. That is, of course, if Pujols and his agent stick to their word. 21 days to go...
  11. Koch didn't really have a true breakdown point. He was terribly inconsistent his entire career. His numbers were terrible in 2003, but then he rebounded and was much better (though still not good) in 2004. His K/9 also went up dramatically from 2003 to 2004. He was done after his age 30 season, though. Gagne only logged 15 innings his age 29 and 30 years, but then was good in 2007 before falling apart in 2008. Gagne's breakdown was steriod-related, wasn't it?
  12. That's definitely wise, especially when you're the Oakland A's, but what if you're the Red Sox or the Cubs and you have the money. Is it good to let the talent walk and get the picks and rebuild the back end of your bullpen over and over again? Truly asking...
  13. He's the best pure athlete in the system. He can hit for average and because of his ability to consistently get the barrel of the bat on the ball, he should be able to hit for decent power. He has plus speed, will steal bases, should have good OBP, and is a solid defender who will stick in CF. In a brief 25 game stint he hit .347/.414/.465 last season. It will be interesting to see what he can do at the higher levels.
  14. BA's top five for the Cubs should now read: 1. Brett Jackson 2. Trey McNutt 3. Josh Vitters 4. Chris Carpenter 5. Matt Szczur
  15. Considering that they ranked him 7th in the organization before the Garza trade and Archer and Lee were both ahead of him, I assume they have Szczur ranked 5th. I highly doubt any of the players that came back in the Gorzelanny trade would be ahead of him. It is also unlikely that any of them would make the Cubs top ten.
  16. I don't know if he has improved on hitting breaking balls since being drafted, but his K/AB ratio has improved every year while his walks have remained basically the same, maybe with minimal improvement. The K/AB ratio still isn't good, but if he keeps improving it like he has been, it soon will be. But, you're right, if he indeed does struggle and continues to struggle with breaking pitches, then he'll have a hard time continuing the trend of improved Ks per ABs.
  17. Jim Callis thinks that Szczur could easily have been a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft had he been eligible. Nice.
  18. Here are some links to articles confirming Szczur's signing. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=3060 http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110118&content_id=16458346&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb
  19. If it's true, then YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Some people on this board, myself included, were looking to see if the Ricketts family meant it when they said they wanted to invest in the minor league system. With this move, they've put some money where their mouths are. Thank you Ricketts and Hendry, whose call it is to allocate the funds.
  20. More people saying that Burgess is included in the deal. http://natsinsider.blogspot.com/
  21. That could change on February 19th, if the Cardinals haven't extended Pujols by then.
  22. Unless Cashner's arm falls off in spring training Russell had better not be given that spot in the rotation. Even if Cashner's arm does fall off, Diamond/Silva/Gorz/JJax should probably be considered before Russell anyway. Coleman, too.
  23. =D> Yes, yes they could have. Of course, that might've hurt Koyie's feelings a bit, but into every life a little rain must fall. The dude nearly sliced his hand in half and came back to make to the bigs, I think he can handle a little disappointment. As a coach or a manager?
