  1. That was a great read, CR. Thanks for posting that. This was my favorite part from his coach at USD...
  2. I was hoping, too, but I had them pegged for the AZL. They're all pretty young. Maybe if they show well in Mesa...
  3. Javy found my acknowledgment of the mere possibility of my reconversion to be that inspiring. Cool, I'm sold. Now just doom boner Castro into a great 2nd half. Kyle has got to be one of the best developmental tools ever. On what page of "The Cubs Way" are you listed, Kyle?
  4. the fact that we're excited about kyle hendricks starting really shows how boring our minor league pitching is right now Truer words were never spoken. Boise gets started in a week. They'll at least have some interesting guys. Underwood for one. Would've had more if not for injuries to Conway and McNeil. When they get some of these college arms signed Boise becomes even more interesting. AZ will have two guys worth following in Daury Torrez and Erick Leal.
  5. Personally, I want prep catcher Chris Okey. High school RHP Connor Jones would be awesome but I don't see him signing. Another highly touted prep catcher is Jonathan Denney. OFer Ryan Boldt is still on the board. TCU power righty Andrew MItchell is available, but he needs to work on control and the Cubs FO generally steer clear of guys like that. RHP out of Ole MIss, Bobby Wahl is ranked 36th by BA. Intriguing HS LHP Garrett Williams (66th best by BA) is there. Other names: HS RHP Kyle Serrano HS OF Cord Sandberg HS 3B Trey Michalczewski HS C Tyler O'Neill HS C Dom Nunez HS LHP Jake Brentz Ole Miss C Stuart Turner Texas Tech RHP Trey Masek North Carolina LHP Kent Emanuel
  6. They may be there but only because of signability questions. Perhaps the Zystryznky guy was chosen so that they would have money to make a run at them. They'll have all day tomorrow to negotiate with them...
  7. Any chance that Consonant Guy's pick allows the Cubs to spend on someone like Connor Jones, Hunter Green or Kyle Serrano if they fall to them in the 3rd? There goes Green...
  8. Any chance that Consonant Guy's pick allows the Cubs to spend on someone like Connor Jones, Hunter Green or Kyle Serrano if they fall to them in the 3rd?
  9. Does that mean his nickname will be "Hoss"? He sure as hell isn't "Little Joe"...
  10. Anybody know how much, if anything, the Cubs have left in the 2012 IFA pool money? It's use it by June 15th or lose it...
  11. Don't worry. Most of them won't be played due to some combination of inclement weather, flash-flooding, brush fire, locusts or a pre-game pie-eating contest mass casualty event.
  12. Interested to see how Lake does against AAA pitching. That makes it an even split between 3B and CF in his 6 rehab games. I know, it does seem like Balaguert has been floundering around short-season, EXST and Low-A ball for a while. Interestingly, he's still just 20 years old and will be all year.
  13. This FO doesn't have to deal with Larry Lucchino telling them what to do.
  14. He'll probably start out at 3B as long as Vitters is on the DL. What will be interesting is what they do when Vitters comes back. They'll basically have to admit who they see as the better long-term option at 3B. I still think they prefer Lake. Well, Lake played all but one rehab game in CF when he could have played any position they wanted him to. I think they envision him as an OF at this point.
  15. Now this is just getting silly. Not really - this is the norm when there isn't a Strasburg/Harper no doubter. And a lot of this probably has to do with Houston playing potential picks against each other to get the best possible under slot contract. Float a story here. Create a rumor there. And then go back to their agents to see who is willing to come down a bit.
  16. Man, that would be a great haul. Love McMahon in the 3rd. Driver in the 5th and signed would be like Christmas in June. Gawd, I hope you're right!!
  17. Assuming they reach their prospective ceilings and that those ceilings are Bryant = Mike Schmidt and Appel = a never injured Mark Prior...which would you rather have? Feel free to change their ceiling comps as you like...
  18. Too much talent to just look at stats, especially when there seems to be plenty that thought he'd experience this. Not to mention, his last 10, he's gone .372/.426/.581 with 3 walks and 5 K's in 43 at bats. SSS? Sure. But its also entirely possible we'll see a line closer to this than his previous one for the rest of his year. Enlarge the sample to 63 at bats (since May 9th) and he's still hitting .333/.373/.524 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 3 BB and 9 Ks. It's impossible to know whether it's a hot streak or a trend. We'll just have to wait and see. But at the very least it's improvement. If the Cubs got a 3:1 ratio out of Javy the rest of the season, I think they'd be happy with that from a 20-year-old slugger in High-A.
  19. Here's hoping Dillon Maples can bounce back.
  20. I disagree with his choice of words here. If Houston takes Appel, it may be the worst case scenario for the Cubs (it may not be as we are hearing the front office is fairly evenly split between the two with some guys liking Bryant as well), but it certainly isn't a "tough spot" to be left with the options of Gray or Bryant. Maybe a tough choice, but I would say the Cubs are in a good spot picking second in this draft no matter what happens.
  21. What kind of information are you referring to? Health? If he's for real at the major league level? The latter is pretty much answered for me... Health and effectiveness. He's a starting pitcher. They get hurt or wear out their arms to ineffectiveness at a fairly high rate. I see no reason to lock ourselves into his age 31-3? seasons two and a half years before they even begin. My tolerance for taking on Samardzija's age seasons 31-33 now is a lot greater than my tolerance to letting him go in two years which is a lot greater than my tolerance for giving him 5-7 years of even greater money at age 31. I'm with ya, TT. It makes too much sense for the Cubs to try to extend him. And frankly, it makes a lot of sense for Samardzija to do it, too. Castro, Rizzo and their agents aren't dumb. There's a reason these deals get made. It's smart for both parties. Kyle's right in that the Cubs, with their current payroll, can afford to pay more for Shark once he gets to FA, but the Cubs current payroll situation won't be their future situation if all goes well. It still pays to be smart with your resources.

  23. Just as good or better of a chance he prices himself into someone giving him a 6-7 year deal on FA market at max prices as him regressing. We can afford to risk it and pay him that if it comes to it. So you would rather underpay a player during his prime and then overpay to keep him through his age 36 or 37 years, than pay him more for those last two arb years in his prime and have that contract end after his age 34 or 35 years? Are you concerned with him getting injured or regressing before he turns 31 and saving the Cubs being on the hook 3 more years? Financially, it makes a lot more sense value wise to extend him now. During his prime, he is a lot less likely to sustain a major injury or regress. I would rather bet on than not happening in the next two seasons than have to compete with the rest of the market to pay him thru age 36 or 37 when he is more apt to get injured and almost certain to regress. For Samardzija, he gets more money sooner and eliminates any possibility of not reaching that big payday. It makes sense for both sides assuming they can reach an agreement on numbers.
